The dramatic improvement in graphics brought about by the 6th gen allowed devs to flex their muscles with new effects such as water, advanced lighting, and physics sims. But at the same time it was all done in an era before the generic photorealistic look took over, and locales still had to be interpreted by an artist first and foremost, which resulted in a lot of iconic, wholesome beach levels. As games began chasing realism, we lost that magic. Now, everything aims to look as close to real life as possible and that dreamlike, slightly exaggerated charm has faded away.

In those games, you can see a mixture of tech and genuine love for the planet with hopes for the future. We will never see such optimism again.
>>
If games started doing this today you would get to video game beach #3 and start saying "great, more beachslop"
>>

If games started doing this today they would all look the same with the same exact photoslop beach. So that would be beachslop.

>before the generic photorealistic look took
Max Payne came out in 2001. It's photorealistic because they used photos for their textures.

it's not even remotely photorealistic

to be fair, unreal 5 would add that soulless trademark faded colorless lifeless filter all over them.
they would all indeed look like identical beachslop
gen 6 was a rare time where all consoles were still completely different from each other architecturally, and devs usually created their own engines in house
every beach and every water was unique
>>
>>729243582
>dumb zoomer doesn't know games all used to look different and unique

Very rarely are devs and companies truly excited to share what they've been working on out of joy for it.
>but it's an industry to make money!
Yes. You can have both.
>>
>>729243582
Nah. Designers, artists, and programmers were actually talented back then and making games they actually wanted to play.

I think the origin of "1990s/2000s beaches" was just from how prevalent and popular Japanese games were. Japan is an island, of course japanese people would overrepresent tropical and subtropical beaches.
