For me it's when low poly models with 2d face textures like in MegaMan legends.
I unironically like the default UE5 aesthetic as long as it's set in a sci-fi setting.
i love when 2d and 3d art mixfor me its old games would create complex dynamic moving things by just having a few assets each move in a very simple way and layer themalso just the really nice blue beach water that games used to have
I like aliasing and "jagginess" unironically. Even more so in pixel art - the vast majority of pixel artists hand-place anti-aliasing into the edges and lines on a sprite, but I like it more when they don't.
>>729165830I don't like some of the particle effects used in some hd 2d games but man do I fucking love the aesthetic. I don't know what it is about it but man It really makes me feel something
>>729166837Can't speak for everyone but for me the main appeal of HD2D is that it feels like an evolution of Mode7 graphics.
>>729166837protup: you can play any retro game, put on a pair of goggles smeared with vasoline and you will achieve same effect
>>729165830Not really "art" persay but if you've played games like chibi robo that gibberish talk that they use instead of text beeps.m.youtube.com/shorts/zNKy9E-JO8Q
>>729165830The legends aesthetic is just god tier in general. More games need to do it not just indie games and itch.io projects.
I like how GPU renders with dithering. you can see with some newer unreal games
>>729167437I always like this>Chibi Robo>Captain Rainbow>Chulip>Banjo gamesI always heard the dad say "DANGEROUS" when speaking
>>729165830I like when the character grunts and shout when in combat, I think it sounds cool and its kinda funnyhttps://youtu.be/HY1OUlYA-o4?si=XyBh4hik-Toq6_PG&t=164Also when NPCs don't speak a real language like the gibberish in the original Monster Hunter or like the Teensies in Rayman
>>729165830takes too much money, why else hasn't it resurfaced bar a few exceptions
I like it when "voice acting" is just random grunting and mumbling
isn't that just an unlit diffuse texture?
I love when games used vertex color to paint on lighting / general colors mixed with textures. Rare was the best at it.
>>729166579zelda's Dead Hand is the perfect example of this. the aliasing in that game was gorgeous
>>729165830I love the hand drawn anime expressions mixed with chunky polygonal limbs and the N64 filtered shading. Mario Tennis 64 was very charming.
I like dungeon crawlers where the enemies are just PNGs.
>>729176478Rare was terrible at it, who are you kidding? They looked at a primary color wheel and picked the opposite and called it a day. Conker's has a clown puke look all over the game and Banjo is tasteless.
>>729165830I don't know what Vagrant Story's deal is. Everything on PS1 was low polygon 3D, but there it looks like they leaned heavily into for the time detailed texture work. They were not going for intentional angular look like MML, for example.
>>729177386vagrant story was pushing the limits of 3d on ps1 and basically offsetting limitations with artistry. emulating it actually reveals how much effort went into assets ps1 or crt tvs could not possibly do justice to.
>>729177243I miss DRPGs on Vita.
>>729177352I am curious why they chose brown for their primary mascot's core color in both Banjo and DK. Doesn't stand out very well in their naturalistic worlds.Got any examples you like for using the vertex coloring techniques?
>>729172927It's definitely not more expensive because indie games do it all the time. The reason it doesn't show up in AA or triple A is because they have more money to burn so they go in on full 3d models
>>729177868>>729177386lots of hot air for a game nobody played. It's not omegaboost, just play it if you want to have an opinion on it.>>729178234on ps1, spyro, crash, tail concerto, threads of fate. on ps2 kya dark lineage is the pinnacle of the technique.
>>729165830The almost cubist splotchy abstract textures in Marathon: Infinity make my dick so hard
>>729165830Camelot's very specific way of doing sprites.
>>729178398
>>729170815>>729174282>Too impatient to actually sit through someone's whole-ass soliloquy and just want to read the text instead>Gibberish or grunts lets a character give a vocal performance without constantly getting hacked off mid-sentenceThe only characters that should be fully voiced are random RTS units or guards in stealth games.>>729178314It doesn't show up in those games because they are less coherent and people have to burn political clout on every decision, so the only things that get approved are the compromises that no one is happy with and whatever works with those compromises.
>>729165830i love psx particle effects, especially the ones done by squaresoft, they all look really cool, colorful and clean to me
>>729165830Might as well say "low poly" thread
>>729178218>dat feel when all three of these are now on PC
>>729178331Spyro and Crash do a great job with vertex colors. I think Kya and Jak and Daxter don't actually paint on vertex colors I think it's real time per vertex lighting at that point on the PS2.
>>729178408This
>>729165830Water color. Sadly, even pre-rendered days it was barely used.
>>729178314if they have more money to burn, they'd use it to make the gameplay better haha right
>>729178567Kya uses vertex colors, try playing the game.
PS2-era JRPGs.
>>729178854We should have stopped at PS2 in terms of graphical advancements. I swear only sports games and WW2 shooters were chasing realism back then.
>>729178496>MISS
>>729178567Jak and Daxter at least baked all the different variations of vertex colors for time of day and would interpolate between themany sort of vertex color change for the environment was pre baked and the game would swap to it as neededpretty cool stuff
>>729178854oh my god yes
>>729179143
I love those 3d babes made for promo art in early 2000's
>>729178854God, what I would give to have the ability to generate a virtual world and shape it as I please, to make it a world that will remain forever in the early 2000s and immerse myself in it like in the Matrix
2D sprites in a 3D environment
>>729178854>>729179143Did TZA improve the visuals at all?
Unrefined pixel art. Pokemon Red and Final Fantasy 1 have less polished art than later games, but there's charm to it.>>729178628>Water colorZelda: Skyward Sword is gorgeous
>>729179686god rogue galaxy was a boring ass game, literally 0 IQ combat
>>729179723TZA has a distracting color tint for no reason.
>>729179686>what I would give to have the ability to generate a virtual world and shape it as I please, to make it a world that will remain forever in the early 2000s and immerse myself in it like in the Matrixjust....make it? literally what is stopping you
>>729179742>Water colorAnd Tales of Arise
>>729165830Expressive portraits. I cannot for the life of me find gifs from Front Mission 3. It's amazing what couple of images can do.
>>729165830>>729178524Puristfags will see this beautiful ass game and just think "Disgusting, this needs 3 CRT filters, a fake curved screen effect with TV border, rendering at 4k but downscaled to 240p, and pixel wobble turned on."
>>729165830It's incredible how much you can achieve with few polygons if you know what you're doing.
>>729180458>if you know what you're doing. You see, that's the problem...
>>729165830Every single 3d game on the saturn and ps1 and n64 is "low poly".What you're chasing isn't "low poly" it's generic anime art direction and character design.
>>729180348That's mainly applicable to sprites which were made with CRT interlacing in mind. Models are models, and sharper you can see them the better.
>>729180348More like "Disgusting, this needs koko-aio with TV border, rendering at 240p, and pixel wobble and dithering turned on.", and they would be correct
>>729166837Loved the look of these games too, I really hope the Dragon Quest games 4-6 also get remakes.
>>729165830Color cycling on switches, panels, electronics, etc
>>729165830Honestly love Scotts whole vvibe
>>729178331>lots of hot air for a game nobody playedWeirdly hostile for absolutely no reason.
>>729181760Hell yeah
>>729183513It might surprise you to hear there's a whole game attached to those gifs.
>>729177243>those character namesAnon... where is your soul...Regardles, EO2 is based. Good taste, anon.
>>729184979Yeah, I've played it.Why are you being weird about it?
