are those anno games pretty fun, or are those more like sim city 2000 than C&C?

Factorio is a good game. It has dozens of clones for a reason.

Warzone 2100, my brother. Original devs released its source code many years back, and it's maintained for free by a group of devs.

The campaign is great. Your base is consistent each mission. Some missions you're being attacked, others you're transporting somewhere to retrieve artifacts. You research artifacts and get new technologies. Upgrade your base for future attacks etc. The missions consistently up the ante and the story is great.

I really don't know. Warzone 2100 was my first RTS, and I could not enjoy most ones after it. I hated C&C because it felt nothing like W2100. The game really is something else.

Some advice if you decide to play. Start off on something like easy. Number 2, always have your units set to "return for repair" at medium or heavy damage. Don't waste units, try to get them healed. It'll be a minute before you unlock repair stations they will go to, until then they'll return to base (but repair units are 1st mission). Number three, recycle when you get better tech. So if you unlock a lancer, recycle a twin machine gun unit and then manufacture. That way they keep their rank. Number 4, mission will end upon all objects complete and all artifacts recovered. A lot of times if I have plenty of time on the clock, I wait on collecting all artifacts to get some research done and some stuff built for the base.

I'd advise these settings for campaign (using most recent W2100 release)

2x rank. Time bonus oil: This was added so you didn't have waste your time sitting around the mission (after you finished objectives) building oil while time runs out. This setting just gives time as an oil bonus equal to what it would have been had you waited.

You might be tempted to use the "no timer" option, but I'd advise against it unless you just can't beat the missions. Go easy your first run. I've beat this game over a hundred times.
