Well, I'm sure a lot of people here are gonna see this title and think this is just another console war bullshit shitpost. It isn't. I'm a PC gamer. Been mostly a PC gamer my whole life. I prefer it for several reasons but that's not important. And I don't say this with glee but with disappointment:

PC gaming is not going to last.

Why? Several factors. First, the price. The price of PC parts is going to keep rising thanks to AI. Yeah, it's a bubble right now and it'll burst. But it'll quickly rise back up. It may be overvalued right now but anyone with a brain knows that technology is here to stay and it's going to be very hardware intensive which means the price of hardware will rise. Just look at how GPUs and RAM have gotten out of control. As the world gets more and more technological, demand will rise, prices will rise and building a PC for gaming will just become unaffordable for the average consumer.

But then there's also the compatibility issues. When you code a game for a console, you know what hardware you'll be working with. What OS it will be running. Not so for PC. Optimization needs to be top notch for PC and your shit needs to run on a wide variety of hardware and operating systems. This is getting less and less interesting for developers.

Then there's recent developments in console capabilities. Like Nintendo managing to allow players to use their controller like a mouse. More and more accessible online stores allowing indie devs a chance they didn't have on consoles before like they did on PC. Never mind that hardware has gotten so good that you can hardly tell a difference in image quality anymore.

This is why Gabe Newell is launching his Steam Machine. It's the only way PC gaming can survive: Modular, premade, affordable PCs that essentially function like glorified consoles. Watch when developers start coding games around the specs of the Steam Machine. Then you'll know. You'll know we're done with PC gaming beyond premade machines like that.

The steam machine won't sell enough to alter the market

Consoles use the same componets as PC. Console prices are going to go up as well.
Steam machine is just another faliure in the line of steam hardware. Steam does not know how to make good hardware. Everything they've done has failed. Even Deck isn't even a fraction of what switch or even the old handhelds like psp/vita or ds managed to sell.
PC is fine. PC runs the world.

Explain why consoles would not also be affected by the price of hardware increasing.

Console hardware doesn't need to be as powerful as PC hardware. As devs know what they're working with, they can tailor their games towards it. That keeps prices down. But yeah, expect consoles to also go up in price. Just not as much as PCs.

Do you think your games are programmed on consoles

Two points regarding the price: I get a new machine once a decade or so. My current once cost me 2500€ a few years back and I'll pay twice that if it comes to it despite being poor. RAM kits having tripled or quadrupled in price is irr-fucking-relevant. What else am I going to do but fork out the cash, go without a computer? Hah!

Secondly, yes, demand will rise. And what does the market do when demand rises? That's right, expand supply. Obviously building new fabs isn't cheap or quick so you're going to see a lag measured in years but the supply will catch up bringing prices back down.
>>
I agree with you however I think it will end gaming in general. Consoles will also be too expensive to be made. Even smartphones might disappear.

>>729142937
reddit spacing and what exactly do you think consoles are made from? What fab is going to waste time making shit JUST for consoles? Fucking retard.

pc gaming wont die, and anyone who thinks otherwise is dumb.
like yeah sure mabye modern pc gaming might die, but theres still 20+ years worth of excellent games to play. and the best part is anything pre 2010 doesnt even require a dedicated gpu nowdays
