I remember in 2004 my aunt telling me that if I maintained B's in highschool she'd continue to pay for my WoW sub, and WoW ran on my PC, and I remember that being relatively rare among my peers. So round about when the uh...PS2/GCN timeframe was ending, I didn't really look back. Back then JRPG and "console style RPG" were relatively synonymous, and what it suggested was heavily simplified gameplay with a heavy focus on cinematics and linear storytelling.
