This is why you have children, break the cycle, make your children happy through the power of videogames
>>
My parents still insist on buying me games for Christmas. I appreciate the gifts but it’s kind of off putting having to artificially wait to play a specific game.
>>

Fine. Good, even.
>toiletries/soaps/deodorants
Practically serves the same utilitarian effect as getting clothes, but I always thought it was a weird gift, especially from anyone other than your parents.

The issue was not getting clothes and socks, the issue was that you got me ugly or cheap ones. That pack of everyday white socks from walmart that is barely 4 dollars is not a fucking gift and that generic button up shirt that looks just like the rest isn't cool. Even if that graphic tee is cringe or has super hero slop on it I'd rather have a shirt with something vaguely in to my interests than another dumb polo shirt that makes me looks even more like a reclusive nerd.

Gifts should be stuff you wouldn’t buy yourself
The only bad gift is stuff like consumable goods you’d buy yourself anyway
Clothes are fine but only if it’s stylish clothes
>b-but what if poor people that can’t afford
For everyone that isn’t a complete hopeless poorfag that shouldn’t be browsing /v/ anyway stuff like socks, toiletries and other utilities are perfectly affordable

Good gifts should make people happy.
They should be the equivalent of gifting a kid a toy.
They should not make you go

>>
>>729308069
To add to that
>you should be grateful for having X
Sure I am.
But that’s completely irrelevant to what is a good gift.
Gift giving is a tradition at Christmas.
Sure the family time is more important but it’s not a race.
If you already participate in said tradition, do it properly.
I’m not sperging about not getting good gifts.
I’m more baffled at people participating in a tradition and doing it completely wrong while also not enjoying it.
You’re supposed to THINK about your loved ones and how to make their day, even if only just a little bit.
This is also not about spending frivolously.
This Christmas I gifted my mum some cheese from a different part of the country you can’t get around here and told her I’ll go cook her a dish that my grandpa used to make.
It cost me just as much as buying socks would have,
I just had to think about her a bit more.
And that’s the shit all the
>muh appreciate what you have
Fags don’t get.

We do secret santas now that all of the grandchildren (us) are grown up. It takes me a while to think of what to tell people when asked because I'm an adult with big boy money, so most things I want at a gift giving price range I can just buy myself or are too niche to ask for.
I usually ask for baking books or cooking supplies but that well has been getting very dry since I can't think of anything new to ask other than something stupid expensive like a spiral mixer.

Yeah but they don't even make cool toys anymore. The gay retardification of video games, movies and TV happened in parallel with toys. The one time I shopped for my niece I was just wandering the isles marveling in horror at how there's nothing not gay and ratarded on the shelves. Ended up just getting her a karaoke machine you plug into the TV to annoy her parents with because she thinks screaming is singing.
>>
>>729320986
Based unc. She will have more fun with that anyway, and who knows. Maybe you created a new tradition in their house of family Karaoke night. That's the type of gift that makes memories
>>
>>729302248
Luxury toiletries are awesome
>>
>>729309112
Upgrade their technology, with half the gift being getting it set up and ready to go.
Set my mom up with a soundbar this year, and made sure it was one she could control with remotes she already uses.

Not to mention sockless
>>
>>729302017
The only thing video game related was my brother and his gf pre-ordering the physical version of Resident evil 9 for me through gamestop. I appreciate it a lot, even though I was going to pre-order and per-download the game on game pass/live. They know I've been so stoked for the game and I thought it was cool and thoughtful. That aside, some shirts, a hoodie, and a new office chair thats super comfy. They hinted at me wanting a "gaming" chair, but said that I was never too impressed with them.
>>
>>729302361
fuck you I have to buy myself socks, nice ones too, just ordered some that were 20e a pair

Apparently there's like high dollar gaming chairs now that have a bunch of research done in them and the materials to make them as comfortable as possible. It's "meh" to me.

All the norms i talk to talk about kids wanting the latest goyphone or a switch 2. Thankfully toys are still a thing for children younger than that

You are starting too late. A thoughtful gift is a gift you came up with months ago when you visited and saw them awkwardly hold a pot they're taking out of the oven because the mitts are worn out at the joint

I would know, I earned my Carrhart.

I said that to my parents one year, and handed me a box, ripped it open, and it was an Xbox Series X. I got a bit emotional because my brother, my dad, and my mom all threw in to get it for me. They didnt even have the money dude, and if all three didnt compile their cash I would have never got it. He's right, when I was younger I always got gift cards and/or cash. It was easier to do than figuring out a gift for someone you barely see through out the year. Some families are of course closer, but mine aren't. Christmas used to be fun and enjoyable, and when I got older it just felt like a chore. The most embarrassing gift I got was a beer holder, and a wooden six pack holder. Like "oh, you know nothing a out me other than that im a depressed alcoholic". Shit, even moped stuff would have been cool. But if felt like your own family didnt know you, and it kind of hurt.

I feel like some people have trouble understanding that in some families (like mine) you are not expected to buy gifts for everyone at all. In my family you might buy something small for whatever other adult you live with (wife, parent), maybe something for a secret santa.
Other than that its a holiday for kids, and the kids will only get presents from their parents and grandparents.

My family would buy you gifts when you didnt even ask. It was sweet, but you were kind of put in a position where you had to accept the gift or look like a dick.
>>
Luckily my parents care about the stuff I want and ask for a list of shit (which I usually take too fucking long making because I'm waiting to see ifthings are on deals from black friday on, in stock etc.. and otherwise make it easier for them). They in turn tell me what they want (my mother wanted a wallet this year, and sorting through all the chinkoid garbage to find something decent in terms of a lady's wallet that holds a checkbook in a special holder, plus all the other features her old one had, was difficult) though they sometimes can't think of anything. Dad couldn't think of anything he wanted, but he was talking about his PC monitor being shitty and taking a long time to boot up (it was an old Samsung VA that was probably on its last legs after many years) so I got him a new OLED 27"

>Clothing and socks
These were on my list, but that was partially because some of my clothing comes from a special store where its all (some handmade) by hippies out of organic fabric and with other features instead of fast fashion plastic crap dunked in teflon. Excellent quality, though I hav to look elsewhere to get leather or wool as the place is vegan, and some other materials I get from elsewhere (my jeans are from a small shop in Japan that makes them out of organic cotton and real indigo traditional dyeing) and take a long fucking time so show up so I just buy those myself; same with dress suits, shirts etc... and other stuff, but the hippie place just has a standard site where you can place orders so its easy for gifts, outside of the custom stuff.

>Tech and games
They used to buy me games during the oldfag cartridge and physical sale days, but these days its easier for me to buy it myself given I use ITAD and other deal sites. They may give cash, or I put stuff that they can find like PC parts (provided I have the place they can buy it, be it Amazon or elsewhere).

So yeah, good relationship with my family, but rarely is it just games anymore for gifts

Personally I think the way you talk about your parents they must be wonderful people, I truly believe it, because wonderful parents make wonderful children who know how to be grateful and not be a bunch of assholes, it has nothing to do with being rich btw, lots of rich people are disgusting monsters who have terrible children

shouldn't you be enjoying time with your granpa before he dies?
>>
>>729332838
No, this is how adults with decent relationships avoid drama and give good gifts that people actually want. The childish thing is to just be like
>Oh yeah I just want like a thing
instead of letting them know where to find said thing, the exact one you want etc. I can't tell you how many extended family members end up contacting my mom, to contact me about
>(cousin or some other relative) said he wants computer parts like a motherboard and CPU , is (horrible incompatible deal, or overpriced outdated shit in the warehouse, or some other sort of nonsense) good?
so I sort it out to find something that works in their price range. Note that these are often adults in their 20s+ making the requests, they aren't just kids who literally don't know how computer parts work conceptually (I don't hold it against the younger ones) but if you're going to ask for something specific, its good to detail it rather than end up with an awkward return situation or pretending its great. There are times when surprise gifts are fine, but if people are asking for what they really want with their close family, relatives, significant others etc... listing it out is the best way to avoid fuckups that ruin everyone's time.

Something my dad and I both agreed with is that the older you get the better a consumable gift is to give or get. Snacks/treats/gift cards are great for this, the giftee gets to use up the consumables and they don't need to take up room.

>mindlessly
The opposite is true at least as described above. Its not just buying random shit for people like some grandparent on QVC, its very specific. Person wants a thing that's either in a limited category, from a specific thing ,or a specific place. The thing they want arrives, they're happy. Does it cost money? Perhaps, but its a lot more thoughtful and a better value to put forth a little effort. For instance, there was no way I was going to ask for the RAM kit I was planning on picking up for a new home server rebuild, because its so insanely overpriced now it would be a massively greedy request. Instead, they know the stuff I want and where find it (either in general or specific) ,and vice versa.

If you want to not exchange gifts to save money that's okay too ,but I can't imagine the way that we end up doing things is any more expensive and certainly less mindless versus many others, while having a higher chance of good outcomes to boot.

What the fuck do you mean? Yeah, you buy what the person actually wants, they put forth the effort of mentioning the thing and where to find it, you deliver. Everyone's happy, there's no question shitty ambiguity on presents where people care about the specific thing you want, you and they know how much the thing is likely to be so they can make a decisions if its affordable, etc. You're being thoughtful both making the request and fulfilling theirs.

An 86 year old relative wanted some towels in blue or green, my mother found some really nice ones, old lady was very happy and sent pictures of her hanging them up in her bathroom where it matches perfectly. That's a fuckload more thoughtful than ignoring all that shit in the selfish attempt to
>rather than the thing they say they want, I'll somehow find them the amazing thing they didn't even know they wanted I'm so incredibly thoughtful and perceptive
which 9/10 times becomes a self-centered shitshow the other person needs to grin through. The older you get and when you have close enough relationships that you can be honest about what you actually want, the most thoughtful thing is to just respect the person enough to listen to them, rather than whatever fantasy bullshit about your perfect present. You really want to do that or think you have a great idea? You give them something surprising atop the thing they asked for as a bonus - we do that all the time.

Then hold off on some of the things you'd normally get for yourself and save them for the wishlist. You could say you're making wishlists for everybody in your family, then survey responses and put all the wishlists up so everyone can have an idea of what to get everyone else. Cross out/sharpie out anything that's purchased.

I don't have children, but I buy loads of Pokemon things for a friend's daughter and I recently bought two whole W40K armies (plus everything necessary to assemble and paint them) for my wife's niece.

In both cases you're inheriting hate towards other trans people who act like bullies and sex pests. Try your best to separate yourself from them and recognize when someone is talking past you because of their prior experiences with other people.

Every Christmas my aunt would get me a pair of socks. Every. Damn. Christmas.
>>
>>729335024
Based. I got awesome surprise gifts this Christmas so I'm not complaining but aside from rare exceptions, "surprise gifts" end up being a burden and people really seem to struggle to understand that. Maybe their closet is already stuffed to the point where it's hard to take things in and out and more clothes add to that mess. Maybe you shouldn't give someone a hat if you never see them wearing them. If they outright tell you that they're in the process of decluttering or that they're space is really small, they're not being humble, they're asking you to respect their boundaries. Making mindless consumerism into a holiday tradition is one of the greatest successfully pulled-off psyops in American history.

Presents are overrated. I don't buy stuff for myself because I already have too much shit I don't need, other people giving me more shit just makes it worse because most of the time it's something I'd never want in the first place.

You can't expect people who don't care to know what you want. For example I asked my mother to buy me the Fat Cat God Gundam for my birthday the other day. >>729302248
>>toiletries/soaps/deodorants
>Practically serves the same utilitarian effect as getting clothes
That depends, my sister has been into scented soaps lately especially if they smell like food so I bought her a few of those along with some Hello Kitty collab soaps and she loved it.

Granted she didn't know it was from me because she's a prick who would immediately throw it away if she knew but still. It all depends on what the person likes.

I got my mom tickets to broad way.
I got my dad an army's worth of Yeti coffee mugs. Pretty much every color they have.
I got one brother a Switch 2.
I got the other brother a Razer Wolverine v3 pro 8k pc + 32G of DDR5 Ram for his PC.
I got my brother wife a stand mixxer.

Christmas is always so expensive.

The way to go about this is to just collect something reasonably cheap and make it known that you collect it. You'll get those for gifts basically every year and you don't have to spend a dime contributing to it yourself if you don't want to. You get to use up some space on your wall and a free conversation topic for when you have visitors. It's very socially convenient.

I have too much stuff as it is. I LOVE getting money, food, snacks, tea, coffee, chips as presents, the more exotic the better. Food is something I can use.

I hate shopping. Socks and underwear? Sign me up Scotty, no problems with that.

My parents give me cash now; it's great. My wife, on the other hand, got me this shirt...

I'm not mad. Or even really disappointed since I had zero expectation of a gift. But this type of thing always makes me worry that I'm already a walking nerd stereotype so people that know me well think I like this sort of thing.

>gift male family members high quality wool socks for work
>they want more of those socks every year until they got enough pairs for a lifetime
They're comfy and really good for stinky sweaty feet. I'm getting a promotion soon, so next year I'm gifting them nice workshoes/boots.

>gift female family members supplements, beauty products, and household items to make housekeeping easier

>wife's gifts for me are usually clothes for herself that I get to fuck her in, or cheap t-shirts she gets for me at costco.

>Christian cousin's gifts to me are his thoughts and prayers, unironically
Honestly I love it. I don't care about getting gifts ever and just knowing people love and care about me is enough.

Getting really high quality expensive soap as a gift is something you should cherish but if they gave you a bottle of Dove gel you should never talk to them again
