how come despite the massive improvements in engine use, programming and such things games take way more time to make now than it did 15/20 years ago when all of this was way harder to use?why do people let this slide and even encourage this despite not making any significant difference in a game's quality?

>>729218543Back then you could graphically design several entire levels, characters, animations, and special graphical effects in a few weeks. Now it takes over a month just to get one wall texture right. All in the name of realism.
From 1997 to 2001 Square released Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10. Four of their biggest and highly rated games within 5 years. Now it takes 10 years to make a single game that's absolute garbage. How did they do it back then?
Back then if you wanted to make grass in an rpg all you had to do was make like 5 dots and you were done
>>729218543Game developers back then were computer engineers. Video game developers nowadays are troons with art degree.
>>729218543Early 00s was still a time where many games had fixed camera angles which heavily reduces development costs. These days every town needs to be fully modeled cause of free camera control given to the player. At the same time, because of the increase in resolution, these models have to also look really good. Suddenly things become much more complicated. If you ask me, more devs should embrace lower scoped games or just keep making 2D games. Like Nintendo did with Mario and Zelda.
>>729223294don't we have thousands of assets to rely on to reduce time spent on things like this?i know they get samey (hence all the complaints about assets) but devs could just use more varied, alternative asset packs or have said asset producers make more of those
