I don't get it, aren't linear games just better than open world? All open world does is make you run through an empty field to get to pockets of gameplay, why not just put the gameplay in a sequence then?

>>729155317Open world is always a nice idea. "So much to do! I can go anywhere!"Before you realize that narrative and pacing is all over the place, and balance is a hit and miss and usually just level scaling etc. Usually content is super repetitive as well, it's like constant "clean up" of older games after you finish them or just before final level/boss. Markers on the map etc."Hub area" system is better as well as clearly split areas that encourages you to clear specific areas first or outright locks you out of some places unless you can clear(or cheese) some absurdly difficult stuff. Old Might&Magic games. But pure open world rarely has anything engaging about them. And reuses content nonstop.

Well designed linear games are, yes. Open world games are near unilaterally preferred by lowest common denominator cattle, but even that's better than being strung along by the nose to the point where you might as well be watching a movie. Tightly paced and thoughtfully considered gameplay sequences are the best overall, but there is an art to it. It's the difference between, say, the first Resident Evil game and The Order 1886.
>>729155317Linearity takes away from choice, which is integral to gamesYou can't have a true adventure without choice as not having choices just means you're along for the ride
>>729155317>I don't get it, aren't linear games just better than open world? That depends on what you are trying to accomplish with the game. The problem is that developers have decided to follow the Ubisoft definition of "open world", where it's just a bunch of copy-pasted assets all over the place, as opposed to the older definition of "open world" where there were a ton of designed things to find all over the place and it was up to you to wander around and see what you can encounter.
