Notice how Maelle's ending only gets truly disturbing once Verso enters the scene, showing it is HIS perception thereof. Prior to this, there is a Dutch angle as the revived inhabitants of Lumière are shown from the back, eerily hinting at their being pale copies of the deceased, BUT Gustave and the others are shown from the front, showing that Maelle as a paintress was able to capture their true essence.

This difference in direction is not there to shame the player for preferring Maelle's ending (though it has sadly been the actual effect), but because it would be too easy otherwise. Maelle's ending arguably fulfils the goal of Expedition 33, while Verso's, had it been directed in a similar fashion, would simply have been too depressing when the player chooses to commit omnicide.

Even then, Verso's ending is not as hopeful as one might believe at first glance. Besides overcoming grief, the game's themes include fighting for a better tomorrow and for future generations. Maelle's ending alludes to stagnation and very likely her own doom, while Verso's appears to portray a family reunited... if not for the fact that Alicia stands apart from her family for the entire cutscene, and is even shown alone at the end, in front of her brother's grave as her friends from the canvas vanish, never to be reunited.

A major factor in choosing the ending is how much weight one places in the painting's creatures and their personhood. The painting's main creators, Verso and Clea, are split on this. Clea calls them illusions, while it's clear from the young boy's dialogues throughout the story and side areas that Verso believed them to be real. The player himself can, however, reach the conclusion that they are real from seeing the White Necrons who went against their purpose given to them by Clea, among other examples.

Verso's choice is therefore far too egotistical. Lune was 100% right about him.
