The steam version is basicaly a premium graphic set (and the only one that works currently since toady changed the graphic part of DF code for 5x.xx) and a premium OST.
And there is also the benefit of workshop integration and participate in testing betas if you care about those. But basicaly it is the same game as the free one on Bay12.
If you want to play DF past 5x.xx and you feel like you can only do so with graphic set, then the premium is your only choice until people figure out how the new system for graphic sets works.

If you already like DF, or if you really want mouse controls, or if you thought the game was too complicated and need an in-game tutorial, or if you want graphics beyond what a tileset can provide, then yeah it's worth it. I bought this game upon its Steam debut in late 2022 and then married the man who showed me the ropes. Still playing (and still married!) I do not know if this would be a prescription for other singles, but it worked for us! We particularly enjoy the emergent storytelling and the emotional rollercoaster ride that is watching the rise and fall of our dwarven civilizations. I love this game! Big thanks to Bay 12 for their part in my happy matrimony.

Yes and no. No matter what the game will break if you breed 10000 cats and have a fort with 700 dwarfs. Nothing will ever "fix" that. But its certainly better than it was now. If you have a decent cpu you can probably have around 200 dwarfs and a reasonable amount of animals before you start noticing lag.

it has a tutorial now, but otherwise just look up "dwarf fortress beginners guide" or something on youtube. it's not nearly as complicated as it seems. I mean it is, but you don't need to understand absolutely everything to play the game well and have fun. I've been playing it on and off for years now and there are still some things I don't know because I'm just not very interested in them. it's very wide and very deep but don't get overwhelmed thinking you need to know everything. half the fun is the surprises

How bad is youre cpu? When i had an i5-96k i was able to get to around 150 before noticing anything. And desu ive never got close to experiencing truely bad lag even with that since they improved the code.
