He’ll probably forever be “the face” but Mario is less relevant than ever and there is absolutely ZERO hype or demand for the next 3D Mario and def not a 2D Mario at this point it’s been done to death and no one really cares. We’re at kind of a weird point where people have Zelda fatigue also and those are the flagships. DK is meh and Metroid has never been a sales machine. They struck fire with splatoon but 3 was kind of shit and only dedicated splat autists defend it and we’ve seen absolutely no new smash anything. They’re in a pretty bad funk slump sales and culturally and I’m not really sure how they’ll dig themselves out. It’s temporary as all things are, thoughever.

The entire Mario franchise is the ultimate entry-level step to gaming, and it covers such a vast array of genres that it could appeal to basically anyone that has never played any games. At least, that's how it's always been. I don't know how are kids nowadays getting introduced to gaming, it's been a while since a mainline Mario game was on the mainstream. Stuff like the older Mario RPGs or even Luigi’s Mansion gave them personality beyond the “woohoo!” mascot nonsense. Same with Mickey in stuff like The Brave Little Tailor or Epic Mickey when they actually let him DO stuff. But nah, gotta reduce them to safe symbols on the corporate altar now.
