It's good simply because it literally could never happen under Nu-Nintendo. The fact it's an actual remake and not a lazy re-release, with playable Wario in a mainline game and all the downright bizarre design choices like having you unlock Mario of all things.

It's pretty decent if you're playing it on a 3DS with that patched NDS firmware and XDELTA patch for the ROM itself to allow for real circle pad support.

Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time. When I was a kid, I saved up an entire summer to buy a DS that was bundled with it. Now, I played Mario 64 DS for hundreds of hours. But I never want to play it again.
This game made me think the DS was as powerful as the N64 for years.

I actually cried when I started playing this as a kid because of how shit it was.It was both similar to the original but then all the new shit in it was just terrible and pointless. Mean-spirited remake and or they just gave no fucks.

It's almost a different game and the benefits outweighed the drawbacks. 30 new stars and a bunch that were modified, graphically more impressive even at a lower resolution, multiplayer, minigames, the ability to play Super Mario 64 on the go and pause just by closing the console, a better camera, new stages, multiple playable characters, etc.The first NSMB was also a really good 2D Mario that is tarnished simply by a bunch of similar sequels with all the edges being sanded off coming out.
