>>729143584Every civ is extremely unique compared to 2's disabling of techs. Aging up requires you to build one of two landmarks. Melee infantry is actually viable. Your civ's unique unit doesn't come out of castle exclusively, instead it can be as soon as feudal (4 mins into the game) for example with English getting a free 2x speed archery range with their unique longbowmen from their landmark. AOE4 is full of bugs. Like the undercarriage of siege weapons just disappearing and they also changed the spear models on spear units so now they all have shitty halberds.

In AoE2, every civ can more or less pursue every possible strategy, with the differences being how effective each civ is at a particular strategy. That isn’t the case in AoE4. If you want an Age of Empires game to feel more unique, then you have to really dig into the guts of its design and change things at the foundation. What AoE4 does is take the universal strategies that define AoE2 and chop them up piecemeal before selectively divvying them out to be each civ’s gimmick. None of the uniqueness in AoE4 actually lets you do something you can’t already do in AoE2. All it does is narrow the viable strategies each faction has access to. This would be fine if the game had good casual content but it doesn’t.
