Imagine if there's a new FFIX animated film where they make Zidane an uber 2kool4skool edgelord, and all the other mascoty characters uber kawaii or unnaturally moefied aigoo uguee uwu (like what they did to new Harvest Moon after GBA's TOMT, or the Mana remakes).

Mulder is also playing a character, himself, the nonchalant, snarky, quippy "spooky" Mulder is his way of socializing, a character he "pretends" to be to cope. In reality, he's a broken man, as seen often in the early seasons (breaking down in the Church, in his room, from losing his sister) and the "real" Mulder is the almost unhinged and deranged, obssesive force, trying to hunt down leads especially when he's getting closer to the source or if a target is escaping. He is a danger to himself and everyone else when he goes in this mode, as Abed when he goes full Nicholas Cage or gets lost in his fantasy with the Darkest timeline as Mulder is in his Ayyliums fantasy. They both also have certain repetitive quirks or habits, like Mulder and his (heavily implied) gooner habit and the obvious chewing on sunflower thing (and the darting pencils on the ceiling). Abed with his meta 4th wall everything is a story or a movie in a movie habit of thinking / acting / reacting.
