The entire US Navy posture is about protecting their carriers cause they're so damn valuable. During WWII, the Japanese lost TOO many carriers to continue fighting. Weapons, and militaries, need to be effective. Japan lost the moment they thought they could convince the US to NOT seek revenge on them for Pearl Harbor. Their failure was the miscalculation on human psychology, not the obvious deficiencies of their industrial and military might against the US in the 1940s.
