Cloud was a marketing gimmick. The reason Nintendo went all out with the third parties in Smash 4's DLC and Ultimate is the same reason that a lot of dying gacha games partner with other IPs. They are trying to get people in for the more popular series and hope they stay. It kind of work for Ultimate but that has more to do with how well the Switch did. Odyssey sold like double Galaxy's sales. Not surprising Ultimate is as successful as it is.

That said, much like how Mario Kart ditched the Nintendo characters, Smash will ditch third party characters. Nintendo is focused on pushing their IPs and they see how excited people get for new characters. They're hoping to push that same energy to their own characters especially Pauline, Oatchi and Sylux with how much they push them. King K Rool is a real world example of this. Also, hate to tell you this anon, but we're never escaping the Fire Emblem characters. They are the most popular characters in Japan.

The representation from Final Fantasy in all aspects is hilariously dogshit compared to the representation for Dragon Quest. Cloud/Sephiroth feels like a slap in the face and flies against standard Smash character practice. Similar feelings about Joker instead of a more general SMT rep. Jack Frost/Pyro Jack duo would have been amazing. In general Ultimate leans way too hard on zoomer brand recognition instead of "worthiness" or "importance to Nintendo history".

Everything relating to Smash in regards to non-third parties are all based on his personal interpretation of a series or character. Even some 3rd parties (Mega Man). I don't get how Wario leans on Japanese adverts but then comes Sakurai trying to boast about being accurate to a character's game, that same time where he removed Wario's shoulder bash which was pathetic in Brawl to begin with and claimed the punch was stronger.

Other examples include his indifference towards Zelda, his bias towards Fire Emblem, his absolute love for Castlevania, Persona 5 and KoF while claiming he doesn't approach Smash as a fan and his overall need to give fans 'something' regardless of how bad it can backfire (Rex/Spring Man) and his inability to walk back on it (Pythra/Minmin). I also feel that Ridley was designed the way he was out of spite, as well as other characters. He needs to realize the fans are who matters, not him. They pay money for his games and they allow him to live a good life. If he was so hellbent on Ridley not being playable, he should have stood on it.

Smash has always been Sakurai's interpretation of the character, for better or for worse. It gives the game a unique flavor but it can be a bit of a hit or miss and I'd say he's not as good at is as much as he claims to be. Compare him to say Cygame with Umamusume. They do a much better job of implementing the characters into a game and they're adapting race horses as anthropomorphize girls. There is a lot more thought on how the girls are portrayed than Sakurai does with Smash. I'd say this is the flaw of having one guy be the sole arbiter of how characters are portrayed (even if the creators give him some feedback). It becomes HIS interpretation rather than portraying characters closer to how most people see that character.

On Ridley, he's always changed his stance on who can and can't be in. Miis were initially rejected for Brawl but were fine for Smash 4. Its not bad to be flexible and some of Sakurai's issue is that he isn't at times. He's still a good director, but I think fans sometimes buy into his over inflated ego.

If SEGA's recent promotion of Shadow (the third Sonic movie and Shadow Generations) had started sooner, they'd theoretically have been able to push for Shadow in Smash. And I think Waluigi would have only been included if it was at the expense of Piranha Plant, since they're basically both joke characters whose purpose is to show how extensive Ultimate's roster is.

I don't think that has anything to do with Smash, Bomberman was just never that popular. It was a very simple arcade puzzle game that has been trying and failing to reinvent itself for decades. It's almost embarrassing how many Bomberman games there are, and how many of them are cheap garbage. Ironically, the Bomberman games on Nintendo platforms were some of the only ones to have any success with reinventing Bomberman (64, Second Attack, Generations, Jetters), but if you ever look at a timeline of Bomberman releases they're adrift in a sea of forgotten slop.

Act Zero was the moment when Bomberman lost all credibility as an IP, and it went into hibernation years and years before Smash Ultimate even began being talked about. Honestly, it's a pretty big win for Bomberman to even be included.

Hudson Soft USA went defunct in 1995, hence why it never had a consistent publisher here. It went from Atlus, Nintendo, Vatical, Majesco, Ubisoft, Activision and more. Second Attack flopped hard since Nintendo did not publish it like they did with 64 and Hero. Not many copies were made.

This killed the identity of Bomberman in America, no consistent publisher behind it. Also explains why Bagura had a million different names that kept changing every game. Ganondorf remains a Falcon clone. Pac-Man's smash attacks are him using enemy sprites.
