I'm ashamed to admit that my first JRPG was FFVII in 2015, so it's shocking that this game came out the same exact year & is a much deeper game, yet as a casual i never heard of it. Why is it so underrated despite such a revolutionary concept?

normalfags saw chinese words and thought it would be a shit game
the filter worked as intended

except it's not a deeper game at all
>>
FF7 has the better story and is just more epic and thus appeals to more people. I love both though

>Why?
It was a 2D game. Everyone was being encouraged to jerk off over 3D graphics on the PS1/2.

the weird bullshit genre shifting REALLY turned most reviewers off, and it never got any marketing in the west so it never took off to near the extent of FF which ahd been going for over like a decade at that point.
It's gotten more praise in recent years but the first game was really not great especially for the esoteric nonsense you had to do for a lot of the wars if you wanted to win without losing huge swathes of people.

Wild Arms sorta bullied it out as a "new series" in that space. But it stuck around. You just didn't hear of it cause you didn't play JRPGs.
Suikoden is usually recommended right alongside star ocean, wild arms, lotd for ps1, a step above like, jade cocoon, legend of legaia, lunar remake.

It came out the same year as Chrono Trigger, not FF7.

Fucking really?

not that anon, but yeah it is. it's the game where the largest percentage of the cast is relevant and useful, which is the major issue the series has. Also, Thomas and Cecile are awesome.
>>

It's massively flawed. Having to switch protagonists and cross over the same areas over and over dragged the whole thing down. Also, Thomas is a sorry ass bitch. What a joke of a 'fourth protagonist'.

>Thomas is a sorry ass bitch.
sorry to hear about your shitty taste. maybe you'll mature out of it.

I like Suikoden, but I'm not sure that I would describe it as deep or revolutionary.

>>729204965
I agree with that ranking, other than that I would possibly switch around 2 and 5 or rate them equally. They have pretty similar strengths and weaknesses.

It predates FF7 by two years zoom zoom

Furthermore

Holy fuck no it isn't. The strategy battles are scripted, and the game loves forcing mandatory party members in your team constantly. It's really annoying recruiting a new character and then the game only allots two free spaces for party members because the plot demands you take four other ones.
>Why is it so underrated despite such a revolutionary concept?
Because the sequel is better. And nothing Suikoden does is revolutionary, it's a shallow mish mash of traditional JRPG and SRPG.
