The close-up of the characters is darkened just right to cover up imperfections while drawing attention to the details in the texturing. Also helps immensely that there is no visible face as that always draws attention to the graphics being rendered instead of real.

outdoor fire escapes are dangerous during a fire and also dangerous during not a fire. newer buildings are built so that going down the indoor stairs is the safest choice in a fire, unlike 100 year old brownstones that instantly turn into chimneys.
