I've been playing automata for the first time this week and I like it a lot, but there's some quests are bullshit, like the racing ones holy shit, what is this? I just wanted an anime girl adventure.

You are correct. Nier Automata was mid compared to Nier and even Drakengard, and it's obvious why; they spent all of their time making 2B and A2 sexy and decided to make the absolutely fuck ass retarded decision of hiring Platinum to develop the combat system (Platinum being known for their absolutely bare bones and asinine combat design). Drakengard 2 plays better than N:A and I'm pretty pissed admitting that.

Automata is fine but doesn't really shine until the late game. The slow early game is necessary to set up the pieces to knock over, but it ends up tonally satisfying throughout the entire third act. The combat felt pretty lackluster, though. Replicant/Gestalt knew the combat was just kind of there as a vehicle for game progression while Automata tried to treat the combat as an end in itself. While focusing your video GAME on GAMEPLAY is best in most cases, the combat wasn't entertaining enough to warrant the focus the game placed on trying to make it feel deep. The hacking shmup sections were actually fun as fuck, I don't know why people complain about them so much
