Should you upscale your games or let them run at native resolution? I feel like native resolution might be a bit rough on some games compared to 720p.
>>
Just do whatever you want bro... who fucking cares. Fuck what anyone else says just play whatever you want however you want it to look. Honestly who fucking gives half a shit bro for real.
>>
Upscale
>>
>>729352618
I mean yeah, but it'd take me a bit of time to really get a proper feel, so I might as well get some opinions first.
>>
Software mode. PCSX2 upscaling looks horrible because of artifacting and misaligned effects.
>>
>>729352518
It depends on the game honestly, sometimes the og resolution looks more "right", and sometimes higher resolution is perfectly fine.
>>
>>729352941
What's the last game you finished on an emulator?
>>
>>729352518
you should play with everything native and then add a crt effect on top
>>
>>729352518
Thank God the devs behind this are actually competent. RPCS3 devs are shitting up their emulator, and Xenia is the spottiest emulator so far. Can play dogshit like Gears 1 or Halo but with fucked graphics, but nothing else.

I feel like upscales are good for Gamecube/Wii games with their more cartoony styles...

>>729353036
I might try that, even if it doesn't come close to actual CRT.

>>729352965
I was running on "automatic" when I started SOTC and had a few visual glitches, so I'll try software to check the difference.
>>
>>729353062
ps2 once again proving to be the superior console
>>
>>729352518
I always go with upscaling the resolution. Why the fuck not? Especially if you play them on your TV or whatever shitty handheld you bought.
>>
I'm pretty sure native res on PCSX2 isn't even proper native, no matter what settings you use some pixels are crushed or missing or something. It never "looks right" even with integer scaling.
>>
>>729353062
To be fair PCSX2 was complete dogshit for a long time.
>>
>>729352518
For me it depends on the art style. Some stuff looks too uncanny when upscaled and sharpened, while some stuff (like Nintendo art styles with lots of flat coloring, minimalist models, etc) look good upscaled.
>>729353036
Native res + CRT effects really let your brain do a lot of the work if you have that ability (most don't anymore).
>>
>>729353108
There's a bit of "blur"/"abstraction" added by lower resolutions and upscaling too much can make you lose that. For instance you can have a blocky structure that looks jarring once upscaled since you see everything about it clearly
>>
>>729353108
>Why the fuck not?
A number of games I've tried upscaling as broken UI or text, broken bloom effects, broken shadows or shaders, etc. There's a good chunk of the PS2 library that still have hiccups and issues if you go above native or even try to not use Software.
>>
>>729352518
Always be foreverially upscaling fully upscaled platforming mascot polygonal and loving it

I just want to play WET on 60 FPS. Seeing my favorite game turning to shit before my eyes is a bummer, but if I can't play it, might as well learn Xenon Recomp. If nobody's willing to do the work to port it to PC, I might as well do it myself.

I love it too much to let it die. But hopefully it gets better. Blog over, lel.
>>
>>729353108
Most of the time I do, but when a game is trying to be atmospheric, the fog that's masking some shit that's like 10 feet in front of you that hasn't yet fully loaded in is entirely necessary and upscaling tends to butcher that
>>
>>729353195
These games were made for CRTs anyway so it will always look weird whether you scale up the resolution or not.

True. Infamous 2 and PROTOTYPE don't even boot up for me anymore, had to get my fix by buying PROTOTYPE off Steam. But hey, nice graphics and 60 FPS, so it's not all bad. But that's besides the point, hopefully they get their shit together.
>>
>>729353434
dont worry, it will get better in 10 years

Kinda off-topic question I apologize but this doesn't deserve its own thread..
Anyone know if Pikmin 3 Deluxe and/or Pikmin 4 can be played co-op over netplay on Eden or other switch emulators? Maybe with Parsec and a good connection?

case-by-case basis.
Some games like Burnout 3 feel like legitimate improvements, while others like many SCE or Namco games have bad glitches.
>>
Which of these do you guys actually use?
>>729352518
I'll think something looks nice upscaled and then it always turns out it was fuckiing something up. My go to example is always this magic wavy fog effect in a DDS dungeon that was just barely visible on anything but software mode.
>>
>>729352518
>Should
There's that work again....

You should do whatever the fuck you want. But you should also be aware that emulating in anything other than native res is going to cause problems.
>>
Depends on the game, I'm currently playing Onimusha 3, and at higher resolutions when I look at Jean Reno I see Jean Reno, on software mode I see the idea of Jean Reno. So 6x res it is.
>>
>>729352518
You shouldn't upscale in any case, it looks horrendous. If you're on a modern screen (LCD / OLED) then you should run the game at increased resolution to match. There are no good alternatives, if you run it at game native res then it either needs to be upscaled to fill the screen (looks horrible) or you need to play in a very tiny window that matches the tiny resolution. That also sucks for obvious reasons.

The most authentic way to do it is obviously going to be native res on a CRT TV, but most people don't have a setup like that so you're going to get the best experience by increasing rendering resolution so it looks alright on your modern screen instead.
>>
>>729352518
You should play on original hardware.
>>
>>729354042
I just tried but they all kind of mess up the lighting?
>>
>>729354042
i hate that they make the screen darker but i thought Lottes CRT looked decent enough
>>
The Sly games look really nice the higher you go
>>
>>729352518
Try it and find out
>>
How come when you upscale PS2 games the UI usually looks really bad and/or is glitchy with artifacts but when you upscale PS1 games the UI looks fine 99% of the time?
>>
emulation is evil and wrong
>>
>>729354629
How else do you preserve old hardware? Because entropy dictates you can't, and factories have been closed for decades. Emulation is the only thing that can make these things last
>>
>>729352518
You have to for ps2 games, many were very low res or interlaced that looks terrible for that gen.
Upscale to at least your screen's resolution if not higher so you can downscale since you often have to do so to keep the games from looking blurry even at higher res.
>>
2x IR + Bob deinterlacing is the closest to how the games actually looked on a CRT. Doubling the resolution cancels out the bobbing effect and the end result is more or less a 480p image.
>>
Native + crt filter

Short answer: it depends

Long and autistic answer:
https://youtu.be/jjjlteKX_Uc?si=a2tSujzmBr0whPRK
>>
>>729352518
depends on the game
there's no good reason not to upscale the majority of 6th gen games (exceptions are like silent hill 2), but 5th gen and below is basically mandatory
>>
It's a shame Xemu is apparently terrible. I just want to play the best version of Splinter Cell Double Agent.

any tips and tricks for the half press, pressure sensitive buttons?
>>
>>729352518
I generally upscale 3D games, not counting most PS1 games.

I think since I grew up mostly playing PC games I never really got used to the overly blurry aesthetics of most console games. I always hated it and the moment I could get away from it by playing a PC port I would.
>>
>>729354993
Try unplugging your controller when booting a game, then plug it back in once the game has launched. Yes, RPCS3 is that shitty.
>>
>>729352518

Native with a scanline shader or native emulated to a crt. If do ever happen to upscale, I only do it a little bit to help reduce jaggies and improve clarity but anything higher just ends up looking weird and I don't like it.
>>
>>729358438
Literally just get the PC version with digital control inputs. WTF are you doing?
>>
>>729352518
upscale

I am PC brained. When I play old games I want it to be like I had the top of the line $5000 system in 2004 or whatever playing a PC port. When I play DOS games I am using Roland MIDI emulation and not listening to sound blaster squeaks, even though probably .05% of players played that way at the time. I am playing Gran Turismo 4 as though it had a PC port and I had the top tier videocard from a few years in the future.

/thread

personally I have no problem with upscaling games I emulate, and my first gaming console was an atari-2600 before moving to DOS

I don't understand where this "keep it looking shitty" mentality comes from, especially with early 3D games where there was constant z-fighting and warped textures

You should probably learn what "upscale" means before you ask these questions.
>>
>>729355514
Can you do that easily on PCSX2? I know duckstation has it.
>>
>>729358120
I haven't tried this specific game, but in my experience xemu has been incredible. Used it for Genma Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden Black only, but it was a great experience.
>>
>>729358438
Use a Dual Shock 3 if you want to do the half press yourself, or you can map a button as the pressure modifier and set up how much that modifies, you can map that to a button on the controller or the mouse or the keyboard, whatever is most convenient for that game. So say you map it to L2, pressing L2 + square is the same as a 50% press of square as long as you have it set for 50%. You can also alter that individually per button.
Much easier to just use a DS3 if you have one laying around, but buying a legit one nowadays may not be as easy.
