There are usually advantages given to lower places but those tend to be balanced out. In Mario Kart you have the blue shell and Shock hurting 1st the most, but it was also easier to break away so you weren't threatened by as many items as the rest of the pack, and shortcuts aren't gatekept by speed items quite as much (until Intermission Kart World at least). CTR didn't have that issue at all, and All-Stars Racing Transformed was also way easier on first. In this game slipstream is incredibly strong which keeps the pack together and makes breakaways really hard (and it's unavailable to 1st of course), and there are two separate items that uniquely target 1st place on top of having to deal with pack threats as well. The fact that first place's choice of items for accessing shortcuts (which are insanely powerful in this game and present on almost every course) is Omochao which doesn't show up often means you'll usually need to skip those cuts, and if you haven't broken away from the pack by that time you have no means of winning the race at that point. This game is uniquely and inherently mean to 1st place in an effort to promote the idea that "anyone can win," and it makes the meta really lame to play though.
