>making a fall guy out of your best asset until he resigns
what were they thinking?
>>
To be fair, the idea of making Hollywood movies instead of games was pretty bad. Advent Children worked out afterwards but somebody had to take responsibility for such a massive fuckup.
>>
The soul left with him.
>>
>>729287054
Squares best games were all directed by Kitase - FF6, FF7 and Chrono.
>>
>>729288423
and as soon as he had free reign he gave us XIII
>>
>>729285839
When the cats away the mice all play
>>
>>729288423
And who was producer and leading the teams, making sure things didn’t go to shit?
>>
Spirits Within was such a blunder it almost ruined the company. Despite popular belief they were planning to merge with Enix even before the movie flopped and said flop almost made Enix pull out which would have doomed Square. Sakaguchi was very much the guy behind that, they didn't make a fall guy out of him he just fucked up.
>>
>>729288594
Motomu Toriyama
>>
>>729288594
of the good games? sakaguchi. The only decent game kitase produced was FFX which still had input from sakaguchi, and that was barely enough to salvage it.

What do you think things are like in the timeline where Squaresoft goes under after Spirits Within?
>>
>>729288423
I always forget Kitase was actually responsible for good games in the past because he's come off like a complete out of touch retard in interviews for years.

Exactly. It’s not even about which individual games people prefer, his leadership was invaluable to square, as has become increasingly clear since his departure.
>>
>>729288820
then why did he almost lead them to the end of the company with a shitty movie
>>
>>729285839
He had to take responsibility and it couldn't be helped.
>>
>>729288849
because those are different field? a good game director isn't automatically a good movie director
>>
>>729288682
they would have just been bought out by enix and things would be exactly the same

>>729288849
Because he didn’t stay in his lane.

>>

>>
>>729287054
This
A lot of old Square employees said that Sakaguchi is the one holding everything together
He might not be the best director but he was the leader of the pack
>>
>>729288849
spirits within was much less of a flop than ffxiv 1.0 or most of the polymorphic content that wasn't FF7slop, sakaguchi was mostly forced out of the company because it was getting more and more corporate and he was a massive liability for wanting the company to remain creative and not soulless
>>
>>729289030
for what? SE released way more games on the actual successful nintendo consoles than anywhere else

Now look at the state of mainline FF, the titled sequels are failures while the spirtual successor game made in the spirit of the Square Soft era taking notes from those FF games is a massive success.
The Gooch was a winner and had a winning formula, Square Enix had to throw it all away because of egos.
>>
>>729296932
he literally made the company what it was, pretty much every soulful game squaresoft made can be traced back to him
>>
>>729296932
>He killed a game company
He made Square Soft, if anyone had the right to 'kill it' it was him.
Look at Square Enix, there have been Directors and Producers who have made far bigger mistakes over the years than Sakaguchi yet they still managed to cling onto SE.
Look at the Saka, he makes one failure with Spiritis Within and Square gets rid of him.
Meanwhile they've had multiple people making MASSIVE mistakes, their former CEO who dumped money into NFTs after the market was bust, pumping over $100million into Forspoken, $250million into the Avengers game, selling off their Western IPs like Tomb Raider and Hitman for peanuts to Embracer, only for Embracer to then make huge amounts from those money if I remember correctly they sold either Hitman or Tomb Raider for some bullshit options and not strictly money as well which makes it even funnier and even more of a massive laughing stock.
Then you look at what they've done to FF7 remakes, split it into three games and changed the story, no one fucking asked for that.
You look at FF16 and FF15 before that.
All the failures of the AA division.
Then all the mobile gacha games they've released only to shut them down a year after release.
They're a fucking mess without Sakaguchi because he was an expert tard wrangler of talent.
He wasn't just a businessman he was also a Creative, and no one in Square Enix has that kind of talent.

God I hate millennials, saying he was Square's biggest asset is like saying Inafune was Capcom's biggest asset, this useless fraud is not only responsible for the destruction of many franchises and teams within Square and the rise of moviegames, he was propped up for decades by both Nintendo and Microsoft and he produced nothing but dogshit kusoge because he's an incompetent pencil pusher who does not know a thing about designing games, see his latest flop Fantasian being yet another piece of garbage everybody laughed at for a week and then immediately forgot.

Easy to be the common factor when you're the head of your company and everything has to go through you.
And strangely enough, once this supposed common factor couldn't coast on the actual talent behind those games he immediately fell into irrelevance and produced nothing but flops, unlike most other guys he pushed out of the company and industry with his retarded policies and favoritism.

Lost Odyssey is low effort dogshit that bombed and nobody cared about, he also made nothing but write the main scenario which nobody cares about, everybody admits the only good parts of the games where the mini flashback stories that weren't even written by him, you are delusional and should take that miniscule wrinkled cock out of your mouth before you type another post

Of course I'm comparing a B tier franchise that never had a hold in the west and actually sold well with the supposed superstar JRPG producer that was given unlimited budget and advertising and failed horribly.
You have to give up nigger, even when Microsoft gave him the boot after Blue Dragon also flopped, he went to beg to Nintendo and kept pushing out turds that flopped horribly like Last Story.
Then he moved onto mobile where he lucked out again exactly once with Terra Battle (The console port he promised for years never happened btw) and immediately after that he fucked up again with Terra Battle 2 and effectively deleted all the money he managed to make with the first game, despite also begging SE Tabata to make an exclusive crossover advertisment DLC for FF15.
The man is a pathetic fraud, and Fantasian's abject failure once again showed that.

>Oh yeah because high sales and low sales dictates a games quality right?
So we can agree Squaresoft's "golden age" is also fake and full of dogshit games, right?
After all you just said it yourself, if game quality is not related to high sales and low sales then why is Sakaguchi supposed to be such a legendary developer given the vast majority of Square's output is also trash?
The truth is Mistwalker's games bombed commercially because they were bad games that couldn't coast on millennial propaganda and a severely restricted market with no choice, meanwhile you have other bad games like FF6 or 7 that were successful purely because of a fortuitous market environment that no longer exists today, which is why current FF is in freefall as a franchise, not because that worthless hack is gone, but because the series could only be relevant when it had no competition due to market factors.
And again, look at Sakaguchi's output today and it's all the same low quality garbage that nobody cares about because there's no gigantic propaganda machine in a closed market to prop it up as the second coming of christ.

You lost, that hack fraud lost as well.

Except FF15 sold more than pretty much any of its predecessors outside of X, FF14 eclipsed all of its predecessors in terms of popularity after ARR and it's the most lucrative FF game ever, so you're wrong.
Thing is the FF userbase is 30-40 years old jaded millennials who don't even know what they like anymore and loves to bitch about anything because they're manchildren incapable of critical thought and introspection, FF as a franchise is dying because it has no appeal outside of that specific demographic, not because the games got worse, they're just as shit as they've always been but the thing is the userbase itself is not seeing a generational turnover precisely because the new generations weren't born during the times FF was the big fish in the small pond so they do not have any emotional attachment to it and can see the mediocrity through an unbiased point of view.
FF's biggest enemy is its own schizophrenic fans who love to bitch about things they loved in one game if they appear in one game they don't like for whatever reason, or just parrot whichever decades old e-celeb opinion managed to fossilize within the community.

Sorry to break it to you again, but if that were true then at the very least Sakaguchi's various games with Mistwalker wouldn't have failed horribly and Fantasian in particular would have been a massive hit within your specific demographic, it even has the "prerendered" backgrounds you love so much.
But lo and behold, it didn't, because as I said, you people don't actually know what you fucking like, or rather are loathe to accept that you are only interested in surface level dogshit with a specific brand name attached to it and nothing else.
Which brings me back to my original point that again, FF had no specific demographic outside of the wider casual audience, which is why through the years it kept pushing gimmicks onto gimmicks on top of its basic bitch formula that was stolen from Dragon Quest without actually solidifying any sort of identity or userbase beyond the immediate casual market that was available for every single title.
Which by the way is something that was also confirmed by the producers themselves, as FF's never had any coherent philosophy outside of doing whatever the current director thought was "cool" at the time, your very own hero Gooch shilled both FF14 and 15 massively too because he's a sellout fraud with no honour or principles.
>>729306463

i wouldn't say straight up better but yeah, parasite eve (not the shitty sequel), vagrant story, chrono trigger, front mission (collaborative, but still), secret of mana, FF tactics, bahamut lagoon... these guys were on a fucking roll but the gaslighters want you to believe that it's modern square is the same

Sakaguchi was the realest nigga at Square. But he flew too high, that movie was a bad idea.
I think back then Square was planning on some multimedia marvelverseslop kind of thing.

yeah they funded a dedicated studio for their movie division, they poured everything into the tech itself without realizing people enjoyed those cinematics as part of their cool jrpg settings, not as a generic science fiction movie. I wanted a FF movie that started like pic, not like whatever we got.

No one ever talks about how Tetsuya Nomura added Sakaguchi to Kingdom Hearts for commentary on what happened. Yeah people will go Eraqus is an Anagram for Square but why do you think that is? Both made gigantic fucking mistakes and were responsible for fucking things up. It probably gets more specific but I dont remember the full story.

Spirits Within was basically just Mass Effect but 6 years early, if they had made it a game for the next gen instead and told Sakaguchi to make his movie of it later the entire gaming landscape would probably be different

i'm not pretending, this is a fact. the problem isn't that square didn't release on n64, it's how they parted way with nintendo at the time

Totally unrelated but I recently learned that Amano was inspired by working on Front Mission to add military tech stuff to FF6 which is probably why they got more scifi with militaries and shit. And I just think that's neat. People forget the non FF games besides chrono trigger.

The 'Guchi, as I often call him, was a leader and a visionary. He put people in the right places, and Squaresoft made everything from Final Fantasy, to the Mana series, Saga, Bushido Blade, Parasite Eve, Chrono series, etc, etc, etc. As the leader of Squaresoft in the 90s, he probably has the most impressive catalog of video games (both in terms in sales and critical praise) of any company ever. You could probably put Squaresoft games from the 90s right up next to some mega publisher like EA's entire catalog and it will stand up just fine if not better.

Contrarian. 9 was already a shitty nostalgiabait cashgrab trying to bring back the copypasted combat theme intro 1-6 used to use, to come off like it's "just like the old days". Shit visuals, shit story, nobody cares but a small niche of contrarian faggots. There are better games within 1-5, but most of them didn't make it to the west until they were many years old, and with an even longer delay to not have that nintendo of america censorship applied.

A company reliant on old men is doomed to fail, most especially a single old man. Any time Sakaguchi let a younger member try anything he would sabotage them, FF8 being a prime example where he pulled half the team mid development after giving them an already tight window for release. He was more concerned about his own job security than the future of the company.
>>

She said at one point, talking about the protag.

Normies didn't care if it was the pioneer of anything, they clearly didn't have the technology to make a full CGI movie yet.
I honestly only watched it because it had Final Fantasy in its name, but after the credits rolled I was really stretching it to find any actual relation to Final Fantasy in that random sci-fi movie. I guess it had crystals? Anyway.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

See, you're a retard, because you don't understand that while the individuals may have been unimpressive on their own, they shined in collaboration and lifted up the whole. Maybe this analogy will get through your low IQ consciousness: It's like a band, where talented members leave and both that member and the remaining band (if it stayed together) never quite found the same level of success they had before the break up.

You see these names not succeeding and assume that means they were always talentless hacks, but you ignore that with their exit the quality from the studios they left plummeted, even if the individual never quite was able to replicate their success while within the collaboration.

tldr; you're a fucking retard.

The only time I've ever seen anyone pretending to care about 9 was here on /v/ in recent years, where you tiny minority of 9tards barge into every single final fantasy thread on the board and try to act like the game was some secret hidden gem, yet also the biggest and best game of all time.

And yet both of those are more successful than anything Sakaguchi ever did after leaving Square, XBC2 alone made more profit and got more following than Mistwalker's entire portfolio.
How come Takahashi managed to not only survive Scamco hell but eventually turn his company into a Nintendo pillar with million selling games and close collaborations with Nintendo on other first party games while Sakaguchi failed to do the same? Even Koichii Ishii managed to get under Nintendo's wing by actually making good games and also staying humble as fuck after leaving Square, but curiously the legendary developer Sakaguchi couldn't.
How come Minaba&Co. managed to strike gold with Granblue and turned into a massive franchise that somehow keeps printing money to this day with multiple spinoffs while Terra Battle crashed and burned in a couple of years?
How is it that all these "minor" Square devs who left the company are successful but strangely enough Sakaguchi did nothing but collect flop after flop? Maybe because he's actually a hack fraud who can't even keep a loyal niche audience because the game he produces are utter garbage nobody wants to play.
>>
>>729296932
The higher ups could have said no at any fucking time. Don't subscribe to Japan's inane bullshit where they pin all the blame on one guy. It takes more than one man's decisions to hurt a company as big as Square was.

> It's kinda boring but not offensively bad
this is the problem, a ton of amazing movies were coming out in the same year and the years previous, and spirits within had a gigantic budget that such a mediocre script doesn't need
this shit cost more to make then the phantom menance did, a movie that objectively had as advanced CGI as spirits within if not more, matrix had half its budget and likewise was a movie that really revolutionized certain special effects.

the movie cost a shitload and wasn't nearly good enough to make back its budget, it wouldn't have made back its budget even if it looked like beast wars or something
