We always placed our Christmas tree in the corner of the dining room and I'd get real comfy behind it next to the warm vent with all the lights and presents while I played with a handheld.

For any console? I think it was Pokemon Yellow, I don't remember getting any N64 or SNES games on previous Christmases.

If GameCube, then it was like OP's image, but the black GameCube and also Luigi's Mansion in addition to SSBM.

I miss the days when I could be excited over things like Christmas and getting presents. Doesn't mean I want to go back, but I do miss that.
>>
>be 11
>at my grand parents
>opening presents at random
>brother and I get a gamecube + smash brothers for christmas from mom and dad
>really happy, excited to play it
>we open a few more gifts before getting to the present from grand parents
>its two shitty TIGER electronic handhelds
>like those really shitty mcdonald happy meal toys
>bro and I glance at each other with no expression
>grandma "they hate it"
>mom suddenly guilt trips us for not giving them the same reaction we gave them for the gamecube
>grandma starts crying that they got them bad presents and walks away
>grampa starts yelling at us for being 'ungrateful'
>mom decides we can't play the gamecube until we go back home next week.
>whole week me and bro were pissed.

Only bad christmas memory I can remember.

the only reason I still have any modicum of love for my abusive father is because despite all the shit he did to me and my family through the years (beating me, my mom and my siblings, refusing to pay for things he really should have, never paying child support etc.), despite it all I still remember this man giving me a gamecube with Smash Melee on Christmas in 2001. He also bought F-Zero GX when I was 2003. For that reason no matter how bad of a person my father is, there is always a small part of me that will love him. He really had no fucking idea how awesome those games really were.

I've been reminiscing a lot on the child like wonder I used to have towards such insignificant things- the red ruby legos, the springy door stoppers, flower petals on the sidewalk, book cover art, game manuals. Now my eyes gloss over these things because my brain deems them "redundant information" and I'm day dreaming through life unawarw of all the beauty around me.
I just want that spirit back, even for one day

Christmas morning and birthdays lost their magic when I became an adult. When you make enough money to buy whatever game or toy catches your eye. Especially when the things you REALLY want are so expensive and specialized to your hobbies that no family member could possible gift it to you.

It would be worse if they tried to gift you something related to your hobby but since they do not know shit about it they buy something useless by accident.

Honestly sometimes i feel like people only buy you gifts because they want to feel good about themselves and do not care if you actually like it or not.

If you want those days to be special you need to do special things on them, it's not just about buying gifts for yourself or getting gifts from people. It's about doing something special for yourself or with the people you love.
I just saw a shitty movie (Spongebob) with some friends in an empty theater so we ragged on it the whole time. Yeah, we could do that any time of the year but the point is that we don't because finding time to share with that many people is impossible. But that's not true around holidays, we deliberately make time for each other.

If you don't have friends, go to an aquarium or a zoo or a museum. Take yourself out to dinner and see the local symphony or a small time stage show. Go see the nutcracker or a horror movie rerelease. Do something you wouldn't normally get to do and learn to appreciate yourself again.
>>
>>729212808
Just ask for food or exotic snacks. That's what I do. Its a good gift someone can give you thats consumable so it doesnt take up space.
>>
>>729212868
That sounds like something that would be the moral lesson of one of those christimas movies lol. But it is a legit good advice, you are right.
>>
>>729212868
I don't want to do any of that though. I want to have a day off work and spend it in bed playing video games, chatting online, and drinking large amounts of caffeinated lemon lime carbonated beverages.

lmfao your brother sold it to buy weed. that is the gayest shit I ever heard in my life. my brother was a real nigga. my brother came to my bedroom when I was 14 years old at 4am in the morning and was like "Yo bro... do you want an Xbox 360?". Then he just fucking gave me an Xbox 360, out of the blue with dudebro shit like Madden and an extra controller.

Big bro was out slanging those crackrocks and some junkie had no bread, so he just gave my brother a fucking xbox. He didn't even play video games so he just fucking gave it to me. Then we smoked weed together and played Madden. Good fucking times man.

As for my big bro now.... we he's actually in jail for several years because of sexual assault and battery charges. He was ballin hard when he was selling that work, but ever since he started smoking it his life fell apart and now he's a fucking loser in jail lol. Still, mad grateful for that Xbox 360. I think the only reason people don't like doing this is because it makes the point of giving to each other pointless. If I gift you $20 and you gift me $20, why didn't we just keep our own money? Instead I'll spend $20 on something I think you want or might like, but would never buy for yourself.

Yeesh wtf? My father was a prick when it came to games as well.
>Was graciously given a PS2 during my childhood years
>Treasured it dearly as I was a poorfag and would never have gotten one myself otherwise
>Came with THUG 1 and 2, Need For Speed Underground 2, Spongebob: Lights, Camera, Pants!, and a few other games
>Dad fucking HATED video games
>Also always despised me because I looked like and reminded him of my mom who is a better person than he could ever be
>One day he smashes my PS2 with a hammer
>Makes me watch as he snaps all the discs in half because I left a game in the console after turning it off to go eat lunch
This along with other things he did growing up has left me with a feeling that I don't deserve things and I still to this day struggle to buy stuff for myself without getting sick.

Yeah he's pretty bad, I have countless stories I can recall from my childhood and teenage years of him just selling and destroying stuff I was given or worked my ass off to get. I remember finally getting my apartment and being away from him and everything hit me all at once and I had an anxiety attack so bad I was choking on the air. Didn't realize how rough my upbringing was until that moment. With the carousel of various sports in my youth, comparisons between my life and my siblings, and what I know about him as a person, I'm pretty certain that my dad really, really wanted to have a son like him, which he didn't get with me. When that became obvious as I got to middle school he functionally abandoned me in favor of my sporty brother and sister. After that point we just didn't like each other and he only 'showed up' when things were getting really bad (out of pure obligation) to make them worse before abandoning me again once my Mom had scraped things together

Those are the best, not for Christmas but after going back and forth on how I wanted a PS2 for a while I thought it wasn't happening, on my birthday we got home and I got a PS2 game, I told my parents but I've only got a PS1, stepdad told me to try it on the one above the DVD player, I went in, saw it, and lost my shit.
Hold on to that love anon, all the more reason for you to keep some hope in your life.

>No wonder the sex is so mind-blowing.

My sister brought up a really good point the other day, she was saying that you only experience “young love” once in a lifetime. She’s in her mid 30s with no kids. I just hit 30 and I have an 11 year old daughter, yes me and my ex use to have lots of sex in our late teens going by the green text. She doesn’t live with me but with her mother, me and the mother broke up a long time ago and I’ve been single for 10+ years and honestly I’ve gotten used to it.

Maybe it was from cooming killing my brain, teenager syndrome or just tired of my parents but I really stopped enjoying Christmas when I was like 12 or so. As much as it pains me to say this I feel like history could repeat itself. Some Boomers or Gen X folks might’ve hated that we got to grow up with stuff they didn’t have as kids or just hate it because it’s poising our minds but with the new generations of Gen Alpha and Beta they could be consumed and over reliant on AI since it is the current tech revolution sadly. I may be wrong but it’s worth thinking about since we are halfway through the 2020s and are slowly approaching the 2030s.

My mom always hated my dad because of how abusive he was to her. I think you're overlooking the most simple aspect, which is parents want their kids to go out and play or other activities, also studying. Not getting stuck in your room like a recluse. I know some parents can get a bit goofy and throw a spastic fit, but a lot of kids, especially millennials did play video games too much or had a phase where they were like that, it was very common. And since you're on /v/ there's a chance you might just be the type, I know I was / kinda still am. I don't have a stronger grasp on the younger gen z or alpha, but I get a feeling video games plays a smaller role on the introvert types, they're probably just on discord gooning all day or something.
It's not like parents were exclusively just being completely irrational and the emotional outbursts just came from pure malevolence and ignorance, at least I don't believe so.

Super Mario world on the Gameboy Advance. My dad had no idea that he picked kino, he just picked a game from the first series he recognized. Actually now thay I think deeper about it, it wasn't even Christmas, he just showed up from work one day with a gba and super mario world and surprised me. It was probably the single most meaningful gift I'd ever received, not merely because of the substance of the gift but rather from the fact that my dad had zero interest in video games, in fact he actually disliked them and had constantly remarked about how video games would "spoil my brain". He bought it for me purely due to the fact that he thought I'd enjoy it. Thanks, Dad.

Kek I'm glad the clueless boomers in my family didn't do this to me. My grandma noticed I liked strategy games and bought me some absolute shovelware that she found godknowswhere. My based grandpa bought one of those famiclone 76000 games in one (it had like 50 games or something) that that Israeli guy got busted for. I say he was based because even though the controllers were shit, they did work, the light gun games worked and I got to play lots of retro games I otherwise wouldn't have experienced as nobody else I knew had anything older than 5th gen consoles.
>>
When did you stop getting things for christmas?
For me it was when I was 14, but it was more so because my family became poor and fractured after the 2008 crash and the drug habit my parents developed after, rather than me "aging out".
I was mature enough to understand the situation I was now in and not getting anything, but it did still sting at the time.

goddamn, same here
I was 12 in 2009 my dad had his credit card linked to my account whenever I needed to renew my gold membership, one day I went to see if I could buy anything with it and I spent $100 of my dad's money on DLC map packs, arcade games and other shit, and then I got a notification saying that there was "insufficient funds"
I was a greedy dumbass, I remember asking my dad the same day later on "dad when do you get paid?"
a day later he found out and he gave me a stern talking about how credit cards work and stuff like that, I legitimately thought I was using consequence free money
I bought the saints row 2 DLCs, trials HD, cod waw map pack 3 and played der riese like crazy, so it was a fun lesson to learn

I had a similar situation
it happened around 1999, maybe 2000. grandma gave me a $20 bill in the morning as a gift then went to work. I took the bill outside to play with the neighbors kids and I decided to just give it to them for free. I remember saying "it's ok I can get more in the evening" thinking I'll just ask grandma for $100 because lol its just paper
mom ended up finding out and I was forced to go alone to the neighbors house, I laid down on the ground in front of their door and waited for hours. eventually one of the kids parents came out and I stammered out why I'm there. ended up getting it back but that was the day I learned that money has value and grandma doesn't have infinite amounts of it
kids sure are dumb

Not really. Parents/grandparents should give proper gifts, but for uncles/aunts or extended family money is good because it skips them trying to guess (incorrectly) what the kid will like and the kid having to fake being happy after getting some shitty gift.

You are romanticized the past to the point it becomes a detriment that hinders you from actually focusing on the present now and here and slowly but surely erodes and sense of hope for the future you might come to have. You should be using past memories as a way to grow in wisdom, experience and other things, but instead, you are using it as a form of escapism by constantly just thinking back to your personally perceived "good times" and then get that feeling of how you want to "return home" because you have no actual home since your soul is empty and devoid of the presence of God, which you're suppose to have, and is the only thing that can feel that empty, gaping hole inside of you-- but you don't have it, nor do you wish to seek it, so instead you try and fin it literally anywhere else but in God.

If you're really that desperate for it, just have children of your own and then you can actually "be a child" again when you get to play with them and just let go of things for a few hours, lol.

Regardless, the better way to go about it is to just come to Christ. You're stuck in a perpetual state of misery and bitterness with no way out or end in sight and you think that fantasizing about the past is someone going to help you when it does nothing but make things worse for you in the end. Instead of moving out, you remain stuck in the past and in yours ways.

The only one who can get you out of the impasse you've dug yourself into is Jesus alone. You will not be able to move on or improve at all in any way without His help. You need to seek out Jesus and invite Him in your heart, so that He may guide you out of darkness you have allowed yourself to wallow in for eternity.

Thing will not "get better" until He returns. In fact, they will only keep on getting worse and worse, but to those who have accepted Him may have peace and joy in knowing and having Him near them. But to those who continue to reject Him, you will ultimately be lost.

First I can remember was probably Pokemon Gold in 2001 and it came with a Gameboy Color as well I think. My mum probably got presents for me and my brothers before but I was too young to notice so this was the first time I can vividly remember it.

I still remember one very odd memory where I played it for maybe 20 minutes and then put it down to go do something else, went into the living room and asked my brother where he was in Silver and he told me he's "lost in a forest somewhere" and it made me think he was wayyyyy ahead of me only to find out he's just in Route 29 and then I happily told him "Ah, you're in the same place I am!"

Weird how the mind works, I just remember that super well but nothing else about that day.

My mum was the entire reason I had presents for Christmas, she somehow got stuff for me and my two brothers every year without fail despite staying at home all day and my dad being fucking useless otherwise. He wouldn't even give her money for the presents and she instead had to save up whatever she could usually government benefits for child care but every year we woke up to tons of presents.

She told me many stories over the years relating to vidya she bought. One time she wanted to buy a console for us back in 96 but didn't know if the Mega Drive or SNES was better so she asked a guy on the counter only for him and another worker to start bickering over which console was better. After around 20 minutes of trying to convince her to get one over the other she chose to get both and the best part was my dad saw that we had two game consoles and thought "one is enough" and decided to take the SNES as a present to my cousin instead.

Another time she pretended to be from the newspaper to get a "review copy" of a Wii from a store back when it released in 2006. They believed her instantly for some reason and allowed her to purchase it for a discounted price as well.

The only sad part was that she wasted a lot of money on buying three copies of the same game for us so we wouldn't have to share. I can understand why but it's a shame she didn't just decide on buying as much games as she could from the magazines. Still, she kept up to date with as many games as she could, even getting Pokémon Red/Blue day one since she heard it was a big game in America on the radio before it came over to the UK.

Probably my earliest memory was when I was around 4 and my dad buried a small box with a power ranger toy and a handmade parachute for it in his vegetable garden. He told me the badger who lived near the garden had left me a gift (there really was a badger there) and told me to dig for it. It was insanely cool for my child brain.

>A few weeks later, my parents leave my with my grandparents for the day while they go to the next city over to do some shopping.
>My parents arrive to pick me up but not before having some coffee first
>Dad casually asks me to grab him his smokes from his jacket pocket that he left in the other room
>Go to get it, notice large rectangular box while groping around the pockets for a pack of cigarettes
>Pull it out and it's a PS2 game
>It's GTA 3
>It's not Vice City but I'm still overjoyed, bouncing around and going apeshit
>Little me even thinks that the game has both Liberty City AND Vice City as I'm reading the instruction manual
>Disappointed it didn't, still loved the game and played the hell out of it
>Ended up getting Vice City for Christmas
Still one of my go-to memories for when I wanna try and re-experience that childhood wonder again.

Every year and general holiday my parents always made sure we knew we didn't deserve to celebrate and how ungrateful I was. Once I did finally accept is when my parents switch and now they get all upset when I don't participate in Christmas and holidays. Specially this year after my like got nuked I'm not celebrating this holiday ever again and I'm not putting up with their bullshit. Always seems to be the same with my life. I want something and work my ass off to never get it. Then when I accept defeat and no longer want it, that's when it comes to me, which since I don't want it anymore I still don't get it.

I'm baffled by these child abuse stories. The few times I was unfairly treated (dad tried to break my arms when drunk once, at age 7; age 10, he pushed me down and kicked me a few times), I took a knife to my parents while they were sleeping then threatened to burn the house down. They shut the fuck up after that. You were 10 anon, certainly big enough to wield a knife or heavy book and sneak up on your aunt. Worst case scenario you get sent to a hospital for evaluation and meds a few weeks too. Kids can get away with anything. And where were your mom and grandparents? If they actually loved you, they wouldn't have let your aunt do that. Negligence is just as deserving of slicey dicey.

There are people with Down syndrome that function better than you. This is all self imposed. You deserve the situation you’re in then.

same, and I wasn't abused like all these people.
I'm guessing adulthood sucks if you didn't put in the work growing up to get a cushy job. I was busting my ass in school and wasn't able to enjoy it like one big vacation

my grandma would give the same or equal tier gifts to all my siblings and cousins, then afterwards quietly call me to her room and open up her cash drawer and give me a crisp $100 bill, i had no problem keeping quiet, helped me to become good at keeping people's secrets as an adult and my friends see as trustworthy, miss her so much
>>
>>729235887
Nobody could stop her. She'd yell at my mu and talk her down whenever she said anything, and it'd make her launch into an hour-long lecture about video games. My grandparents were mostly unaware, and I was too naive to think that I could stand up for myself.

>>729236076
It just doesn't work like that sometimes. I've never been a violent person, and the thought of threatening her back, let alone with a fucking KNIFE, never occured to me, even when I was copping daily physical abuse. It happens because nobody stops them, I guess.

My parents knew I liked video games and computer related things when I was a kid, I was really open about my interests.
Every Christmas/Birthday was still "We have no idea what you like so here are clothes and maybe 50 dollars" anyways and a guilt trip about making the holidays so hard for them because I never told them what I wanted (I did) or even what I currently liked (I did).
Looking back I think they didn't register my interests because they didn't want to spend the money on new games.

If anything video games are a way to keep children off the streets and getting into trouble with the wrong crowds.
