Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark added a multiplayer mode with online matchmaking in an update. Why aren't there more multiplayer metroidvanias?

Because it's unfortunately not a good genre for player skill expression outside of speedrunning, and the appeal is exploring stuff alone. Multiplayer if not competitive is boring because it doesn't really change anything imo. It's fun to fool around in multiplayer mods for AM2R, Super Mario 64 or Hollow Knight for instance but the games clearly weren't designed for it compared to Monster Hunter or Left 4 Dead.
Also most of what I said doesn't matter if it's about local multiplayer, in that case any game becomes fun with friends or family, or has at least an easier chance to be fun thanks to the other person(s). More difficult to achieve online without a mic and/or someone you know for a long time
