I've been thinking about getting an LCD Steam Deck for a while now, and now that they are no longer in production, I have limited time to decide.
So do any of you have a Steam Deck?
Would you recommend it to someone with limited funds?
Thanks :)

>Would you recommend it to someone with limited funds?
Absolutely, but there's a catch. Are you really gonna use the handheld aspect of the system? If you have a shit PC there's no discussion, but if you have a relatively modern one, you might as well use it and skip on the Deck. I'd say the current best bet is the Steam Box, so if you can hold on until then it's probably the better choice. Otherwise the Deck ain't bad either.
>>
Do you have an existing steam library?

I'm not very tech savy, but my current PC has 16gb of ram, an AMD ryzen 3 3200g, and a GTX 1650.
>>
>>729347127
Yep, with lots of games that I still play, and some that I haven't yet played due to some PC limitations.

I just fear that the steam machine will be quite expensive haha. Like, I'm in Australia, so the cheapest steam deck is $650AUD, so I can only fear that the steam machine will be over $1k

Yeah you'd probably enjoy having a Steam Deck then, maybe consider if you'd just want to wait for the Steam Controller 2 to drop if you don't think you'll use handheld a lot.

Sounds good enough imo. The Steam Deck struggles with more recent titles. My suggestion would be the same, to save up for the Steam Box and get that one instead, but if you do enjoy the handheld experience and don't really play games from the past ~3 years, you will be fine with the Deck.

Hmmm true, I read that at worst it's going to be like 1.5-2x the steam deck. Don't get me wrong, that's quite a lot, but I think the Steam Machine is the safer bet in the long run, plus you will "save" by having your current steam library in a console format.

I wonder if steam deck is a good complement to a pc or if you should just go for the steam controller later
>>
Thank for all the info!
I'm still mulling it over haha
>>
>>729346990
You should wait on the next generation Steam Deck.
>>
>>729346990
Limited funds? Likely not depends on how cheap you can get it, it's not like buying a gaming PC is cheap but I would get that instead unless you mainly play older/indie/emulation tier games.
>>
It's a bit dated at this point but I don't trust any other handheld manufacturer, especially if you can't afford to replace it if shit goes wrong. Still rocking my LCD 3 years later.

Yes, you can put on cool startup videos

It looks like you can put dumb and uncool ones, too

Search https://www.protondb.com/ for games you like and click the steam deck tab to see how they play. Keep in mind that there's going to be some fiddling necessary since it's Linux and a lot of that will take some time to adjust to if you're coming from a windows background.
>>

Depends on what games you play.
Look their performance up on youtube and see if you're happy with it. Otherwise maybe you'll need a more powerful handheld.

My 8 year old nephew wanted a nintendo ds and a flash cart for Christmas. I hooked him up and little guy is literally losing his mind because it’s a brand new world to him. That’s true happiness.

Wouldn't recommend the Steam Deck. It's a faulty piece of shit. Already RMA'd it once due to the left trackpad and the mura effect on the OLED panel.
And now the Left Stick Click has stopped working. I've had a DS4 for about 10 years at this point and with zero drift issues or button failures.
At this point it feels like planned obsolescence.

if you have limited funds, it's like the only option for a handheld unless you go with A Switch/Switch 2 but then you're paying full price for Nintendo's shit instead of based Steam Sales. I got one over the summer, love it, emulate a lot of shit, played some games on it

Its stronger than the deck

Aside from the Mura on OLED, this seems like an nonissue if you like opening up your shit, which is what plenty of Deck users like to do.
And with how repair friendly it is aside from direct motherboard issues it does the job pretty well.
>I've had a DS4 for about 10 years at this point and with zero drift issues or button failures
I've gone through 3 with stick drift and and either circle or square buttons not registering and had to install hall effect and the clicky button mods to get rid of the issue.
Don't act like this just a Valve issue.

Well they are trying to go for the cheapest bidder for manufacturing. Thank you General Electric. /s

Personally I find it a much more comfortable way to play JRPGs on the sofa, but that's about all i use it for. Anything more action-oriented than that i tend to want just a bit more visibility and a more comfortable controller

>good complement to pc
That depends on your PC

If you have a toaster the Steam Deck is also a toaster

If you have a midrange/high end gaymen rig the Steam Deck is useless unless you have a library that you can play on it

Not every game runs neatly on the Steam Deck, the Lenovo one has Steam OS and is a much powerful device

The LCD version is a ticking time bomb if you give a shit about the L/R buttons. Basically the buttons are soldered to the daughter board at a 90 degree angle with nothing bracing it but a piece of plastic built into the shell, which would be fine, but most Decks have some variation in there build quality so there's a good chance the piece of plastic will have a near millimeter gap that over time causes the solder to wiggle back and forth on every press until it cracks, and once it cracks , it's near unrepairable unless your good at soldering, or find a a broken Deck to salvage the Daughter board from as Valve never gave the Daughter Boards to Ifixit for users to repair them with. Just get the OLED, it's far more user friendly when it comes to repair with Shoulder buttons that went from garbage to literally the most durable I have ever seen on a controller.

Idk if they really looking to commit on handhelds
