why did nuclear throne never became a huge hit and indie darling?
SJW devs
>3 milli revenuegoddamn
>>729369150It did
>>729369150Not everything is made to cater to normies, and not every dev is trying to chase popularity
>>729369150cause Rami is a cunttotally helped killed the vibe before it had a chance
>>729369150Devs shot themselves in the foot by making it impossible to loop more than once.
>>729369150I immediately bounced off it because of the (deliberate?) dropped frames. Luftrausers suffered from it too.
There are way too many roguelites, man. Honestly these days, if a game has roguelite tag I will skip it immediately. I think I have come to associate it with bad, lazy level design (or lack thereof thanks to procedural generation), grind and tedium. I just want to play a game where I can just explore and not have to do 1000 runs getting +0.00001% damage bonuses each time
Because it's boring as fuck
>>729369150It's too tryhard. Most successful roguelites have runs where you're blessed by RNG and roll on the game once in a while, this doesn't happen in this game.
>>72936915030 FPS + the fans are cunts
>>729369150I knew a guy who played this obsessively and in the end he cut his dick off
>>729369150Don't know, it's fun, has a great OST, and charming character designs. Feels like it has the hallmarks of all the successful indie games of the mid-2010s.Maybe it was just too hard, I've played a shitload and I still often get filtered by Lil' Hunter, Throne, or even the Ocean level sometimes.
>>729371746It took a decade, but the December patch finally gave it 60 fps. (yes I know there was a beta build with the option, but nobody was using that)Don't know about the fans though, haven't interacted with the community at all
>>729369150Nuclear throne is an actual video game. Most roguelites are designed to just be autopilot through. It's quite popular for an actual video game.
>>729369150Games like NT and Noita where you're never going to feel remotely safe, only like you can kill anything that threatens you quickly once you see it, just don't get popular.
>>729369150It's always been a "game Dev's favourite game"Isometric shooting roguelikes really would not have taken off without this gamebut I hope that the future is bright for this gameA sequel would do a world of good, what with how much of the game's formula is mailable. Most roguelikes of today have a neat gameplay idea that could have been a 4 hour game, stretched into a gameplay loop that makes it more "repayable"Nuclear Throne is one of the rare games that actually benifits the most out of being one.An anon can dream...
Kinda came before all that shit got big and dungeon/isaac/hollowknight over shadowed it soon after.
>>729371803Is he single?
>>729376036>Most roguelikes of today have a neat gameplay idea that could have been a 4 hour game, stretched into a gameplay loop that makes it more "repayable"You nailed it on the head. When I play roguelites, I get the impression it is that way to pad the playtime. Sure I can get the character stronger after 500 hours of playing, but will those 500 hours be entertaining? Not that much, it's definitely a quantity over quality deal, and it resembles old games where you had to start all over if you died at the end of the level, to compensate for how the game had a low amount of levels, so devs made it bullshit hard to give a false impression the game was long and worth the purchase.
>>729369150Because Enter The Gungeon released a few months later, had a much stronger marketing force, and was much more attractive to normalfags.
>>729374750Spelunky too. Noita and Spelunky are rather popular though.
>>729376036>a "game Dev's favourite game"this might have been true in 2015 but I don't think it's true any more, it doesn't have enough """accessibility""" (read: an easy mode) or a system of permanent unlocks that make the game easier over time. post-TIGSource game devs don't like arcade game design philosophy
>>729369150The games aesthetic is normie repellent and thank god for that
>>729376286There are still devs that pine for uncompromising arcade action. My friend released one last year and it's very much inspired directly by NT's design philosophy without copying. Has a lot of unsubtle references in achievement names and loading screen tips. There will always be people that want to emulate what they found fun. If anything we should be concerned for the next generational wave since unforgiving difficulty seems to be relegated to streamerbait ragegames like jump king and getting over it.
it kinda was, back in 2015
>>729376286>or a system of permanent unlocks that make the game easier over timeThis might sound retarded but I feel like the opposite is annoying too. The sense that I'm not playing the "real game" until I've looped once/unlocked all the mechanics/am playing on ascension X/etc etc bothers me just as much if not more. A level that I've never been to because I can't beat the previous one is fine, a version of level 1 I've never been to because I haven't beaten the entire game yet makes me feel like I'm breaking out in hives.
>>729369150Because it's too hard, most people get filtered by Lil Hunter and there's less than 1000 things to unlock.
