Why do boomer games that are over a decade old look ten times better with Ray Tracing than current gen games that are shilled as the best looking shit ever, like Cyber Punk, Alan Wake 2, and the RE remakes?

hand crafted textures do all the heavy lifting in those old games and the lighting is just a cherry on top. in modern games most textures are procedural mush that rely on lighting to look good

>>729219413>Procedural mush Partially incorrect, partially correct. Textures in, say, cyberpunk are generally extremely realistic even without lighting. The issue is YOU DONT WANT REALISTIC TEXTURES if you want the game to look good. You dont look things from 10cm away when playing, so all the realistic details wont get noticed. Hence the textures look "flat" and need lighting to highlight things. Old games exaggerate things they want to highlight because resolution/lighting limitations, so things pop out more. As a result you subconsciously pick up more of those details. Its funny that traditional artists have largely abandoned photorealism for this very reason, but gaming industry still pushes for photorealism (plus of course the overtly reflective surfaces to have at least some shiny highlights pop up).
