I just bought Mario Sunshine and played for the first time ever and it's way worse than I thought it was gonna be.

This game is just so fucking god-awfully ugly and hard to control. The overly bouncy animations combined with the dated visuals of the Gamecube is awful.

I had a hard time controlling Mario with Fludd and thought it was just a skill issue but when Shadow Mario took away Fludd in that one level I realized just how shit the controls really are.

It is NOT a skill issue, Mario is seemingly perpetually drunk with or without Fludd.

One credit I will give this game is that its environment is coherent. I like how you can look off a cliff in one stage and you'll see a different stage in the distance. I like how it looks like you're actually on an island in the ocean.

I HATED Mario Odyssey for this reason. In Odyssey, Peach's castle is just floating on a giant cylinder in the middle of fucking nowhere with a shitty skybox made to look like rolling hills in the distance.

I don't know if space itself making sense is too much to ask for a Mario game but it makes the experience a little more enjoyable when you're not running around in an island in the middle of a void all the time.

Well that's it then, pack it up boys Nintendo is finished, Mario is over.

>and hard to control.

It's the most responsive and tight controlling 3d mario game, git gud

In Odyssey and especially 64 it takes him fucking ages to go from a stop to full speed

the only real problem I had with its control was how long the activation window for the sideflip turn is, it felt like it was just one beat too long, I'd either trigger it accidently or have to wait an awkward amount of time before normal jump access returned.

I wholeheartedly disagree, these are the two strongest points for me. It's brimming with style, and Mario feels tighter and more precise to control than in any other 3D Mario game.
Where it falls short are the shitty level shines and the fact that you have to do them all. Plus recycled bosses get old fast.

If you hate Odyssey and Sunshine, what platformers do you even like? You just might not like Mario platformers. Have you ever played, and if so do you like the n64 version of OOT? What about any older harder to control games? Games with really specific control schemes just might not be for you, which is what Sunshine is. Weird controls are often a desirable feature of older console games, because not everyone always wants the solid swift controls of modern games.
