>4:3 gets replaced by 16:9
>small screens get replaced by big ones
>good looking games stop being produced

4:3 masked what would otherwise have been shitty UI design choices and allowed people to get away with garbage because the closer the aspect ratio goes toward a square, the more aesthetically pleasing the entire thing is by default.
Similar phenomenon with text and fonts. Text could only be so small before being illegible on older, smaller displays, so they naturally had to take up a certain percentage of the screen height which conveniently happened to be extremely aesthetically correct and easy to read. As displays have become larger, and resolutions more detailed, people have gotten away from these basics which were quietly handed to them for free back when limitations were forcing their hands.

So they got away with garbage because it was better? How was it garbage then?
