i love when 2d and 3d art mix
for me its old games would create complex dynamic moving things by just having a few assets each move in a very simple way and layer them

also just the really nice blue beach water that games used to have

I like aliasing and "jagginess" unironically.

Even more so in pixel art - the vast majority of pixel artists hand-place anti-aliasing into the edges and lines on a sprite, but I like it more when they don't.

I love when games used vertex color to paint on lighting / general colors mixed with textures. Rare was the best at it.

Rare was terrible at it, who are you kidding? They looked at a primary color wheel and picked the opposite and called it a day. Conker's has a clown puke look all over the game and Banjo is tasteless.

I don't know what Vagrant Story's deal is. Everything on PS1 was low polygon 3D, but there it looks like they leaned heavily into for the time detailed texture work. They were not going for intentional angular look like MML, for example.

vagrant story was pushing the limits of 3d on ps1 and basically offsetting limitations with artistry. emulating it actually reveals how much effort went into assets ps1 or crt tvs could not possibly do justice to.

It's definitely not more expensive because indie games do it all the time. The reason it doesn't show up in AA or triple A is because they have more money to burn so they go in on full 3d models

Spyro and Crash do a great job with vertex colors.

I think Kya and Jak and Daxter don't actually paint on vertex colors I think it's real time per vertex lighting at that point on the PS2.

Jak and Daxter at least baked all the different variations of vertex colors for time of day and would interpolate between them
any sort of vertex color change for the environment was pre baked and the game would swap to it as needed
