I literally don't understand how the fuck people live without ray tracing

Yup, raytracing is big league good. Loois even better in motion
>>
>>729244831
you just play the game
it's a video game
it doesn't matter
>>
So what was stopping the devs from doing SSR for the floor in the RT Off version, and baking the lighting for that area given the lights will be lighting it up all day round?
>>
>it’s called NIGHT City
>retards want it to be as illuminated as possible
Giving third worlders with no sense of the arts access to technology was a mistake.
>>
>>729244831
>raytracing off: scene is dark, proper atmosphere
>raytracing on: the scene is FIVE TIMES BRIGHTER with RAINBOW PRETTY COLORS. atmosphere ruined
>>
>>729244831
>I literally don't understand
Yeah you don't. There are other methods to calculate bounce light. RTX is mostly just Nvidia trying to establish GPU monopoly by pushing proprietary tech.
>>
>>729244831
>>729245198
This is the equivalent of motion controls, 3D gaming/TVs and mobile gaming. This is a fad, a dying trend. This shit will be forgotten feature within 3 years.
>>
>>729245198
is this a joke? the left looks objectively better here
>the scene: a dull, dark, wet, and foggy day
>RT off: properly conveys an atmosphere that fits the scene
>RT on: "SATURATED COLORS AND FLASHING LIGHTS AND REFLECTIONS AND WE TURNED UP THE BRIGHTNESS AND AND AND-"
you have the mentality of a child.

Raytracing is just the new BLOOM.
>>
>>729247451
I wonder how this trend took off? AFAIK plenty of the people like it... ?
>>
you're all retarded niggers
>>
>>729244831
It's honestly pretty good. Instead of getting a card that can run raytracing well, I have extra money for real life fun.
I like gaming, I can't justify a raytracing card yet.

Also looking at the OP pic it just means I get to enjoy my games again and appreciate them in a new light.
>>
>>729245124
Christmas is tomorrow, retard.
>>
>>729247040
You wish, it's now going to be a mandatory mainstay so you move onto streaming your games
>>
>nvidia makes proprietary hardware for RT and the best upscaler to support it
>hard pivots to AI
>abandons the consumer market
it really was a fad
>>
>>729244831
the left is more realistic.
lights in real life are not that bright that they reflect that much, its always overdone in video games and raytracing makes it even worse.
>>
>>729247530
people used to like bloom too.

RTX looks a thousand times worse in your pic

Looks unrealistic. RTX off is what everyone wants.
>>
it looks nice but i shan't be paying the performance tip + tax + tithe + donation + tariff + interest sorry

>>729247729
Nobody plays mobile games so they virtually all got delisted, why would streaming services be any different.
>>
Ray Tracing is the most Reddit graphics setting. Doesn't have any substantial effect on gameplay and is purely for nerds to post "LOOK AT MY HECKIN POWERFUL RIG RENDERING THESE REFLECTIONS ON THE GROUND" for upboats. People who aren't severely mentally ill don't sit and stare at a puddle for hours.
>>
>>729244831
what is the difference of ray tracing to path tracing?
>>
>>729244831
Graphics don't make a game good.
>>
>>729248179
Ray tracing is where you rasterize the geometry and textures and ray trace the lighting, then combine the two
Path tracing is where the entire scene is drawn using ray tracing
>>
>bro it's not realistic

note how the road, still, doesnt look like a mirror. the only meaningful reflections are lights, and even then they're so distorted that you can't draw any meaning from them.
>>
>>729248592
i think i understand
>>
>>729244831
unironically, left looks visually better, one thing that bothers me is that these ray/path tracing whatever make things way too much reflective, as if everything is made of some polished metal or something and it looks very uncanny, it's much more appealing when there's a balance between reflective and matte surfaces like in the left pic, looks more natural

WET
FLOOOOORS
>>

it's more enjoyable

The thing is, cities are visually offensive. You can't make artificial lights look good because they are an affront to nature.
>look how nice this prison looks
No fuck off.
>>
>>729250493
i'm now imagining a storyline where your buddy is in a gunfight and if you have raytracing on he can't see shit and gets shot, but if you have raytracing off he easily shoots the other guy first because he can see more clearly.

Ray tracing is when you launch 1 ray per pixel straight forward (say, a table), and then, for each light in the scene, launch another ray from this point to check if the table is illuminated by this light particular.

It handles light, secondary reflections, and straight shadows relatively well. It's not hard to do as a render engine. We can ray trace video games real time since 8 years ago? It's roughly (1 + n*lights) rays per pixel.

Ray tracing in the vague Nvidia marketing means something a little bit more complicated, which is photon mapping and the like. But very basically, makes some rays impact some textures and the like. It's a bit of a monstrous, frankeistein tech with the traditional raster pipeline, but it works.

Path tracing is a total rework and a discard of the raster pipeline. Instead of sending 1 ray per pixel (+ rays for each lights) you send 3000+ rays per pixel. Which bounces off randomly. The idea is that it's exactly like real life: every "pixel" in your eyes are really the average of millions of rays. But then you need a ton of rays per pixel to average.

Path tracing's issue is that it's both elegant, real life accurate, and stupidly expensive. So you need to use AI to create frames and to push up the resolution if you want anything like to that to work a 24 FPS, 1024p, on a 5090. But yeah, it's basically the holy grail. In graphics. And what's used in offline rendering.
