Considering it's dropped on you literally in the very beginning(Monado), it's worth doing at least a little reading on some of that first. At the very least Google Monad beforehand. All the characters are actively playable, similar to Tales. Also similar to Tales, some are fun to play and some are not. Some like Melia are almost useless in the hands of the AI but can be devastating if used correctly by the player.
