The only mapper who had actual talent was Romero, but even he defecated onto the game in cases like Gotcha or Abandoned Mines. In fact, by far the best works by Romero were his modern, limit removing maps: E1M4b, E1M8b and Sigil, because those show massive character and unique puzzles everywhere without ever turning into tedium.

The rest? They were godawful. Tom Hall didn't have an eye for proper 3D, didn't use scaling, open areas or hight variations, with him in the lead, Doom would have been nothing more but an above average Wolf3D sequel.

Sandy is even worse, as he was completely clueless how to use texturing properly. His maps are eye-rapingly ugly, most of them play awful (at least Hall can create proper layouts) with confusing mazes and poorly written combats. He did use some set pieces right, like the cybie vs barons stuff in Map08, but that's nothing compared to his mistakes in relevant parts of the game.

American was bland. His maps blend into one big pile of nothing special. Boring textures, boring maps, stupid darkness, brown colour. What to like there?

The TNT/Master Level guys were hacks, the Casali Bros were good, but Plutonia dragged too long and its difficulty is often unfair.

NRFTL has great levels, I like both designers.

Romero is great! Been replaying Q1 recently, and I'm realizing most of my favorite maps are by him.

Hi Sandy. Hope you are doing well. However, this comment is inaccurate.

this is a correct take and why doom2 has such shitty maps.

The tnt stuff is wrong though, they were good mappers, icarus alien vanguard is still one of my very favorite megawads. It was great.

There's a couple of scenarios in there which are not so fun to play unless you're a Troonworlder and a couple which are difficult to survive unless you already know what is going to happen.
Generally though Plutonia is fair and not unfair bullshit. It's not even that hard compared to many fanmade wads and I mean good wads not slaughtershit.

troonworld glazes plutonia althougheverbeit

yeah but they also glaze the shit parts

I’ve played through final doom and doom 2 using brutal doom more times than just vanilla doom. I don’t care if that makes me a poser. Brutal doom is just too fucking fun.
>>
>>729329747
HOLY FUCKING BASED ME TOO

But seriously, Brutal Doom paired up with the maps and designed of Doom 1 is one of the best games of all time.

>>729331841
I also like Project Brutality. Specifically this older version of PB 3.0
https://allfearthesentinel.com/zandronum/wads.php?name=project_brutality_3.0_test_1-21-18.pk3&from=WadArchive
I just don’t like the newer version.

By the time he made those, the community had already made way better shit, so they are bad by comparison. The older levels had the excuse that they were the first ones and the editor they were using was very barebones.

I honestly only like user maps at this point. Except for Plutonia that's a masterpiece

Thats the normal opinion, custom levels shit all over the base games. It's no wonder too, considering the literal decades of experience, vastly superior tools and amount of mappers available

SlaughterKINO
>>
>>729343307
Are you referring to Romero's maps or community maps here?
In case it's Sigil: It's been a while since I played either but from what I recall I wouldn't consider Sigils slaughtershit. Sigil 2 isn't always exactly fun to play (remember: hardcore Troonworlders playtest the maps for Romero) but 1 was pretty good and even 2 has very reasonable monster counts.

Ive been playing 100 line slaughter maps and im starting to get it just a little bit. Im still really really shit at them but its fun to figure out encounters kind of like a puzzle
