I dropped Nioh 1 hour into it not because it was harder, but because it was extremely janky and didn't feel good to play. Dark Souls really spoils you with how smooth and optimized the controls are. As an analogy Dark Souls is to Nioh what WoW is to FFXIV in terms of controls and jankiness

Both Nioh games (no clue where 3 stands) start out harder than a lot of Soulslikes, but Nioh leans a lot harder on RPG stuff and all the shit you can unlock, so after beating a couple stages, the games get a ton easier outside of a couple difficulty spikes.
I mean hell, it's one of the very few soulslike franchises out there where it's perfectly viable to be a legit tank and just facetank bosses with no effort until you start stacking NG+ and it devolves into naked rolling everywhere.

Another thing is that you end up unlocking so many moves and options that even outside of the RPG stuff, you can legitimately git gud and play it more like an action game, especially in Nioh 2.

The fact that the AI is putting on kiddie-gloves when telling you that it's "generally considered harder and more complex" is funny. It's a complete understatement. It feels like half the enemies in any given level are like running into the black knight in undead burg. Complexity is way higher in Nioh so it's not even comparable anymore.
The main issue with Nioh (and this persists in Nioh2) is that every "optional" level is literally just the same level you just played but either backwards or reduxed. So like 60% of the game's content is recycled.

I've cleared the depths in Nioh 2 and never swapped out of high stance tonfa. Ki pulsing also became just a way to instantly cancel recovery animations to continue attacking instead of a way to regain ki.

I used dual swords for Nioh 1, and only swapped stance to use windstorm to guarantee yokai horn breaks.

In 2 I'd have elemental tonfas (preferably purity), and then throw out kasha whenever I got the anima to. That pretty much kept confusion on bosses permanently. I focused mostly on ki break and spamming shove, so the instant a boss went down, they basically got looped to death because I'd break them again before they could get out of their ki recovery animations like realm switching. The only boss that really ever posed a threat was late depths chaos bringer because of the elemental immunities.

Combat is a lot better than in the Souls series, but level design is worse.
If you play it like a Souls game (roll + R1/R2) it is going to be harder, if you use the game's mechanics you can really style on your enemies though.
Diablo tier itemization is also something different, so be aware of that.

I replayed CV last year and it wasn’t as bad as I remembered it but it was still bad. I get what they were going for but Bamco anime games have always suffered from dog shit level design. Scarlet Nexus had this problem too and I imagine CV 2 won’t be much better.
