That post implies Bop It! is a badly-designed game when it's probably one of the most fun toys ever made.

It absolutely can be.

degradation of a hobby etc
>>
Sex with women is just Bop It for grown ups.

Your subject implies a false dichotomy. I can't judge the tweet without knowing what it's in response to.

>you aren't telling a good story
neither does tetris or pacman or bomberman or pong or minecraft
and neither do football, basketball, tennis, golf, racing, running, etc.

gameplay is the story and everyone has their own to a degree and that's the cool part about vidya
the more interactivity there is the better

What's wrong with bop it?
>>
Nope. If it was it wouldn't be a game.

>for grown ups
lmao

>gameplay is the story
One of the smartest things ever said on /v/
However, it does not follow that more interactivity (or higher difficulty) is therefore automatically better. The question is, is it in service of the theme?

gameplay > artstyle > story
>if the artstyle is shit, I won't consider buying it in the first place
>if the gameplay isn't good, I might buy the game based on false impressions given the artstyle is good, but I won't finish it nor recommend it to others
>if the story is good but the gameplay or artstyle are shit, I'll just watch a walkthrough or some video essay on youtube
if your goal is to sell copies, gameplay is king.
if your goal is to put out a piece of art and have people enjoy it, regardless of profit, all of this is irrelevant.

Gameplay is an axis of creativity in video games. You can neglect story as much as you want and still make a good game. I would have said you can't neglect gameplay entirely and still have a good game that doesn't invalidate the medium, but we all know it's possible to do. Telltale did it for years to great success with only the barest minimum of interactivity. And AdHoc is still doing it, with only just slightly more actual gameplay.
So suffice it to say, good gameplay has a much higher weight in a video game than a good story. A bad story can sink a game, but a good story can completely salvage a mediocre, or even bad, game on its own. Just look at the KOTOR games or VTM:B. Those are objectively kind of busted and awkward, but they're so well written that they had no trouble capturing imaginations.
>>
Why is just telling a story like lesser mediums the goal?
Being inherently more is why video games are a better medium.

I hate zoomers and retarded millennials that gaslit themselves into thinking game's were all about "delivering a story"

Just fuck off. Delivering a good story is ONE THING a game CAN do. It is by no means the only thing that matters nor is it particularly important to the vast majority of games.
