I had the same question. I'd say play Yakuza 4 because it's kinda good and short and it has some memorable scenes and the characters are great Yakuza 5 I couldn't finish. I'd say play only the Kiryu part in the beginning and watch a summary on youtube after that. Fucking boring game. Then play Yakuza 6 since it's a good game, the story kinda dropped by the end but it's good enough; Then jump straight to Gaiden, the real Yakuza 7 and the best game since Yakuza 2.

Akiyama is a major part of Kiryu's life on par with Date.
Saejima is a major part of Majima's life.
6 literally starts with 5's ending as the intro.
7G entirely relies on you having played 5, 6, and 7 because the entire ending of 7G is part of 7.
8 relies on you having played 7 and every single game prior to that bare minimum since it's a Kiryu-focused game.
