Is Obsidian's Tyranny a good place to start if I haven't played any CRPG since the old Baldur's Gate games?
I don't see why not, it's pretty good. /v/ seems to hate it for some reason though.I really like the magic system and the characters are memorable.
I don't know why /v/ likes Tyranny. I feel like it has some sort of cult following here and to me it's just a way worse Pillars of Eternity. The writing is extremely cringe, the characters are all forgettable, the worldbuilding is ok and somewhat interesting (Black Company inspired) but doesn't really amount to all that much in the actual game. And the execution of the themes of "You are working for the bad guy" is extremely weak. They had to add an ending where you actually can even be bad all the way through, and it still feels very forced and like it's just an addendum at the end, when it should obviously be a full fledged path in a game where that's the entire point.Like I said, both Pillars of Eternity games are a way better place to go if you want to play a more modern Fantasy CRPG. That or Kingmaker.
>>729299286The setting is good but it's felt very unfinished, I'd recommend Pillars of eternity or Divinity original sin instead
>>729299286I'd say Tyranny is actually aimed at CRPG veterans because it's a short game built on replay value rather than some typical epic you'll put 50+ hours in.
>>729299286>Is an unfinished game with bad gameplay and a mediocre story a good place to start?Yes you'll at least enjoy the first 10 minutes
>>729299738>Black Company inspiredI found it comical how blatant they were at times, especially with Voices of Nerat.
>>729299738Big problem with Tyranny was expectations. People expected to be the Big Bad when in reality you're middle management handling a conquered territory. Game is also weirdly ambitious in scope for what it is. Spellcrafting and multiple HQs is too much for a game this short.
>>729300095>>729300160>LOLRANDUM CHAOTIC EVIL FACTION>somehow has better long term results than Graven Ashe, Archon who represent order and stability
>>729300254I didn't mind the middle management part. I minded essentially being forced into being at odds with the evil emperor and the villain ending being a poorly added thing that diverts from that. It feels like it betrays the whole setting. To me, being good in this game should have been something like Oskar Schindler (But less self-motivated kek). Not le ebin huge threat to the emperor.
>>729300430What do you mean, anon? There's a loyal route in the game as well.
>>729300526Like I said, it's essentially a diversion point from a forced conflict with the emperor. The game all but leads the story into you rebelling and then at the end they go "But you can not, if you want to keep being evil, I guess" And they added that after a patch
>>729299286>farts-in-shadows
>>729299286it's no masterpiece but I like how granular it is with reputations and choices
>>729299738>I don't know why /v/ likes Tyranny.Because is not that popular.
>>729300254Nah, dawg. Big problem is how DULL the fucking game is. Hope you enjoy fighting three enemy types + spirits because that's the entirety of enemy roster.
I like Tyranny more than most CRPGs. As someone who has bounced off most, Balders Gate and Divinity included, it’s one of the few I’ve felt compelled to finish. Played through twice actually.
>>729301247For me it's how short the game is. Don't have time for massive CRPGs anymore.
>>729299286Owlcat games are far far better
>>729299286>Tranny>Torment: Numale Erawhy did companies name them like that
I really liked the premise of working for an evil overlord but felt like the execution was poor in practice(felt like too many choices were black/white).
>>729299286I liked the expanded character backstory that actually ties into current events.
Felt like a revolution in slop before we used the word really.I looked forward to it thinking there could be a decent evil route for once but it was just some utterly forgettable mashup
>>729301781disfavored or Scarlet Chorus? what's the difference
