Very few duelists ran more than one copy of a card, meaning most of their decks were 40 wholly unique cards. They had zero deck consistency, but still managed to draw exactly the cards they wanted.

But since most of his cards didn't synergize that well, you end up with a pretty mish-mashed deck. The third is that he needed to play a pretty defensive deck. They needed to actually let Kaiba and Aigami get their strategies off, meaning he couldn't play offensively. Defense-oriented decks are usually shit, but if you actually want the opponent to play, it's a sacrifice the protagonist has to make. And unfortunately, most legacy defense-oriented cards are trash too. No one would ever use Marshmacaron in the year 2012.
