I played through the entirety of God eater and Code Vein and I can tell you 100% that I have no clue what the lore was for ANY of it. It just played out like a random anime melodrama. The games were fun though.

You don't have to know autistic details like what the different bias factors do or the historical timeline, but without the context you just watch an idol defeat some monsters with singing and random monsters are fought with no context even though they're actually pivotal character growth moments. Even the villain of GE2, who is normally the central figure of every single character arc in God Eater 2, becomes a boring one note villain if you don't learn their motivations or the fact that they are the only reason that humanity can even continue to exist in GE3.

I've only played a bit of some older MH but compared to that, GE gameplay felt a bit more mobile. Your weapon is both a melee weapon, a gun and a shield at the same time and it's the main thing you customize. The missions are very story heavy, even filler missions usually have some narrative purpose. And of course the main gimmick is that you can chow down on your enemies mid-battle or post-battle.
