Why did this style die out? It was peacefully coexisting with full-3D games all the way up to the PS3 era, so it’s not like the rise of polygonal graphics edged it out. Not only are the pre-rendered backgrounds great for creating an unparalleled, rich and embellished atmosphere, but the developers and narrators also get to TELL a really interesting story with how the shots are staged, camera placement, etc.

Games like Gamecube’s REmake and RE0 showed just how cool games with high quality pre-rendered backgrounds can look. The more processing power/storage becomes available with time, the more layers and effects you can add, creating a truly unique visual presentation running with only a fraction of the computing power required of modern AAA releases. Imagine 4k pre-rendered backgrounds with ray tracing and complex parallax scrolling and whatnot; we could have had so many amazing looking games.

It just looks dated unless you want to go for a throw back style but then you cant charge people 60 bucks for that, so only indies do it.

Personally, i thought it always looked like shit and i stayed away from any game that did it.

It took good artists and lots of money to make those backgrounds in the 90s, and those publishers will only devote those resources to what the current market considers AAA

I know of at least 5 people who never beat FF7 or other similar games with pre rendered background simply because they couldn’t figure out where to go. The average gamer is stupid and that’s why every game that comes out now holds your hand every step of the way. Granted, on those older TV’s it was pretty hard to see some of those caves but still.

It looked good and worked for that game because it was remaking a tank-control game. People usually don't like that control scheme nowadays and there's no doubt in my mind a free camera with 3D world works better, again for exploration purposes. I suppose for Final Fantasy where exploration in those non-overworld areas is basically nonexistent and you just walk from point A to B with constant random encounters, it doesn't matter as much

Anything that takes hard work and effort is absent from everything other than passion projects, because those things can't be put into a spreadsheet to make line go up

The same reason almost every other genre died out. Asset stores and Unity/Unreal.

Now you get Ass Creed clones, horror walking sims, cartoony shooters, or survival/crafting. That's it. Anything else would need new code or assets.

Replaying older FFs now is just a joy, the scenery is spot on, I love it. I'm so grateful for 9.
