Honestly? The former, but I still enjoy parts of it.
The parts where it falls short fall very hard though.
One of my least favorite ones was acquiring seeds for farming. Considering there was a hard trading requirement later in the game for a mount, that there wasn't a seed vendor was just so fucking retarded.
Just strip every wild plant and hope that the not fully grown ones actually give you a seed or wait for an entire year and come back to this random spot in the wilderness.
This and the fact that the easiest and best building material was fucking dirt pissed me off. No point making individual clay roof tiles. Fuck that noise.
The different rocks were cool and there are more plants and decorations but the core gameplay is very flawed.

I've been itching to play but want to wait for the procgen dungeons in the next update. Might take a while, the last major update wasn't that long ago so maybe I'll play the last plague while waiting, or I'll just burn out before it drops

Wtf, it's pretty extensive compared to other survival games. It's well written, interesting and the story locations are dope.
It's a solitary game, which every npc trader spells out to you. If you expect a steady stream of writing and lore comparable to a rpg you're confused about what type of game you're playing. Any more would hamper the feeling of being out in the wilderness, isolated and alone.
Imo there are almost too many ruins.

it's alright, everything feels overbalanced and underpowered. I had more fun with it than minecraft, both solo and with friends.
Some aspects are extremely grindy and downright tedious. But not as grindy as valheim. Chores aren't content, and there's not enough of the latter.

I found the lore journals cringe and poorly written. Sanity and temporal storms are underbaked mechanics, and it's incredibly stupid how giant chunks of the world can be uninhabitable for no reason. Overall 7.8/10

Yes and no.

Its more focused on semi-realism and survival. Everything will take a lot longer than in minecraft, as even just getting an axe to fell trees is a multi-step process.

Making a pick is harder.

I like it better, but it is a different game that's based on the same foundation. (It supposedly started as a mod.)
They're slowly fleshing out vanilla. It has vehicles and mounts. (a boat and an elk atm) Next patch is adding some critters and more variety to stuff.

Torch is infinite unless you put it on a wall, then it lasts two days unless picked back up, which resets it to infinite.

Oil Lamp (Fat + clay bowl) is infinite, but kinda crap.
Candles (3 beeswax + 1 flax fiber in a cooking pot, will ruin the pot for food cooking) are infinite light, stack up to 9 in a tile for more illumination, and are an ingredient for lanterns, the best light source in game as of now.
Lanterns take 2 glass panes, a candle, and a metal plate. Later on, you can use a gold or silver plate to make them slightly better light sources.

But yes, it is a game of long term tasks.

The game has a really steep learning curve, but most of the initial difficulty is gated behind clay stuff honestly. Once you get a cooking pot and an understanding of making meals, simply surviving aint so bad

i've been playing it and am just about to go into my second winter. if you enjoy the survival aspect of minecraft (that 10-30 minutes it takes to throw together a dirt hovel, acquire food and basic tools)
its pretty much that expanded on greatly
it's a little daunting to start and you have to do some reading to figure out prospecting and some other critical mechanics.
apparently i got lucky with my first map; i settled probably 500 blocks from my spawn point, and have had EVERYTHING i needed within 1000k blocks of where i settled so far (even a few lucky surface borax deposits lol)

the combat sucks and hunting is a pain in the ass, though. you will get randomly bodied by bears no matter how careful you are. the wildlife is more deadly than the monsters are

Game is incredibly good imo. People might suggest that its mechanics are tedious, but in practice it becomes the opposite. You focus on small things and enjoy day-to-day life with daily tasks feeling fulfilling and fleshed out. Sitting at home in the winter, keeping warm, lighting the stove, baking your bread, going out to feed your animals, it all keeps you immersed and focused in the moment instead of a game like minecraft where you have a list of tasks you need to complete always in your mind to get your goal, gather reeds, make a cow farm, farm books, get an enchanting table, grind quartz for experience, enchant fortune on your pick, get full diamond, grind more quartz, enchant all your gear, and NOW you can play the game. All of these tasks are in your mind at the start of the game instead of just making any one of them immersive and compelling like VS does.
