Kamikaze attacks damaged hundreds of ships and sank over 45. For 3000 pilots and planes that's actually a very good trade. Each of those ships had hundreds of crew as well and takes much longer to replace. To get the same result with conventional attacks is going to result in casualities as well, maybe even much higher casualties. The US navy was screening their fleets with tons of AA cruisers that made this very difficult.
