Enough math nerds exist that it could be quickly discerned if it's additive or multiplicative, so I doubt that that's possible on that basis alone.
It'd still be a kick in the nuts depending on how long out you have to wait to actually find out if gains are additive/multiplicative though.

It's happened with wowhead and icyveins. A bunch of guides supporting THE cookie cutter builds are factually incorrect, and the part that sucks is the player would need to mess around with the server to figure it out.
For example, in WotLK, people keep saying arcane mages can get over 100% combat casting regen with a glyph, and the only reason I know you can't go over 100% is because I hosted my own server and figured it out.

Kek, I just bought Wolcen and the stat lines are going to give me conniptions. Worst part is it's a eurojank game with half-assed ESL translation, so it's hard to tell whether things actually do something or are just flavor text. My guess is the first is additive and the rest are multiplicative, but who knows.

I think conditional buffs are fine if it the activation triggers aren’t a pain, encourages a solid playstyle, and gives meaningful advantages. Single-digit percentage increases with minimal uptime for example are trash.

Not having access to knowledge of mechanics and functions in a game can be pretty shitty in many cases though I don't know a lot of games that are huge offenders here. There are however two I can think of.
Xcom EW: Long war and Battle brothers.

Remunds me of how Seymor in FFX in the Mt. Gagazet fight actually isn't immune to poison and is such an overall roadblock that poison is actually very useful and widely recommended for him. Also fell seal Arbiter's mark worked heavily with status effects as I recall which was nice.

Uh, anon, there's no assurance that mechanical implementation on your locally hosted server is the same as some other server (such as retail Wrath servers in 2008-2010, or Blizzard's Classic servers, or even any other private server that either is based on a different or different version of open source server software, or that has their custom fixes that they haven't contributed back to the open source server).

That being said, WoW is actually a pretty great example since it must have been one of the most thoroughly theorycrafted games of its era (or any era), not obviously terribly complex, and yet in vanilla/TBC, occassionally even Wrath (at which point you started having theorycrafting software like SimCraft) and possibly later, with theorycrafting knowledge having advanced even further since, we do know for a fact that even robustly theorycrafted guides like Elitistjerks, never mind "the common wisdom", have been confidently wrong.
