>single-handedly in charge of the human race's AAA hyper-detailed open-world action RPGs for 30 years

How is it possible that in 2025 Bethesda still has no serious competitors?
>>
Because most people realize that developing that time of game is a very bad idea. Todd's just too stupid to know any better.
>>
>single handedly in charge of making games that are increasingly worse than morrowind for twenty plus years in a row
should I be clapping or something
>>
>>729289723
Oblivion is better.
>>
>>729289634
Because their games are low key garbage that's only held up by their modding community. Devs know that if they make a barebones piece of shit game like Bethesda does but with no modding backup then they're fucked.
>>
Wasn't Avowed supposed to be the Skyrim killer?
>>
Fallout 4 was good and im tired of pretending it wasnt!
>>
>>729289634
It's actually impressive how much companies avoid this niche, I thought Divinity was going to be a competitor but it's also turn based, Avowed is closer to Far Cry than Skyrim, Ubisoft can make open worlds but waste them in Assassin's Creed

We’re getting there with Cyberpunk 2077. Here are a list of RPG IPs that should follow first person open world rpg mechanic
>World of Darkness
>Conan the Barbarian
>Call of Cthulu
>Forgotten Realms
>Ravenloft
>Age of Sigmar

>>

no.

no one else makes open world games where I can self insert as a random dumbass and feel immersed like I am exploring the world and making my own quests. the others are too story driven basically GTA or COD
>>
>>729289816
Screw FO4, everybody knows its the best Fallout already. Far Harbor alone cements that. What im tired of is pretending Starfield is bad game. Sure the exploration is trash at the moment, but everything else is sublime. I would even say the writing is a net improvement over FO4. Emil gets way too much shit.
>inb4 someone replies with barret/sarah scene

>>729289634
The barrier to entry is just fucking enormous. Both, the funds and experience required to hit that Bethesda tier content density is just unattainable for anyone else.
>>
>>729291470
>Bethesda tier content density
lmao
>>
>>729291470
Morrowind took 200k manhours. With modern tools, you could pull off a Morrowind-like in 100k hours if not less. Twenty people could do it in five years (2k hours per person per year). Ten could do it in ten years. No one does this because they're not that ambitious and want money fast.
>>
>>729291470
Bethesda games have the opposite of density

>How is it possible that in 2025 Bethesda still has no serious competitors?
Because competition is bad for business, what the fuck do you think regulations are for?

Show me one game, made by a different company, with the content density of a skyrim. Doesn't matter if the dungeons, caves and ruins all use the same 3 or 4 tile sets or themes. I'm not talking about quality but quantity. Just walking straight ahead in a Bethesda game, except for Starfield which is why it failed, for a couple minutes you will come across monsters, bandits, places to explore, loot and events that trigger quests.

>>729291710
>No one does this because they're not that ambitious and want money fast.

Or because they just don't have the experience and that is the part you can't buy. That takes many years of trying new stuff and failing. Bethesda has that in spades.
>>
>>729292045
Obsidian has experience
>>
>>729292084
Not in building a massive open world theme park with 100s of dungeons and interior locations accessible from the overworld. Not even Ubisoft, CDPR or Larian have that.
>>
>>729291317
I haven't played it so I have nothing to say about this!
>>
>>729289796
it didnt even have interactive objects
todd knows how important it is to make pillow forts or play dominoes with books to have a sense of immersion, shitty AAA devs who are just like 'yeah thats neat but id rather focus on the story' are flat retards. bethesda has consistently the worst stories in video games, story means shit. the crown jewel of bethesda lore isnt even its games storylines its the background lore scattered around with books

What the fuck is good about either of these games??
Quests and characters are lazily written
You don't feel shit for any one
Both are aesthetically bland and boring

Turn-based is a different ballgame.
>>
KCD and CP2077 are closest
So games like these require a lot of man power and budget

As always a quick trip to Wikipedia reveals all: "Morrowind was the best-selling RPG for Xbox in 2002.[79] It was one of the top 10 best-selling games on Xbox from May through October 2003, a full year after its initial launch.[79] The only other game to accomplish this feat was Halo.[79] " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_III:_Morrowind

Second, have you noticed there is a large percentage of gamers who like the idea of playing DnD, but not sticking with it? People who love to create characters, play it for maybe an hour or two, then drop it because they realize they locked themselves out of something. Or they read a guide on "How to be OP fast." Ever since F3 and Oblivion Bethesda has made sure you never feel like a choice you made will affect you later. Start as anything, then become anything, no consequences. People love that shit.

So theres a massive focus on appealing and marketing to console players AND the indecisive who don't like to live with their choices. The game sucks ass, but 90% of players never get that far to find out. I dont hold it against them, Bethesda simply found a market and is exploiting it.
>>
>>729289634
Too much work. Requires a special type of engine/tools. Most devs are too up their ass and feel like they can make the ultimate protagonist for the player, instead of CaC. Anyone who does anything remotely similar to bethesda, always leaves out core things, like magic, or character creation, or different races, etc. It's also why they don't want to give up the Gamebryo engine. Its easy to use, and perfect for Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.

It’s a lot of work.
I was just theory crafting how hard it would be to make a top down 2D Bethesda style game.
Even at a much smaller scale, it’s too much.
Content creation alone would take forever.
>>
>>729291317
>but everything else is sublime
No. As someone who's playing through it, it has a lot wrong with it.
>Every city is swamped in la creaturas
>Almost every single white couple has a brown child for no reason
>all the factions are shallow and barely existent
>Almost all the leaders are either brown, or women, and if black/brown will have a female 2nd in command
>Most companions are brown and/or gay, everyone talks in boomer reddit speak
>very little clothing choices, many of the choices set behind lvl requirements
>same prefab dungeon used for basic bases, including item placement and type
This one is actually really egregious. Like the cyro base always has the same sub story of the systems failing, all the same items in it, and same architecture/map.
>Buggy mess, also horribly optimized, regularly enemies part of radiant quests to hunt aren't even the same faction as the factions in the dungeon you're attacking
>Almost all the female kids have the same black kid face
Most egregious for the kids, considering the two main kids in the main story Cora and Shena or wtv her name are both black girls with the same face and hair, and both related to constellation main characters, egregiously lazy and poorly made.
>mechas featured heavily in lore, never actually used
There's a lot more but i think im hitting post limit soon. I didn't even touch on the loading screens either, or how ugly most of the suits are.
>>
>>729289765
But they did exactly that with Shartfield. It's got fuck all in terms of mods because the foundation itself is rotten.
>>
>>729297850
Nah dude SF is actually very good because you can shoot enemies, collect junk and build shit on empty planets
>>
>>729295416
No it doesn't, can't even be evil in any of them. Even Crimson fleet are a bunch of pussies.

My hope for AI is it would give a small time developer the ability to make their own skyrim knock off, then give it to a community to properly vet and design story content.

But knowing how the real world works, some big company would file a copyright claim and shut it down. Laws for you and me and another set for the 1%.
>>
>>729297941
>and build shit on empty planets
about that. even the base building is worse than fallout 4. There's next to no furniture to use, or storage. Main storage is two crate types, no dressers you can use, or cabinets like fallout, or safes or anything like that. Even the tables and bureaus are all like pre-fab space themed, even for apartments you buy in cities, so it all looks incredibly generic and shit, and you can only store shit in storage crates. One thing I also noticed is that the shower in residences you can buy doesn't even work, its cosmetic. And I don't mean the faucet, the door doesn't even open. You can't even enter it. It's really really bad.
>>
>>729298048
Even if ai gives you everything
and you have 20 guys
it's going to take you years to put it all together and make it fun
>>
>>729297001
DnD is for faggots though, because of the retarded class system, which is entirely artificial. It's one of the worst things to happen to the fantasy genre.
Also, it was very common for cRPGs to let you build your own characters without locking you into a class, long before Morrowind or any of its sequels came out. Both Ultima and Fallout did it, and both franchises were open world, and the older TES games gave you far more freedom when creating and leveling your character than the later ones.
>>
>>729291317
Bait used to be believable
>>
>>729298048
We already got open morrowind which was made from the ground up open source to be completely moddable, and unity daggerfall. So its possible. Personally, I had just hoped it would make modding easier for modders, not needing to beg people to voice act for them, and the people just vanishing halfway into voicing something leaving it all unfinished.

The story and characters in bethesda games is just background dressing for the world which is the main focus, this runs counter to most games where the world is just backround for the characters and story.
