What did you think games will look like in the future when you were a kid? for example graphical progress is not that impressive to me, when I was a kid I imagined in future we will have more complex games for example that it would be standard for even simple RPGs to have completely simulated economy like if you make a lot of swords and sell them it crashed the market or smth like that, or killing bandits or wolves around cities and farms would actually amount to something other than xp and loot, like living ecosystems where for example population of deers would explode and leather armor would get cheaper or something like that. I want more simulation less polygons. last actual advancement in games I remember that impressed me was nemesis system from that lord of the rings game, and it was still a very simple system, but of course it got copyrighted.fuck, there are RPGs coming out last 10 years that don't even have NPC schedules, like going to bed everything, talking with eachother etc. Gothic, 2001 game had it but today it's all about graphics or "story" which always makes me laugh because every time I play games praised for their writing and plot IT'S ALWAYS bunch of cliche writing 101 tropes and predictable plot twists that would get ridiculed and look amateurish if it was a book or a movie. no wonder games are not seen as artps. my dream game would be a fantasy simulator mmolike WoW but with complex economy and living world, maybe even some content like wilderness could be procedurally generated, like plants for alchemy appearing randomly in places with distinct geographical features near lakes or near trees, dialogues could be AI generated so you could type in anything

Which among a ton of promises was a load of horseshit. The second was Todd Howard showing off the AI in that Oblivion documentary where the NPCs would have feelings about each other, might kill/stealth from each other, could light their dog on fire for making a mess while they were out, needed food/sleep, etc. And then the final came comes out and they have scripted schedules and nothing else.My assumption is that everything I see in a game is bullshit until I'm actually playing it myself.

>>729195037>would have growing trees and passing time and that if you planted seeds in a grove when you're a kid then there might be an entire forest when you're an adult. That does not sound like something that is extremely difficult to implement
>>729189962I don't know how old you are but I guess it has to do with age. The last games I said 'wow' was the PT demo, and Days Gone, both on PS4. A lot of modern games look really good, but I no longer feel impressed. Maybe SH 2 remake, but the overcast atmosphere makes achieving photorrealism easier for some reason. Good HDR is more important than Ray Tracing.
>>729195260It's definitely doable nowadays but given the memory constraints of the xbox and the reliance on baked lighting I doubt it could've been done then. At least not dynamically. Maybe as a scripted event. And considering Fable is entirely small fenced off areas it doesn't even make sense given that gameplay.

>>729189962I thought they would look realer. I'm not really disappointed. As a kid, I thought that while the move to 3d was really cool, something was lost in the transition. Games made in 2d were always more impressive to me, but I knew we'd see less and less of them. The modern era of indie fakebit games doesn't satisfy the itch either.
>>729189962I gave up on actual "world" improvements like ten years ago once it became obvious that chasing photorealism was the end goal instead of creating more interactive games that allow you to exert more influence on the world and the characters in it.That said, the last game to "wow" me in any real sense was probably Cyberpunk, and only because I was impressed with how well the characters are animated during dialogue and how they'd sort of roam around and operate independently of you. It made them feel less robotic.
>>729164068Damn this looks like Prague from Deus Ex
>>729189962my first "next gen" gaming experience was halo 3. The human character models in that game are pretty terrible so I at least expected grafix to get better. We've been in a diminishing returns phase since approximately 2016 at the latest and as far back as 2013 depending on your standards for things based on Crysis 3's graphical tech. The bigger priority should be things like efficient and non-taxing long simulation distance, more complex sound mixing (We've been basically in the sound tech dark ages ever since Creative Technologies stopped iterating on EAX and we've been reliant on OpenAL instead for the past almost 20 years now), and more efficient tracking of variables for things like alterations to world state. These are so thoroughly ignored developers who try to implement creative solutions need to engage in weird hacks or entirely third party methods which the proprietary engines they use aren't built for resulting in detrimental issues unique to each developer/game release.

Thinking that "progress" is a linear thing where perfect photorealism sits at the end waiting for you to finally reach it is unironically one of the best indicators that you're an NPC and brown. Utterly devoid of soul and the capability to look beyond your immediate surroundings, just a flesh automaton, the eternal hylic. >>729237720The visual effect of ants crawling over the screen when AA is turned off is problem not inherent just to one engine.
