>RPG famous for bad writing>it's not even that badSeriously. The writing is about on-par with JRPGs like Persona. Why did people shit on it so much?
it was a largely kneejerk reaction to the writing being widely agreed as bad without any kind of anime aesthetic to cover itlet's not be revisionists and pretend it's good though, the general plot is badly made and the individual character writing ranges from okay to catastrophic
>>729208112>The writing is about on-par with JRPGs like Persona.No.
>>729208112it was a bunch of cringe millennial shit, it wasn't awful but it sure wasn't good and there was enough cringe to make fun ofcomparing it to any persona is dishonest, not every persona game has god-tier writing but even the lesser ones are still at least solidly in the realm of good
>>729208170>>729208174All these flaws can be applied to most JRPGs. For example, Persona 3. It's only excused because that had better combat.
>>729208317okay, don't really careyiik is still not good
>>729208112Saying the writing is bad doesn't tell the whole story. The main character is an unlikable piece of shit with no redeeming qualities and never shuts the fuck up. His story is both annoying and pretentious, and he never grows/improves as a person. And it's all completely unironic; you're expected to root for this guy to be some unsung hero when he's just a giant douchebag that never gets better. His supporting cast of party members aren't that much better either (especially not the one female that I cannot remember the name of).
>>729208425>And it's all completely unironic; you're expected to root for this guy to be some unsung hero when he's just a giant douchebag that never gets betterthis is not true, play the game or at least watch a playthrough to understand that he is meant to be a piece of shit you do not root for at allagain, the writing is not good, but you are misrepresenting the actual content of the game for apparently no reason at all
>>729208317this is just trolling at this point
>>729208582P3's writing is awful. It's also really pretentious with all the suicide imagery. It has a lot in common with YIIK, just with a different theme and a silent protagonist.
>>729208507I sure want to play a game with a protagonist who is bad on purpose "ironically".
>>729208704i never said you should want to or that it was a good thing, but you are being actively disingenuous if you state that mister alex yiik is written to be a sympathetic character
>>729208704Yet it's okay that Tartarus is monotonous on purpose?
On the surface
>>729208660p3's writing is great. it has an actual theme which, aside from being reinforced aesthetically through its artwork, is explored both through some of its better side stories and through its main story. the protagonist goes through an arc and ultimately is able to come to terms with that theme and reach a satisfying conclusion that both fits the actual plot and fits the thematic dialog.it's one of my favorite game stories and i'd put it alongside other games that actually bother to explore meaningful themes in interesting ways like kotor 2 or deus ex. comparing it to fucking yiik is just trolling and the fact that you're not even bothering to substantively argue the point beyond "P3's writing is awful and pretentious because suicide is bad" is enough reason not to engage further
>>729208754I never said that. You're arguing with more than one person.>>729208771I never said anything about Persona 3, nor played it. And I won't play YiiK with a protagonist like that either.
>>729209015Is there a vidya channel with as much soul as Running Shine? His humour hits all the best hallmarks of old /v/. It's super comfy. It sucks knowing we'll likely never get a YouTuber with even half the authenticity of RS.
>>729208112>The writing is about on-par with JRPGs like Persona.Ooooh that's good b8.
>>729208425Having played the game in all its forms, lemme just say that the problem is that Alex really isn't that bad. The rest of the story wants you to think he is, and wants you to believe that this is some complex, carefully crafted arc where he starts bad, learns a lesson, and then comes to realize how to be a better person after a surreal, extra-dimensional literal soul search... But he's not really. He's annoying and shittily written, but so is everyone else. Despite them being worse people than Alex, we're supposed to side with these random literal losers and faggots against a guy who didn't do anything to actually deserve to be the villain of his own life story. In fact, you get low enough in Alex's mind dungeon and the game literally tells you that, YET AGAIN, the entire narrative of the game is bullshit. Alex didn't have an easy life and cunts like Vella are retarded losers who have no place treating Alex like the worst person in all realities. The true problem is that in the process of discovering that and learning to form your own opinion about Alex and his whole fucking life, the game is FUCKING BORING AND TEDIOUS AND GLEEFULLY WASTES YOUR TIME WITH BAD GAME DESIGN DISGUISED AS FAUX-SUBVERSIVE BULLSHIT
>>729208112You made this thread? You know, back in the day THAT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED
>>729208112>The writing is about on-par with JRPGs like PersonaI don't recall Yu ever vibrating with motion.
>>729208660P3 is something you would only get if you grew up in the 80-90s. It's that sort of edgy chuuni that was popular in the early 2000s/late 90s.
>>729208425>The main character is an unlikable piece of shit with no redeeming qualities and never shuts the fuck up. His story is both annoying and pretentious, and he never grows/improves as a personThis was always meant to be the point even in the original but they underestimated just how awful Alex is that people overlooked the actual core of the storythey make it more clear in the update
>>729214047Why exactly does michael hate alex so much?
>>729214393I think it was something like Michael was dating his sister and he did something to make her hate him. She then got into a accident where she fell off a roof and died which Michael blames Alex for. Despite Michael hating Alex so much Alex regards Michael as his friend and due to Alex's influence on broken reality Michael can't actually say or do anything about his hatred. I assume that's why there's weird moments in the game where Michael seems overly harsh and mean out of nowhere. It seems like friendly ribbing at first until you think about the context revealed later on.
>>729208112it was PEAK MILLENIAL-core kinography.
>>729208112Hi joseph
>>729208112LEMONADE.

>>729215056>running shine calls michael a goofy fuck, give him a gun>the devs do>pussy foot around not having wateched RS' video
but Persona has terrible writing too
Is this game so genius that nobody understands it or is it just a incomprehensible clusterfuck?
I will never forget the awards winning Alex line :>"Wanna see me jerk off ??? Watch me... jerk off ?? whatchmejerkoffinfrontofya ??"A tear jerker indeed.
>>729208317No one is buying your game, Brian
>>729221495Its incomprehensible garbage because it clearly got rewritten multiple times. If you look at old videos parts of the game were kept since 2015s probably cause it was voiced and they didnt want to re-do scenes. Its like if you wrote a book, and half way through decided to change the direction of the plot or character motivations but didn't go back to adjust what you already written to account for the new direction.
>>729218352Was she vaguely ethnic?
The writing is terrible but interesting. I can see myself playing this because it does seem to come from I don't know enough about Persona 3 or 5 but Persona 4 wasn't well written. No Persona game is. I don't understand the comparison.
>>729221495Writing is really high level and flies over most peoples’ heads but at the same time some of the concepts like the game’s attempts at being critical of nihilism kind of fall flat. But on the whole it’s a very good story
>>729208112Yiik I.V is more convoluted than kingdom hearts, I really wish people on here stopped pretending it fixed everything. It fixed a lot, but not enough to save it
>>729208170it was always goodtop 5 rpgs even
>>729208582worse, it's copying an E-celeb's opinion
>>729209034Yiik’s stories and themes are legitimately a lot deeper than P3’s. It explores>arrested development and cycles of familial abuse>suicide>the inflated sense of self worth that can come from exploring conspiracy theories>the unrealistic expectations for life that people can gain from media>how the fear of death affects people that don’t believe in spirituality>the danger of chasing women when you haven’t fixed yourself firstAnd they’re all explored in detail. Persona 3 does a very good job of linking its themes of death and the passage of time to its gameplay mechanics but there isn’t nearly as much actually going on.

>>729208112Have you ever stopped to consider that the game that released a decade ago and received fairly consistent updates might have gone through a fair bit of rewrites?Literally the only reason why anyone even talks about this shit is because OneyPlays played it. I'm sick of retards saying this shit is a hidden gem or an ironic masterpiece.No. In the words of James Rolfe, "It sucked back then. And it sucks forever."
>>729228107>released a decade agoIt's been 6 years. Overexaggerating faggot.
>>729208425>you're expected to root for this guy to be some unsung herolol you couldn't have possibly missed the point any harder

>>729221495YIIK is weird because it's not good at all but the way people criticize it makes it clear they're somehow too dumb for even this game or just get their opinions secondhand.

It is a gaming equivalent of a lolcow eceleb or a so bad it is good movie. Only way it is enjoyable is if you engage with it on a meta level.
I always teeter between playing this game with no ill will towards it and playing this game as a joke, but usually I don't buy games that I would end up playing as a joke. I did hear through some threads here a long time ago that they fixed the game somewhat which make it genuinely playable.
>>729231073>>729231134Wish I refreshed before posting this but this considerably helps in me not playing the game since it doesn't seem worth my time.
>>7292311341.5 is still ass, but in a different way from the original. The combat system has been reworked and it feels a bit more like classic Final Fantasy, but the card system is very easy to break over your knee with the right cards and you can trivialize most fights in the game. The new Mind Dungeon is arguably worse and some of the status effects make you wonder if they even playtested the update.
>>729231275>the new mind dungeon is arguably worseNobody could genuinely believe this
>>729227946Is that a... GOLDEN ALPACA?! IN MY SUICIDE PLOT?!
>>729231423Leveling up is more streamlined but having to actually explore the area to get new cards is a fucking nightmare. The map feels like it was cobbled together like a 6 year old making their first Roblox game with premade assets, and the spinny visuals in the background are unironically seizure-inducing and gave me a headache every time I went in. YIIK post-update is one of the few games I've played in my life where I was worried about getting eye-strain, and this was on a modern LCD monitor. It probably would've been worse if it was a retro game being played on a CRT in 1999.
>>729208425>And it's all completely unironic; you're expected to root for this guyhow do you get filtered by fucking yiik?
This is the only game in recent memory I can think of where you can play as a mind warped sociopath so it's kind of interesting for that alone. Really awful gameplay though.
>>729231047isnt michael also alex? and everyone?
>>729233106Michael is distinct from Alex, but there's a Michael in every universe. The Michael that's in your party is from a different universe where Alex was a girl and they dated.
>>729233106I think the game operates off “world soul” mechanics, they have their own souls but they’re all fragments of the original person uploaded into the game
>>729233189Hot.
>>729208112No, it really isn't. It goes all in on a narrative gimmick it has no idea how to use, in the form of an unreliable narrator. Then it lets the unreliable narrator control the structure of the story rather than just the details, whereupon it becomes nonsensical and self-serving. And then it expects you to work out that all the flaws in the writing were intentional signs of the unreliable narrator, when most of them look like the creator was a complete amateur with zero self awareness who just needed someone to hold the "inconsiderate dumbass" ball.
>>729208112I.V is improved masively by directly adressing a lot of the criticism made by people who called it trash, and it's still far from perfecthonestly, outside of the ending I like all of the writingUnless there's real value in playing new game ++, there's static ghosts hinting at things I already knew but is there something else?
>>729234229You can play the pax demo on new game + which is cool and if you max out all your stats you get a secret boss against the tutorial boss where you unlock the sequel characters to use in the original yiik

>>729233189why does alex being an asshole in every reality always result in the end of the world? is the entire game a metaphor for alex fucking up his own life and never learning?
>>729208425>video game player plays game where MC isnt the hero we deserveHe is unlikable by design. In the same way Travis from No More Heroes
>>729235021The game is playing with your understanding of “reality”, it’s framed as parallel universes but it’s really world views. “Entering the soul space” is when your worldview breaks down and you have to do some soul searching.
