Do you speak Japanese?
>>
>>729254683
I self-taught myself up to N3 level (took and passed the exam too). I stopped doing it a few years ago because it really isn't worth the time unless you are going to make a career out of it. Being able to read the original Japanese text of games doesn't really elevate or change the experience that much. Get a decensor patch if it really bothers you. Also, most untranslated games are untranslated for a reason; they're dogshit.
>>
Why would I wast time studing gook language when ai can translate just fine entire games?

No need.
AI is so good at sussing out localization bullshitters that it has invalidated the very concept of spending years learning any language.

I do, just got back from Japan. Went to an erotic cosplay event at a bar in Nagoya, some dude was totally wasted and thought it would be funny if a foreigner played Twister with the girls so he bought me VIP. Ended up winning so I was awarded VIP for next time... whenever that is. /blog

you're supposed to use that knowledge to go to Japan and explore the country side without getting killed by the crazed farmers
>>
>>729255809
I can attest to this. I've hit char limit many times ranting about the loss in characterization, themes, ect from garbage localizations. He's also lying about untranslated content. Only a fraction of content gets translated and you're missing out on so much if you don't know the language. While this isn't a big deal for most people, warding people off of learning by claiming untranslated works are bad is downright malicious. And ultimately unnecessary as the difficulty of learning Japanese already acts as a natural filter against retards.

Literally nothing. If it is "lost" in translation, then it probably didn't actually matter and was ditched for a reason, such as sucking or sounding like ass.

When the alternative is playing shit where the translator gave up on even pretending to render the text in the target language and instead starts leaving lazy footnotes everywhere, hoping you'll get the message, yes, I think it's well worth it to learn the language.
>>
>>729258735

This.
N3 will only see you picking out random words here and there while the rest disappears in a sea of aural slush, and we're talking even for the easiest of easy shit.
Hell, I know N1 passers who can barely survive a single episode of basic battle shounen without reaching for the dictionary, who lack the endurance to binge watch.
Seems that people love to talk about learning the language and yet you rarely see people who actually sit down and read, listen, watch, engage with it in the amounts a person truly needs to get decent at it. No amount of study can magically materialize the amount of mental room you need to process shit at the speeds it comes at you in real-world scenarios.
>>
>>729258735
as someone who studied for many years. if you like japanese stuff you will enjoy it a lot more. if you don't really care about the japanese part you may start to dislike it.

Tbf, while I'm not a fan of the translation here, the obvious
>Morning
>Good morning
Doesn't work because
>Morning
>Good Morning
>You don't need to add the good
Isn't an interaction you'd have in english. And so there isn't an obvious way to get all the meaning across without altering the scene in some way.
>>

Understand? Yes
I learnt japanese to play eroge yet now i barely read them, I finally started white album 2 after years of putting it off and I lost interest after a couple of hours
Sad
>>
>>729259192
People stress N levels but I'd probably fail N3, definitely N2-1 and can read basic stuff without a dictionary. And if you have a dictionary you're good to go. People overestimate how much japanese knowledge you need to immerse. You don't need much, what's more importance is patience and tolerance.
>>
>>729259176
What helped me with that, was associating each character with something it looked like. Do that enough and you eventually just remember the character itself.
>>
>>729259461
we were talking about understanding anime. native level spoken language on tv

Is that not basic? Most anime count as basic.
>>
>>729258735
It depends. On trashy anime, it sucks because you reading subs = you not looking at the shitty animation quality. But on better anime, it's really exciting.
There's been a few scenes where I stopped reading the subs, and it absolutely elevated the dramatic moment, enough to move me to tears. It was in mushoku tensei season 2 when Rudy had asked for sylphy's hand in marriage
>>
>>729259691
At that point you start applying things. Find some Japanese media you like and start reading.
>>
Do you know how to handwrite in 日本語?
I've gotten to a point I can read and type some stuff but I can't see myself handwritting Kanji any time soon.
>>
>>729259696
depends on the show, no? but that's beside the point. listening isn't reading and if i take away the option to pause bc it's a tv broadcast, how are you gonna fare?

>>729259869
>Do you know how to handwrite
yes
>>
>>729259869
Writing is how I actually remember the stuff. I hand-wrote all my flashcards and that helped immensely. I still remember a ton of stuff from like 7-8 years ago because of it.
I definitely couldn't write now cause I haven't practiced, but any time I decide to learn, I do writing in addition to the rest.
>>
>>729259869
i can write it, but don't expect me to get the correct stroke order for any kanji ever
>>
>>729259992
So did you do reps, or just write it down if you got it wrong?
>>
>>729260143
nta but i must've written many of the basic kanji over 500 times by now
>>
>>729260143
Both. I used a notebook to practice writing the kanji, and then when I could write it confidently without 'cheating', then i'd make the flashcard.
the flashcard had the kanji on the front, and the back would have some sample sentences that i formulated, and then the readings for it in the corner.
I'd take a pic but it's all at home.

You don't even need to speak to anyone in Japan. Google Maps tells you what buses to take and everything. I was in the middle of rural Gunma and it gave me directons for a nearby bus that came every 2 hours. I had to sit there a while and it was freaking 10 mins late
