Let's try to be nice to each other this time. What JRPGs did you pick up for Christmas?
Reminder to play Wind I's game.
Never got Fire Emblem but I'm tempting to bite. Which FE game should I get from the Switch store?
>>729252591What slop are we jarpiggies slurping in this thread?
>>729252674>Subier but as a fat fuckInteresting...
>>729252591The only jarpigs I've played all the way through were a couple of the turn based Final Fantasy games, what would /v/ recommend if I enjoy those? Preferably with good gear progression and a little grindy.
Might get sora 3rd but haven't finished 2c yet. But it seems like 3rd doesn't go on sale as often as the others
>>729252674I'll get to it eventuallyI just have to get through Secret of Varonis, and Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fantasian, and Trails of Cold Steel 3, 4 and Reverie, and some more runs of Emerald Beyond, and Octopath 2, and Xenosaga 1~3 and Wooden Ocean first
>>729253003>what would /v/ recommend if I enjoy those? The greatest JRPG ever made
>>729252721Switch specifically is not where I would start for the series. I honestly recommend emulating sacred stones first. The switch entries as such huge departures from the base DNA of the series that it won't give you a proper idea of the appeal.
>>729253285secret of varonis is really shorti still need to finish my fixed-encounter mode playthroughquaint little medley of saga 1-3 though
Thoughts on SaGa 2 remake (OG SaGa, not Romancing SaGa) on the DS? Is that the superior version?
>>729253661I'm at Gamma World, feels like I'm getting close to the end. Aside from all the switch-flipping at Ares' Castle it's been a pretty good time, I particularly like how consistently useful my monster has been.
>>729253978yeah it's actually pretty well-balanced, not that monsters were at all slouches in saga 1, but in varonis they don't take anywhere near as much arcane knowledge/experimentation in order to be effective
>>729253815Its fun but if you engage with any of the new mechanics (the Threads system specifically) prepare for a fucking retarded ass final boss. The Saga 3 ds remake is really fucking good too btw.
>>729253815It's good, though some people dislike Kobayashi's redesigns and there's mixed opinions about the new soundtrack. As far as content goes, it's the same game with the addition of the Muses, an optional battle arena with powered up bosses and a little extra at the end if you use the new systems, there's no changes in progression outside of that.Mechanics wise the remake has some major rebalances due to the introduction of the Threads of Fate system, which is a combo system that runs through limited consumables and gives every weapon a unique combo attack, there's also some light positional elements now as enemy groups are now separated in distinct separate groups, but it's a minor technicality to spice up combat a little bit. There's enemy icons now like the Romancing games and the MAGI system has been greatly expanded so each MAGI now gives you a variety of tools rather that just stat buffs. There's a Benediction system like Minstrel Song where each Muse can give you a Benediction during battles if you satisfy certain conditions, there's also some pseudo-dating mechanics where you can give them gifts and do specific things in fights to raise their affection and make benedictions more likely, you also need to satisfy their battle conditions to buy Threads of Fate from them so it all flows together rather nicely.Threads of Fate also alter your party's dialogues and how each character behaves according to which threads you use during combos which is a nice touch, and of course if you use these systems you also unlock a bullshit hard version of the final boss that will kick your ass.Imo it's the closest thing to a direct upgrade you can get, the SaGa 3 remake is great too if you're interested.
>>729252591Touhou Labyrinth 2. Some anon recommended it to me again after i dropped the cracked version a year ago and now i bought it because its ridiculously good.
I picked up Varlet, Monark and Reynatis
>JRPGNope. Shit term.
>>729255557for me, it's artificial dream in arcadia
>>729256304>artificial gameplay in arcadiatouhou sloppers have even worse standards than coomer slop gamers.
>>729256632sorry you got filtered
I have been playing ff12 for the season. Any anons have any tips or party build recs?
>>729253003What Final Fantasy games did you like best, SNES or PS1? Just pick shit from whatever console is your answer although I can give you some if you're more specific. Honestly it's harder to name ones that are shit than not shit
>>729256632Everytime someone says slop an angel gets its wings
>>729256304>artificial dream in arkinoAbsolute gem. Thankfully since I've never even touched an actual touhou game I'm immune to the violent, visceral reaction 2hu fans seem have towards Zoomiereko
I have plenty of JRPGs in my backlog despite beating a lot of games these past few years. I promised myself to not buy anymore games until I beat almost all my games. I hate my job and I'm considering resigning from that job and spending more time on hobbies, and especially on video games until I feel good enough to look for another job.
What am i in for lads?
>>729256304i tried that aswell but i cant stand smt combat anymore. I think for oldschool smt bros its a dream come true. So is 2hu lab for us old starving etrian bros. I dont know anything 2hu but these games are great.
>>729257386Shitty platforming bolted onto a wannabe FF5 clone that fails to understand what makes FF5 fun in the first place, and with nothing remotely resembling a story to reel you back once the game starts losing you.
>>729257153Cute post
>>729257264i'm the inverse of 2hufags, i hate everything that ISN'T reiiden, especially winblows 2hu because they don't even have mima (and reimu's redesign sucks ass)however artificial dream in arcadia DOES have mima, so it's automatically ludokino
>>729257386dropped it after a few hours because i was bored out of my mind but there are quite a few people who really like it so maybe i just didnt get it (doubt it)
>>729257469>>729257978B-but all the shilling! Game good guys!
>>729252591I am picking up the ryza trilogy dx
Just finished Metaphor a few days ago and im looking for a new one. Preferably with better pacing though.I hated having to sit through 3+ hours of cutscenes every time i finished a main dungeon
>>729258264>Not waiting for a sale
>>729252591Did Kefka let the party kill him because he was bored? Were Terra and Celes plapped by soldiers?
>>729253003Mana Khemia.>>729258287If you want very little filler and short scenarios I recommend SaGa Frontier.
>>729258287Get on Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden
It was really nice to revisit my town and do some of the DLC runs, but the DLC seems more of something I'll play occasionally and not constantly like the base game.Back to Suikoden 5 as soon as work is done
>>729252591>What JRPGs did you pick up for Christmas?I bought the Lunar collection just now. I'll play it after I finish Tactics Ogre, Swordhaven and maybe Tainted Grail.
>>729258671nta but i never played it but i really like mega man sprite game
>>729252591Hundred Line, if that counts. Steam died during download though.
>>729259732Why? That game sucks.
>>729252591I finished FFV last night. Probably gonna take a break before I go on to VI. Probably gonna do Genealogy of the Holy War and then go FFVI.
>>729259838Because I want to play it...?
>>7292598936 is a lot different than 5 and much better, but stopping to play a different genre is usually a good idea anyways
>>729260098nta but i would refund it immediately. what a stupid nonsense waste of time.
>>729260291Agreed, if my favorite influencer Kiseki Nut didn't like it, it must be shit.
>>729260740>when the zoomer tries to be ironic but nobody knows what the fuck the moron is talking abouttough break
>>729260740i "played" it all. have fun wasting 80-100h to come to the same conclusion. havent seen one anon who had a good time and wasnt disappointed.
>>729257264All I know is that in owen was her is catchy as hell and there is a touhpunwith elephant foot
>>729260968Although I think people should try stuff out themselves and that some people in the threads when it came out appeared to enjoy the game, I will second that I also played it and didn't like it. I stopped pretty early in and was fucked because I was far past the refund window. The idea that everyone has to like every game is absurd. Uchikoshi humor is just not for me.
can someone rec me a 80+hr jrpg like octopath 0 but that doesnt have shitty writing and awful english voice acting like octopath 0
>>729252721I kinda agree with the other anon that it may be a good idea to emulate a GBA game, either Sacred Stones or Fire Emblem (the first game released in the West so they included a nice tutorial in it). But if you want a Switch game, you should check out Three Houses, that introduced a ton of people into FE, it's got a solid story and good characters, there is a unique teaching element to it that isn't in other FE games, but it might click with you. Either way, unless the look of Engage really appeals to you, avoid that one, it's a love letter to the entire series, and a lot of people dislike the direction they went in with it, but it is solid gameplay wise. Hope you have fun, I love FE.
>>729261404>I bought it off a keysite because it was 30% off so I couldn't refund ithaha they got me too
>>729252591>$45Worth it? Or hold out for a better sale?
>>729261404ff12 blindalso use jap dub for octopath. octopath 2 jap dub was godlike.if you played ff12 play dqm 1 and 2 remake for 3ds if you like monsters.
>>729261404Dragon Quest 11. Not many fit the criteria desu.
>>729252591Tales of Grace f(halfway through it) and chained echoes, would have finish tales by now, but I brought lies of p on this sale and have been playing that instead, I will come back around it, someday…
>>729261662Nta but I just started FF12 blind. Having more fun than I expected. So there's no real missables to worry about by going in blind? Also should I mostly avoid the trial mode until after beating the main game? I don't want to make the game too easy.
>>729261626you will probably have to wait 2+ years for a good sale, but also I recommend you wait 2+ years for both a good sale and for them to remake the rest of TitS. Waiting between each title was kinda a bitch the first time around and will probably be even worse with modern devtimes - the game is filled with little details like town NPCs that have their own stories that develop over the course of the entire series, and you forget a lot of those details waiting years between each release. Its much better to play the trilogy all at once.
>>729261404Skies of Arcadia
>>729261404emulate XCX DEit runs on toasters and I played that fucker for like 120 hours
What JRPG has the cutest and funniest party members?
>>729261839With that being said should I just get the original trilogy to prime myself for the remake or is there no point?
>>729261927based, my jrpg of this year
Merry Christmas jrpg thread anon. Got some gifts for myself and Yakuza 0 can roughly be counted as jrpg I guess
Finished SO6: Divine Force yesterdayabsolute kino, gonna start my 2nd run with Letecia tomorrowalso im gonna need to dig deep into the crafting mechanics, seems very autistic in a good way
>>729252591>FE slopWhat kind of fucking chart is this? FE is niche garbage. I would expect Persona or Kingdom Hearts, not fucking FE.
>>729261832There is a big missable in the original version thats not missable in the Zodiac edition. It depends on which one you are playing.
>>729261551I paid full price, it is what it is, just a bummer it had to turn out bad. i still spent 83 hrs to 100% it because playing game is just a way to pass the time for me at this point.>>729261662played the zodiac age a couple of years ago after having played the original on launch, I really enjoy ff12, not many people seem to. if push comes to shove I'll just play Octopath 2 I guess, I'll have to push through the first 8 hours of character intros. DQM is also kind of a possibility, I still have my cfw 3DS still plugged in these days.>>729261741i like dq11 a lot but havent played the S version, wondering if its worth it to buy it again on steam for 19.99>>729261869maybe I should, never played it>>729261927I enjoy the game but already finished it on Wii U
>>729261832>So there's no real missables to worry about by going in blind? The game has so many missables that you already lost access to over a dozen of them and you will never even know they exist. The line between 'missable' and 'secret easter egg' is stretched thin in FF12. I agree with that anon that you should absolutely play it blind because trying to play FF12 optimally only leads to madness. With a third party RNG calculator it can take hours to get multiple one-time chests in the same room to roll the 1% rare drop for their unique items, without the calculator it can take days. It is much better to just play blind and think that there were two small chests in that hallway and one had a hi-potion while the other had a knot of rust.
>>729262039Merry Christmas! I got myself a rice cooker along with a bunch of JRPGs on sale.>>729262102I couldn't play it on my Steam Deck to save my life with how small the text size is.
>>729261404Ys8?is more of a adventure game
I feel it in my heart that I can trust herEveryone deserves second chances
>>729261626tits1 remake was my first introduction to the tits series and I will say it was mid and that's likely because I'm a 40 year old man and not a teenaged girl which is the audience the game seems like it was written for.
>>729262182I don't think it runs good on the Deck, i have a good PC and still get dips under 60FPS all the time.
>>729262021Same, actually. E33 was really great, but damn XCX hit the spot. The closest I'll get to the Phantasy Star feeling ever again, probably.
>>729261206>>729260968I had a very good time the first 150 hours of it or whatever. The problem is it never fucking delivers in the end. There's no real point to 99% of the content and literally dozens, if not hundreds, of unexplained plot points/ devices that are mentioned once then never brought up again.I didn't even mind the filler, I think with the exception of like 2 or 3 routes it was all more or less fine, but it having no real ending that wraps anything up is a real fucking waste of potential that soured me on the whole game and made be kinda hate most of it retroactively.
>>729262258yeah 100% it, the last good nu-ys imo because I disliked 9 and hated 10
is Ys X any good? its 13€ on key sites
>>729262348Recompiling shaders a couple times helps
>>729261626It will obviously go on steeper discounts later, but if it's too much for you right now, you can either wait or get the original for like 10 bucks.
>>729262102SO6 is pure kino, and Ray is great protag. My only complaint with the game is how badly they fucked up the concept art with the 3D models
>>729262403Was 9 really that bad? I heard it excelled in combat and characters.
>>729262168ff12 is a kamigeinsanely underrated>still have my cfw 3DS best way to play the translations. it works on emulator but only on a specific version thats ancient because they changed some kernel thing that fucked up these 2 games and never fixed it and im too lazy to check.
>>729261206man, i didn’t even finish the first loop on that game, got bored to dead by the day 70, maybe now that I have steamdesk should try it again.
>>729262456the small heads a doll-like characters really make the game look silly, but i got used to it in like 2-3h
>>729262168>maybe I should, never played itWord of advice before you do: while the Gamecube version has more content than the Dreamcast version, it is also tarnished by scuffed music. My personal recommendation is that you play the DC version, because that is still a complete game.
>>729262482not that anon, but i liked the combat and characters more than 8 but everything else is fucking worse, the music could be Ai generated and i will have believed 100%
>>729262526Yeah, same.
>>729262426>39$you lie to me!
>>729262660https://www.loaded.com/ys-x-nordics-pc-steamwelp, i looked yesterday and it was in stock and was like 13.49€, and now its not in stock anymore... i hope they restocknow im mad that i didn't buy it
>Crystal Project>gender changes statschud game
>>729262718its nuts to me that they are reselling the game on February and not making a cheap discount on the old version, even after 1 years of release.
>>729252591What are your guys's favorite JRPG parties/casts?
>>729262381I think its especially bad because the dev went 'if the game doesnt sell we are out of business - i gave it my all' and then we got this fucking mystery shit without resolution
>>729262426it's made on a shoe-string budget and not in a soulful way either, it's like it was made by a bunch of people who don't understand how to make a video game at all; it was honestly so bad, filled with TONS of shitty cutscenes, mind you im the kind of guy that rarely if ever skips things but I legitimately started skipping EVERY single cutscene a couple of hours in and there was a lot. sometimes I would allow to go for a few seconds out of curiosity before skipping. their insistence on turning Ys into some story heavy game instead of a simple set forth on adventure game is a huge fucking mistake on their part.
I have SO6 and it has run like ass every time I haven't recompiled the shaders after launch.

>>729262941Vagrant Story cast wise
>>729263035Take prelude to the fallen for example
>>729263065I played the demo and the weapons not changing their visual look when you replaced them was a red flag alredy.
>>729263117same happen with the xanadu ex+, it was at 5$ for years and now it doesn’t go below 15$ anymore
>>729263060nvm
>>729255646I actually like Reynatis. The combat is a little floaty but pretty close to Kingdom Hearts in a way. The defense mechanic gives it a sort of rhythm. I suggest don't play it like an action game. Switch to your defensive mode and let the enemy attack you.
>>729263215Shan't touch Xanadu either. I'm not going to encourage bad behavior with my wallet.

I'm not worried about playing optimally, more looking to have fun. These are mostly based on the little info I've heard about the characters, but maybe my opinion will change when I play the game more.

>>729265228SO4's gameplay was a fairly significant step down from 3's and the game overall so universally hated it all but killed the franchise. It's easily the worst game in the series. By like a long shot. You can be nostalgic for it and enjoy the game, that's all right, but calling it anywhere even remotely close to a good SO game is fucked.

>>729266167I watched a bit of a playthrough of Tales of Phantasia, the first one, and I was surprised at how dark the plot got right from the beginning, and it's handled well.

I've been enjoying Octopath Traveler 0.
>>729266015Arise is literally hire this man tier "what if we made a tales of soulslike" where you are better off just spamming the singular double cost strong attack and rollslopping through the rest of the game, after a certain point every regular enemy is a pseudo boss monster where you have to scrape them down to a certain threshold to do the combo attacks with your party (which are otherwise useless against them), and the writing gets inexcusably bad after the halfway point, imagine going from every stupid "slavery bad" "what if mankind are the real monsters" plot point possible to surprise ayylmaos and ntrbait with a "true" villain/rival that is unironically just worse Zenos (or your personal favorite Sephiroth clone with le battle lust) thrown in for good measure

I have so many jrpgs but idk they don't seem to click with me anymore. Currently have queued up SAGA 2 remake, Dq11, Ff7 remake, Chrono Cross, and E33 but haven't really enjoyed the first half dozen hours or so of any of them.Is this just not the genre for me? Is there something I'm missing?
>>729266751>imagine going from every stupid "slavery bad" "what if mankind are the real monsters" plot point possibleMy favorite was the completely sincere "NOOOO YOU CAN'T KILL THE MASS MURDERING VILLAIN BECAUSE YOU WILL LE BE JUST LIKE THEM", which of course is said after you've just slaughtered hundreds of random mooks, which is topped off by the villain being immediately killed by the even bigger badArise's whole plot feels like a shitpost to blend together the most insufferable story beats imaginable

Currently replaying FF8. I plan on replaying wild arms 3 after. FF8 is in need of the remake they gave ff7. 7 has a coherent story and plot moves easily. FF8 suffers from having a setting with incredible potential but bogged down with some ambitious mechanics that make or break the game. Cleaning up the story a bit with some new paint and overworld rework (its alot more deadly then I remember for a game that gives you a vehicle at the start of the game essentially).
>>729268617Yeah it's good
Has anyone played Reverse Collapse? I'm thinking of picking it up ever since one anon put that one webm and it's the most gnarly fucking thing I've seen in a SRPG. Like damn bro, seeing some Berserk style bodies getting sliced in half comes from a cooomer gacha game?

>>729269000One of my favorite games of last 10 years, it's amazing and I usually find SRPGs too slow paced and easy. It's not a gacha game (or a coomer game), and although it's in the GFL universe the plot is mostly standalone, never played GFL and I got everything plus there's an in-game glossary if you get lost. My only cons would be that some of the stealth missions can be frustrating (if you really get filtered by them the devs added secret methods to skip them entirely) and the translation isn't the greatest. Some people also didn't like the ending but that'll be up to you, I thought the story was still really damn good.
>>729267598I think we just grew out of JRPGs. Doesnt help that the golden age of JRPGs are now multiple generations ago. Feels bad man.

>>729252591I've been playing Romancing Saga 2 remake. I like it but it's very much not what I was expecting. It's not that I'm new to SaGa entirely or anything but I guess I wasn't expecting the time skips to happen so fast. I do feel like I'm probably playing sub optimally but haven't had any major trouble a formation change couldn't fix. They really want you to shuffle your emperor.
I keep trying like hell to get into DQ3 HD but I can't get into the making your own party thing

>>729252591What RPGs should I get on Switch 2, wanna load that thing up with them, and want to take advantage of the current sale if there's anything interesting.
>>729270192Normal is plenty difficult already but Challenge is still doable, do NOT play on Challenge+ though since the game is designed for save scumming. As far as difficulty curve goes I'd say it has a massive spike nearly the early middle section, becomes more manageable during the middle section as your characters get more skills and equipment, than picks up rapidly near the end. As far as Challenge difficulty goes if you can get past 2-7 without tearing your hair out you should be fine for the rest of the game
>>729262718>grey marketYou deserve the shit you get.
>>729270534thanks! I'll boot it back up to challenge after the first few maps and see if I wanna kms or not :Dgot any other stealth kino that this thread probably won't give?
>>729253381It's been getting some traction but >>729270801 is another game I found due to random /v/ recommendations that I absolutely adore, it's a slow start and the shitty graphics can be offputting at first but it's a one of one experience
>>729269964All they got to do is replace random battles with a series of setpiece battles until you reach a boss. You can add an optional grinding area for casuals. Games would be much shorter 30 to 40 hours and be a better experiencs
>>729271049I'd prefer to keep random battles but introduce more automation features. Assuming that a game has an encounter table players should be able to program the first 2/3 turns of every given encounter and execute it with one button. Also every modern JRPG that doesn't have a fastforward AND a skip button for combat animations is bad by default.
>>729270073I love that you can make your own party in it, but I hate that Square did the bare minimum possible.>Could have been a full 3d remake with decent character customization. >>729267901Nta but what games are as relaxing as JRPGs? I have carpal tunnel syndrome so I prefer games with turns. But I lose interest in jrpgs quickly these days too
>>729252591Are there any jarpigs where you only control one character? I'll willing to give the genre a go, but I don't like party systems on my RPGs. I play one character only.I don't mind companions as long as I'm not baby sitting them and deciding their every move.

>>729270910I'll take a look thanks! one last question about reverse bakery. did you play on gamepad because this game does not seem to built for it even though it's a jrpg....how in the frick do I save or do anything in the VN sections. LET ME READ the terms damn

>>729271760Lunar collection gives you japanese voices. Lunar 2 is better tgan Lunar 1
>>729270025Generation shifts happen whenever you reach a certain amount of points in a hidden tally, winning battles and completing questline is what awards these points but the calculation is skewed towards the latter, if you played Minstrel Song it's a somewhat similar system to ER, except in there quest completion doesn't matter and the game just counts the number of fights you won.The game's not particularly big on content so if you don't really take your time to snoop around and just focus on completing anything you find you'll get very fast generation shifts, probably in the range of 70-100 years or less because chances are you're not fighting a lot of stuff on the way to your quest objectives, especially in the remake where enemies are extremely easy to avoid.Since the remake changed how BR works and also removed things locked to generation shifts such as researching new spells at the magic center you don't really need to worry about going too fast, just remember that once you get to the last emperor you can't party wipe anymore and if the last emperor loses LPs it's also a game over, mostly, some characters can sacrifice their life to give them an emergency one up on certain conditions.>>729271618Last Ranker, but it's JP only.
>>729271618Threads of fateAlundra 1&2Vagrant storyDark CloudCould try to think of more I'm hazy today
>>729271682What's wrong with executing several planned actions with the push of a button? It's not even new to the genre. I just want it to be more refined and widespread.
>>729271618Dragon Quest 1(One)
>>729271868Most of my skips have been about 50-100 odd years. I've been fighting a decent bit, not really grinding but not avoiding them super strictly either. I was more concerned because I remember you can fuck yourself if the enemies get too strong but it hasn't been an issue. Got like four heroes down and 10 regions.
I'm not too far in FF2, but I'm actually enjoying it so far, including the leveling system. I want to try the SaGa games after, I have the SFC Romancing SaGa 1, 2, and 3 roms, is that the best place to start? Or Final Fantasy Legend?
>>729272207FF2 being a shit has always been a massive meme, games neat as hell for it's time.
>>729272207Play Final Fantasy Legend I and II first. They're short games anyway, clocking in around 10~12 hours each.
>>729253003more Final Fantasy gamesDragon Quest series (inquire in a DQ thread about the best versions of each game) notably you'll enjoy DQ8 and probably DQ5any Squaresoft game on the PS1Phantasy Star 1-4 (3 optional but you should at least try it. Retranslation patches mandatory for 2 and 3)
>>729272307imagine my surprise playing FFV and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but everyone's opinion on it is "lol xD splinter" even though that game probably has the most named character deaths in the entire franchise.
>>729272101It's not really a thing, BR on Classic caps at 13 iirc and you can grind enemies in the Torrid Ruins for a fuckton of EXP regardless of your current and easily overlevel, they also removed the old mechanic of the last boss getting more turns depending on your battle counter so you can grind to your heart's content at any point in the game including the very last generation, this isn't like other SaGa games like Minstrel Song where you want to keep an eye on the fights and grind smartly.>>729272207Avoid SFC RS1, FFL is ancient by today's standards and pretty archaic but if you want to play in chronological order there's no way around it, if you want an easy introduction to a point where the series more or less cemented its identity you might wanna look into RS3 remastered or Frontier remastered, both are good entry points for a beginner and better than the original versions for a long list of reasons.
>>729272207I recommend the PS2 remake of Romancing Saga 1the remasters of 2 and 3, or the remake of 2 are also good
>>729272207for Final Fantasy Legend, if you can into wonderswan emulation play the translated rom of Makaitoushi SaGathere's also colorized patches of all three GB SaGas and the SOVL remains intact

man i asked another thread on this board suggestions for any "roguelike" dnd like games where you pick 3-5 nibbas, explore a procedural generated world with "randomized" quests in a short campaign. and these fuckers recommended me FFT/FFTA. how in the fuck does that make sense?
>>729272307Agreed. I'm looking forward to FFIII too. I used the Origins version for I and II, I recommend them to anyone trying to play them.>>729272476I wish I had Final Fantasy Legend on the Game Boy as a kid. Looks like a great game from what I've seen.

>>729271774Gamepad I think but I don't remember.
>>729273095I rather quite enjoyed six
>>729262039>Captain Toadwhy
>>729273095I think 2, 3, 4 and 6 are all good. 1 is kinda whatever and 5 is laughably bad.3 is my personal favorite, followed by 4 and then 6 maybe. 4 has an insufferable main character after he does The Major Fuckup and a couple side characters have annoying voices but you get to visit 7 different planets and it has the best gameplay. 3 is decent all around outside of the extremely stilted voice acting and barbie doll models but I love the plot and the gameplay, while simple, has some satisfying attacks.6 is an excellent return to form after 5 dropped the ball hard.
>>729271618A lot of JRPGs are turn-based with menu so controlling mulitple character doesn't involve relying on AI.
>>729272706I kinda want to start with Frontier, something about it looks appealing to me, but is it a good intro to SaGa or is it more of it's own thing? And is remastered the way to go or is not much of an improvement over the original?
>>7292730951 and 23 is in a weird spot. It's a good game with a pretty good story but the twist has far reaching implications that technically render everything you did, including in previous games, meaningless
>>729273095Don't listen to>>729273387He's a fucking retard. You can tell someone is either a troll or stupid by how they react to 3's twist.
>>729273384It's fine. Most westerners didn't even know what a saga was at the time. The multiple hero thing was pretty nifty. I really shouldn't have to say this but don't worry about what the best start place is for things, If you think a game looks interesting just play it.
>>729273383I don't care what it involves or how it works, I'm fine with turn based but I control one and only one character. This is my autism and I'm too old to try and change.
>>729273387>has far reaching implications that technically render everything you did, including in previous games, meaninglessNo it doesn't. That's the entire point of the twist and the characters reaction to it you retard. Nothing is invalidated and everything still matters.
>>729273543The turn based ones you control a character at a given turn which might need healing or you attack so it might not work for you since you're still technically "babysitting".
>>729273387Even if you were right, the fact they WILLED the universe back into existence entirely separate of the 4D beings means if it wasn't its own established universe before, it is now, which means your bitching is meaningless.
>>729273543It's just that the classic JRPG loop is completely different from say, a CRPG, it's all about combos with buffing, A attacks X, B attacks Z, C died so you try to revive him while Y is charging a super attack, etc.Typically the games that you play with 1 character are action-focused but that's excluding like 80% of JRPGs, kinda like driving to a MCDonalds and asking for a burger without meat.
>>729273694Then I want games with no companions at all.
>>729262941Overall probably FFV. Amazing cast. Honorable mention goes to Dragon's Dogma because despite being created characters, the pawns are just too damn charming.
>>729262941hard to say because my answer will really change based on my mood or what's in recent memory but if I have to give a solid answer, Lunar 2. the answer is Lunar 2. This is one of the JRPGs that remind me why I like JRPGs.

>>729273082The remake removed everything related to the battle counter and generation shifts, it also simplified the BR so that encounters work like generic JRPGs where every zone has its own list of enemies and it simply buffs their stats rather than giving you new enemies like the original, as long as you are aware that now EXP gain varies by zones you can turn your brain off.>>729273384Mechanically it's the beginning of the modern format and the game that introduced combos into the series, it's also the bridge between the classic SaGa series and the Romancing trilogy, fusing key elements from both.Combined with having low difficulty, iconic main characters and short campaigns it's an ideal entry point for beginners to learn the ropes and get a good idea of how most of the games work at a basic level, just don't start with Riki and you're good to go.>is remastered the way to goAll the remasters are superior to the original versions as they have tons of QoL, better NG+, optional extra handholding for beginners, restored cut content and bugfixes that leave the beloved exploits the original have, the best part is you can also choose to play them without the new additions and get something that is nearly identical in content to the original release.
>>729261759>chained echoesI swear I've heard both very good and very bad things about this game here.
>>729262941Tales of Berseria, Abyss and Persona 3 all have well rounded, well developed characters.I like to judge characters based less on likability and more on the development of their characters, making Persona 3 and Tales of the Abyss the top share. Both games have fleshed out party members who all share importance, both in plot and theme.Berseria more because of likability (though they certainly don't lack for thematic importance either). Even Eleanor who's a stick-in-the-mud straightman character is made better because everyone else is just so out of pocket all the time.
>>729274130interracial cuckholdry across lifetimes is a plot point from what I've heard

>>729273974I don't respect you or your opinion. 3 was a massive improvement in every way over 2.
>>729267817People will tell you to emulate Saturn because the PS1 version doesn't have shadows on buildings, but the Saturn version doesn't have transparency or the "detailed" (as in not blob) shadows on characters outside of combat. In reality no version is perfect and the people who did the remaster are faggots because they promised to combine the best of all versions but they didn't.

>Game lets you name your characters.
>>7292742542R didn't have that problem at all.
>>729274224You're not too old. You just have higher standard because you're older. And turns out that your average jrpg does have both a childish stories and bad writing.
>>729273278Mah nigga. She was my endgame girl
>>729274592If you used to "stomach" it that means you never actually thought about it. Again, I'm sorry that you are mentally handicapped forever
>>729274358Eizen.
>>729274646I have. That aspect was terrible.
>>729274592And now you enjoy young (fr*nch) adults and teenagers being awkward and cringe for 50h, you truly levelled up bro, nothing more mature than some fr*nchmen in their late 20s acting and animating like a 2020 anime character
I just want to say, fuck the federation, fuck the prime directive and I'm gonna fuck my hot robot/
>>729274759>some fr*nchmen in their late 20scmon nigga the name of the game literally tells you how old they are, at least try to shitpost properly
>>729252591Baten kaitos is finally a good price (it has been $20 before which was good but I missed it) so I'm replaying those. I just want to skip to origins but I'm not. The 2x battle speed makes 1 a lot better but savyna is unfortunately unplayable with it on so I have gibari in my party with xelha and kalas.
>>729274678its called growing up anon, maybe someday you will also feel it
>>729274796>Dunks on EDGE MAVERICK's descendant.I like 4 but that was well deserved.Literally nobody respect the UP3.
>>729274587Her and the spear girl brought the cast down. Cast would've been perfect at just Velvet, Rokarou, Eizen and Laphicet.
>>729274796>saves SORay is a CHAD
>>729274972Wrong. All the party members are excellent. I can respect not liking Eleanor much but if you don't like Magilou you have no soul.
>>729274796based
>>729274428>99.9% of the genre is badokay
>>729275053she is LITERALLY build for sex with Ray
>>729275029>Eleanor, one of the 3 characters that actually has a reason to be in the team is the worst oneBerseriafags are insane
>>729274660Yes it does.
>>729274910Even in Star Trek the Prime Directive is something that isn't often done right a lot of the time. Kirk had the right of it. The PD exists to protect less developed worlds from outside influence but it should never allow for inaction of those who can save them. The people may be changed but that's better than letting them be annihilated. Fayt was too hung up on not helping were he can, edge screwed up so hard they had the make the thing in the first place. Ray doesn't just jump in without a care but he can't ignore what is in front of him and I liked that he and Elena actually discuss it but help out anyways
>>729270534I've been interested in Reverse Collapse for a while but man it never seems to go on a significant sale, should I just bite the bullet and buy it now? I guess the base price is pretty low.
>>729275139I said I can understand, not that I agree.
>>729275184It's 20 bucks for a 60+ hour game, I'd say it's well worth it
any JRPG where the MC actually fucks his love interest?
>>729275235Don't
>>729275267Xenogears
>>729275310>>729275310fuck, i forgot to write "except Xenogears"
>>729275267Xen..>>729275346Oh...
>>729263502To this day, there is not a single map theme I've heard that has made me feel as if I'm on an adventure moreso than this one track. Legendia is a C game with an SSS+ soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfpGu1uckLE
>>729271868>Last Ranker, but it's JP only.A quick look at cdromance reveals that it has an english patch.
>>729271760Star Ocean The Second Story R is absolutely the definitive version of the game.
>>729275267Honestly at this point I'm happy if the MC so much as acknowledges he actually HAS a love interest romantically.
>>729275267I haven't finished it but the MC of Bahamut Lagoon looks like he has a nice love interest.
>>729275423Go Shiina is criminally under appreciated https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC81AUNoOWM&list=PL6812E46CC30B40BF&index=14Gib Chloe ending
>>729275167No it doesn't.
>>729271049Isn't that what FF13 did?
>>729275568I'm happier if there's no romance and the story focuses on something else entirely instead of hamfisting something into the plot that tells the player nothing fucking matters unless you get pussy.
>90 hours into octopath 0>not even halfway donethis game is bad for me
This one any good?
>>729271049>All they got to do is replace random battles with a series of setpiece battles until you reach a bossFinal fantasy exists for casuals like you.Actual human beings enjoy having a choice.
>>729275263Alright fine, I guess I'll bite back my 'never buy games on less than 50% sale' autism and just go for it. The plot sounds like exactly the kind of anime bullshit I love, and I'm also a big fan of difficult tactical RPGs.
>>729275697Chloe is made for Moses. Leave Senel to his incest ending with Shirley. https://youtu.be/rV_hs_mFt_0?list=PL6812E46CC30B40BF
>>729275523No, it's a tradeoff compared to the original. It has just as many pros as cons so while it's good it doesn't replace the original.
>>729275807I don't disagree. Better to not bring it up at all if you're not gonna commit. I just get really annoyed the hero is some dense motherfucker who wants to go on another journey or something gay like that. At the very least act like you noticed girls exist for crying out loud. It's not like a want them to be a suave ladies man or anything but good christ.
>>729275901Senel can only love two things in a carnal way, one is Stella, the other is bread. You Shirleysisters need to cope already, she's not getting her holes stretched by Senel.
>>729275713The best characters (Dias, Precis, Welch, ect.) are all built around spamming 1/2 moves and nothing else.
>>729275901Shirley sucks.
>>729268328as much as I like jarpigs and think both games there are pretty good, Elden is in its own category for me. What a game
>>729274796>fuck my hot robotMan I really need to play Star OceanWhere do I even start with this shit?
>>729271049All I want is just one fucking JRPG where I'm given a mission board structure to approach the game however I want to. The absolute closest I've experienced is FFTA/2 allowing me to choose whatever missions I wanted to while also always dangling the main story missions in front of me. I don't know why this is so hard of a choice for devs when you could very easily just make a screen to choose what quest you want to do, do it, and ignore random encounters that aren't related to it, while choosing to engage with them if you simply want to.
>>729276096They're all pretty stand alone. You can start with the new one if you'd like. 2's the big nostalgia baby.
>>729275990>>729276035I'm not arguing in favor of Shirley, I simply do not want a Chloe "route" where she's wasted on Senel.
>>729275932Alright, maybe I'm misremembering because I haven't played the original in a while, what do you think was better about it?
>>729276096Skip 1 and 5, play whichever one you want. They're all part of a timeline but different spots.3 is the very end of the timeline.4 is closest to the start.None of the background details matter a big amount, but it does add some neat texture behind the scenes.
>>729274796I wish the characters in game actually looked like the art work and not goofy potato dolls. How's the combat? Standard mashy action RPG?
>>729275896Enjoy anon
>>729276248It's decent but still pretty mashy
>>729275064>99.9% of JRPGs have automated encountersWhat?
>>729275896kek got him
>>729274224Anon, your inner child is dead. Your life is all downhill from here. The only cure is watching stuff like the Sonic Adventure 2 cutscenes and hoping they reignite some long, lost feeling.
>>729276178It's way better balanced. You actually have to work towards unlocking skills. There's some shit in the remake (equipment Factors) that are a net negative and clutter the inventory.
>>729275184>Reverse Collapsebetween this and Brown Dust the Chinese are killing it
>>729275267Valkyrie Chronicles and Wild Arms 2. They have something in common, too.
>>729274489Anyone know the name of this RPG?
>>729276364>It's way better balanced. You actually have to work towards unlocking skills. What? Not it's fucking not. The balance is a complete joke because you can unlock the XP gain and skill point gain much much earlier. You can be out the fist gate and start leveling up skills you wouldn't get till the last portions of the original.
>>729276298I might buy it if it's cheap, then.>>729275932>it doesn't replace the original. It absolutely does. The on field encounters alone make it infinitely better to actually play, and SO2 never had good pre-rendered backgrounds by PS1 standards so the 3D areas were just better to explore.
>>729276396Please don't group coomer gacha slop with RC please. And no, aside from it the majority of Chinese games coming out are generic souls clones or genshin clones

>>729276528Hat World: New Testament
>>729276165Alright guess I could always just work my way back from there if I like it enough>>729276241Gotcha I'll keep that in mind
6 feels like it really slipped under everyone's radar. I wish it got more attention art wise.
>>729276535Yes, I was saying the original has better balancing.
>>729274796You're telling me this CHAD got to fuck the latest big tiddy descendant of Claude C. Kenny, the family of famous heroes?
>>729276165Elena is really fun to play. She and Bacchus are my favorite playables in SO.
>>729276860Well then I guess I'm the retard. My bad.
>>729276891I mean it's an option but Mari's kind of a retard and her tits aren't that big. Not compared to wifebot.
where do i go from here
>>729276992Only ending that shows a kissu btw
>>729276364The early game didn't feel particularly imbalanced my recent run (was on the hardest difficulty, Chaos?) but I guess that's a fair point. Maybe I just didn't abuse IC/specialty hard enough to really break it, I never consulted guides much (and didn't really grind until Energy Nede). Also fair on the inventory clutter, scrolling through the inventory in 2R is a nightmare.
>>729276917Man, I really don't like the cast of 4 but it really annoys me that it's the one game in the series most committed to the STAR part of Star Ocean. I guess the CHF and space slut aren't so bad but and Bachus is pretty cool but good christ did Lymle make me want to rip my eats off.
>>729252721Late but never believe the retards in this site that shill the GBA games. Just start with 3 houses
>>729277070Yeah these games would be way better if you visit more planets and shit. Being stuck to one medieval planet and then going to space for a couple hours in the rest is a bit of a let down. The ship designs are also top notch.
>>729277126I really do like the scifi aesthetic SO has and wish more games had that or a more 90s anime "retro-scifi" look. Planets are too big, though, I'd want a game set in low orbit bouncing around space stations or something.
>>729277204Phantasy Star is a bit more even on the whole I think. It's very fantasy but more sci fi. Science Fantasy. Like there's monsters and magic and swords but also robots and tanks and space ships. It is neat.
>>729277037I remember fucking around with skills, duping infinity things and leveling from like 30 to 100 just by menuing (I'm sure you can do it earlier) in 2RLater on you have multiple ways to become straight up invulnerable though that's in the original too
>>729277350Yeah but aren't they all very plain and grindy outside of 4 which is regarded as far and away the best?
>party member dying in battle means they don't get exp>now your party levels up at different intervalsThis shit PISSES ME OFF!!!
>>729277403A little I suppose. No more so than any other games of their era. I don't know what you really want out of games that old.
>>729277453>I don't know what you really want out of games that old. There are snappier and faster paced games, like FFV or Chrono Trigger.
>>729277015have you played most of the classics already? if not, play lufia 2. or star ocean second story r for something that's on steam
>>729277538Which came out much later. I don't think you get how old these games are. Phantasy Star 3 came out in 1990
Psssh...
>>729274224groan another one of these fags. why does this site have so many of them
>>729277606>Which came out much later.FFV came out between PS3 and 4.
>>729274224>unironically E33 had the most non retarded non childish story and characters in the last 5 yearsIt was pure millennial redditor "relatable" drivel. There is nothing mature about it because it does somber shots in black and white where people drone on about melancholy.
>>729277567man all my niggas love Lufia 2KEK the main heroineFALL for and MARRY the newcomerHAVE KIDSReiwa ideals came early in this game despite it being Heisei 7
>>729277750I want you think about what you wrote and then figure out why it's stupid on your own.
>>729277634To think they wasted Sho Hayami on this fucking bum
>>729277736yeah, they come into a thread full of enjoyers enjoying things just to bitch and cry>WOE is me I do not enjoy the thing you enjoy because of my REFINED TASTES a boo hoo hoo
>>729277871And I want you to be not-stupid enough to realize that more concise and snappy gameplay isn't directly related to age, and that PS3 isn't some magical cutoff where everything before and up to its release counts as old. Please don't be retarded enough to pretend that 2 years is some massive thing and 1992 was late, especially when games like DQ3 came out in 1988.
>>729277895I liked Arise and even I'm gonna tell you that guy sucked. I swear I honestly feel like the days of the good RPG villain are long in the past.
>>729274660Sorry I can't hear you over>BARRIER! BARRIER! BARRIER! BARRIER! BARRIER! BARRIER! BARRIER!as that's how I beat the whole postgame of 2R. Dias' Air Slash got me through Energy Nede. On the plus side, I did punch my way through the first part of the game with Rena.
>>729275346Xenoblade 1Xenoblade 2Xenoblade 3
>>729277829Posting this in the same thread people defend >>729265307 is just comical. Know your place, weeb. You are lesser. E33 mogs your entire history.
>>729278323Okay, retard. Enjoy pretending this writing is mature or well done.
>>729278323Nobody's defending the latter. Everyone who like JRPGs know there cornball. They like the cornball. You're just retarded pretending to be profound.
I always see Witch Spring R being shilled, is it actually good or just cunny witch?
Think I'm gonna start my .hack revisit tomorrow and get infection with a widescreen patch.
>>729278635Have fun and enjoy tard wrangling the AI companions, I swear Kite is the only competent player in the world.
>>729278635Enjoy! I'm going to emulate IMOQ soon, I'm sick of waiting for a remaster.
>>729278930Yeah I specifically remember the Skeith fight taking me like 30 minutes as a kid because I had to learn how to be a healer on the fly since Mistral kept trying to be a hero and getting laid out by Skeith.>>729278948Thanks and same. In addition to IMOQ I've also been waiting for a remaster of Skies of Arcadia that I feel will buckle soon, so that will probably be on the horizon soon.
Should I give Astlibra another shot? I played the demo, didn't grab me much and I'm not a fan of beat em ups at all.Found the story interesting in the little bit I read tho
I like E33 and I love JRPGs so this kind of low tier trolling doesn't really affect me at all.
>>729279286NO YOU DON'T IDORT
>>729279240The demo is notorious for being a poor representation of what the game is like.
>>729279396I played the demo part that played the start of the game as well, or is that completely different too?
>>729279240Astlibra is easily the best video game I've played in years. I wouldn't really call it a 'beat em up' either, it's a side scrolling action game with a lot of different equipment to grind/master (you get new abilities from mastering equipment).
>>729276590>>729276579Thanks, Kings.Also, found it.
>>729263502https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L6p1sAEehM
>>729280154Me playing SMT5 the first time
>>729278435I think i forgot about every dialogue scene in this game immediately because the characters are just so fuckin' flat. To be fair i'm pretty sure half the scenes are just characters looking around or being confused/confusing while pretentious french vocals play (all french vocals are pretentious obvs)>>729279396Maybe i should try it again too, i tried the demo and dropped it in short order. Maybe once i've finished the TitS remake
>>729280519E33's story is just painfully dull and mediocre until the shoe drops which justifies the hours and hours of nothing. The marvel-like writing doesn't help either but damn is the twist good, especially since it ties up most of the game's art decisions and thelike together
>>729280478When i got to the second big open desert level with a different colour filter over it i alt-f4'd and never went back. I miss SMT 3 & 4, i want dungeons and meaningful resource attrition
>>729280604SMT5 is still a great game and the vengeance route at least swaps the third area for a better looking one but it really did get monotonous. At least there are some good looking locations to break up the "ruined city and sand" shit sometimes but not nearly enough for a whole game.
>>729280594Yeah I agree with all of that and I liked the twist on its own, but then it feels like Act 3 was just rushed to get to the conclusion without fully exploring the consequences of the twist. I don't think the player even has enough information to choose an ending in an informed way
>>729265893Not him but the pacing is pretty bad.Even the sidequests are all locked behind "bonds" and it's pretty much S.Links but way worse. So basically after each main quest you go through your list.Navigating through dungeons is also annyoing because when you pull a lever or open a chest you get a short cutscene which gets annoying fast.
>>729258287The part between the etrian odyssey island and the opera house was un fucking believable.ATLUS seriously needs to retire the goddamn calendar system they learned nothing from P5's pacing issues.
>>729280780>Even the sidequests are all locked behind "bonds" and it's pretty much S.Links but way worse. They did S.links better by making them 8 ranks instead of 10 and they ALWAYS level up so if you choose the wrong reply you don't have to sit through a time wasting day to rank up.But I'd prefer to not have social links at all. They're quests with no interactivity, just dialogue choices. That's not entertaining. Also Gallica waifu
i want to play Unicorn Overlord but i refuse to buy a Switch, and i don't feel like going through the trouble of emulating it either. fuck Fatlus
>>729281005Gay.
>>729280901>>729281005the calendar and social link slop turned me off metaphor. If i wanted persona i'd play persona
>>729252591What happened to jrpg general in /vg/?
>>729281165>don't feel like going through the trouble of emulating itIt emulates really well though. I've played with literally zero issues on Ryujinx.
I appreciate Metaphor for having a role like a tank that actually works. Furthermore Heismay turns into an overpowered dodge tank by endgame, which was just fucking awesome. So the gameplay's alright by me.
>>729277923it's even worse because they'll circle back sooner or later knowing they were absolute fucking retarded
>>729262941FFVII or Persona 2 EP. I actually like the cast in all the Utaware games especially the last 2, but it’s mainly because Haku bounces off everybody really fucking well. For the actual cast though, I don’t like Atuy or Fumirul at all.
>>729281005>But I'd prefer to not have social links at all.The calendar Persona games always wear me down sooner rather than later. I don't really like going through the motions. It gets repetitive watching the cycle sequences, going to door chores or talk to a nerd or whatever when I really just want to move onto the next plot dungeon but oh you have to wait the same amount of time anyways even if you knock it out within the first week or so.
