Where all my oldfags and zoomers who know their roots? Give me your top 10 favorite, not what you think are the best games, or the most influential, but your FAVORITE games on the NES. These are the games all these years later you still pop in and play from time to time.

This even though i never got past that bike section. I wanted the whole game to be like the first level. More double dragon thing and less whatever it was later.
>>
also speaking of games i really liked the first level of, the skateboard game with the monkey. town & country surf designs wood and water rage. i don't think i ever cleared that first level.
>>

that was one of two very dramatic jumps in visuals and design complexity between console generations. the other being SNES/Genesis to PS1/N64. both were mindblowing to me.

For me the jump from ps1 to ps2 was the most dramatic. I mean resident evil 3 to resident evil 4??? We went from low poly wiggly models to practically photorealism

Also to all the people mentioning battletoads: am I wrong for thinking battletoads x double dragon on SNES was way better?

I can do it now, but as a kid I'm not sure if I ever even got past the first phase of that fight.

>>729208031
Practically every other stage is some new bullshit gimmick, which is part of why it's so difficult. Getting good at the early stages doesn't do much to prepare the player for the rest of the game.

>>729208269
I'm actually more fond of the NES these days.

>>729208627
I'm a bit surprised to see Valis listed. I have a soft spot for the series even though it's not particularly good, but I really didn't care for the NES entry.

Yeah, I know the Genesis Valis games are more well known, I still need to get around to finishing Valis IV, but I like a lot of games everyone elses seem to hate? Like I kind of like the Die Hard NES game and yeah it has some problems but I find it very interesting.

I also think Jaws, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street are not that bad.

Fair enough. I had some fun with Deadly Towers and Bokosuka Wars, which I've seen others describe as some of the worst games ever.

I think the PC Engine Valis games are the best ones, though Valis 3 (which is probably the strongest entry overall) is mostly identical on the Genesis.

Yup that's Nintendo World Cup. Spike V'Ball and Crash 'n the Boys Street Challenge were two other ones I wanted to mention, but I've never gotten the chance to play them with living humans and not computers so I can't recommend it in good faith.

>>729209131
Honestly, I’ve got a weird soft spot for Magic of Scheherazade, even though it’s janky as hell and half the mechanics feel like they got made up halfway through dev. It’s got this endearing mix of Zelda, Dragon Quest, and absolute fever dream pacing. Also agree hard on Nightshade-janky point-and-click action hybrid with awful controls, but there’s just something about its tone and style that makes it memorable. It really feels like one of those games that only could’ve happened on NES: ambitious, weird, and charmingly busted.
>>
Mario 3
Zelda 2
Shadowgate
Little Nemo's Adventures in Dreamland
Faxanadu
Jackal
Blaster Master
Milon's Secret Castle
Punch-Out
Mega Man 2

There's also this game that I cannot remember the name of for the life of me. You had a bunch of characters (maybe a family, I dunno) you could select that all played a little differently from one another and you had to explore this maze of sorts. My cousins had it and I'd always play the shit out of it whenever I stayed the night over at their place.
>>
>>729209731
Weirdly, I am convinced that the average age here is creeping upwards more than it used to when teens probably outnumbered everyone else 10:1. Now it's a bunch of 30+ dudes mixed in.

>>729209976
A lot of the games that get credit for being dogshit on the NES are just obtuse or have some fundamental issue like difficulty rebalance based on region. The actual poopoo titles aren't even memorable enough to come up, but you can at least do something in a game like Fester's Ques or Jaws. I don't get how anyone likes Bayou Billy though. The only way to survive combat are jump attacks over and fucking over.
>>
>>729211637
Legacy of the Wizard
>>
>>729211857
Was just about to say. The last thing I did was solve the most diabolical block pushing puzzle. I got through it but that part scarred me
>>
>>729211343
I still wonder what the thought process was for having both turn-based and action-based enemy encounters in Magic of Scheherazade. I don't object to it, but it's an odd choice.

Nightshade made an impression on me because I was accustomed to a game's entire storyline being one badly translated paragraph in the manual, while Nightshade actually has some decent writing. It also somehow still has what is probably the most clever implementation of continues I've seen in a game.

>>729211637
You're probably trying to think of Legacy of the Wizard.
>>
>>729211912
Pretty sure the block pushing BS filtered me as a kid.

Yep, that's the one. I remember that game being cryptic as fuck, but I definitely enjoyed it. I think I'm gonna find a ROM and give it a go this weekend when I have a bit more time available after Christmas.
>>
>>729211912
I imagine I know what part you're talking about; there's one section that requires you to get pretty creative with the glove (and to have read the manual or experimented a lot to understand what all you can do with it.) It took me an awfully long time to get through there as a kid.
>>
>>729212194
I want to get around to doing that some day too. I need to finally beat it to have closure.
>>
>>729212224
Yeah, it goes beyond any block pushing puzzle because you have to push blocks in midair AND diagonally with an nes dpad
>>
Blaster master, life force, shadowgate, rc pro am, super Mario, mario 2 jp, duck hunt, ultima 4, defender, solstice.
I was blessed to have a fairly decent variety of genres. Not just platforms and beat em up. All decent games. Recently sold most of the games and got a flash cart with the proceeds I still just play those anyway.
>>
>>729206878
Castlevania
Ninja Gaiden
Rygar
Wanpaku Graffiti
Final Fantasy
>>
>>729212032
Startropics and Kabuki are some blasts from the past. I had forgotten about them in my list, however, reading their names made me immediately remember them. I even recalled needing the damned manual for a code in Startropics.

>>729212261
That's definitely a part of why I want to beat it after all these years. It honestly reminds me a lot of La-Mulana with how goddamned cryptic it can be at times. I might have to make a map to know where I am in relation to some of the chests to see if that helps me out.
>>
>>729212194
>>729212261
>>729212194
If you do decide to revisit it, be sure to read the manual. There's some information in there that's really important and that you're unlikely to figure out on your own.

I think all the secrets needed to clear the game are reasonably telegraphed, but it is hard to figure out. The later bosses can be pretty tough too, depending on who you confront them with.
