Their Personal Skill lacks the utility and versatility of Camilla's and Elise's, their stat growths are just average all around, and not having full access to every class like Robin does is actually far more limiting than most people give credit for. The Nohr/Hoshido Noble is just outclassed in everything it is trying to do except be a dragon, which really isn't that good in Fates unfortunately...Support-wise, they are a large victim of Fates' (localized) support writing -- they just act like entirely different characters depending on the pairing. Sometimes they are kind of a lovable naive goofball, other times they are super serious straight man that has no time with their partner's bullshit. They aren't the WORSE case of such in the game, but it is very apparent with supports like Camilla, Ryoma, Soliel, or Takumi (notice how they hit the supports with the royals, the units that most people will go for). This leads into their character and story issues--Story-wise, they have the BIGGEST blue-haired millstone around their necks -- Azura. No matter the route, their chemistry is horrifically toxic, all take and no give. It is always her that comes up with the bad ideas that Corrin just goes along with. They rarely come up with their own plan, and what little times they do she just blatantly ignores with no consequence. A Corrin that is "a proper lord" would be considered the most pussy-whipped lord in the series.I like the dwagon lord, but I doubt them "being their own person" and not sharing the MU slot would change their popularity to any significant degree. They have some crippling flaws that most Lords are grateful they don't deal with. And Alear does just sort of mogs them, they basically have the same story done (moderately) better.

Awakening is a very "turn your brain off" game and the heavy nerfs and rebalances to unit growths and juggernauting potential does make the Fates cast distinctly worse than Awakening's hilariously inflated stat sticks. NosTanking is just uber powerful. But I would argue in terms of "this unit is an irreplaceable centerpiece of 90% of people's campaigns", Camilla just have far better longevity. It's far from impractical to get better nos-tankers between Robin and Gen II units. Tharja's bases are fine for Gen I standards but not really standout while Camilla's is just ridiculous. And in Fates' meta, a flying spellblade prepromote with zero EXP penalties clears 90% of that game's roster (jesus is the Birthright crew SO BAD).

I don't know what made people decide MUs are some completely different entity from lords when the only real distinction is that they have some customizability options. Only Kris can you decide things about like their background and personality. Every "My Unit" since then has a pre-existing backstory, personality, and completely original dialogue. Every lord since Seliph has had no set love interest, so you can't say it's because you can do things like choose who to marry. You can't say it's because they're unrealistically charismatic because nearly every lord is so charimatic they can easily sway strangers to join their cause.

Byleth is stoic, not underwritten. They aren't some invisible gacha game/dating sim protag whose text box choices mean nothing, they have a pretty clear story arc and character no matter which route.
