The bugs in sword of the stars. Unlike all the other races they can't do ftl travel so they have to slowly fly to new systems at sublight speeds, but once they get there they can set up portals for instant travel

I like Star Trek like "warp" drive for the aesthetic, but using jump gates for a fast travel mechanic is a strong contender as well.
I've always liked the EVE Online hybrid method, warp speed for in-system travel with jump gates between each system.
It always felt right to me. Like a ship can move itself faster than light, but you need static, dedicated platforms to move to the next system. It's a cool implementation.
